Longhorns men’s basketball ranked in AP Top 25 poll

Heading into the 2024-2025 campaign, Texas is ranked as the 19th-best team in the country

With the college basketball season just around the corner, the Associated Press released its top 25 poll, and the Longhorns made the cut. Heading into the 2024-2025 campaign, Texas is ranked as the 19th-best team in the country. After finishing last season with a 21-13 record, they will look to build on their success in a competitive conference.

In the latest poll, eight SEC teams are in the top 25. That list includes Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, and Ole Miss. If the Longhorns can perform well in SEC play, a conference title could come to Austin.

While an SEC title will be one of the Longhorns’ goals, their main focus will be making a deep run in March Madness. They have made the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament the last three seasons. Their national championship run ended last season with a loss to Tennessee in the Round of 32.

This season, the Longhorns will be led by a group of talented veterans, which includes Kadin Shedrick, Chendall Weaver, and Devon Pryor. They will get help from transfer portal additions Jordan Pope, Tramon Mark, and Jayson Kent.

With a roster that is loaded with talent, the Longhorns are ready to prove their doubters wrong and move up in the national rankings.

Virginia transfer F Kadin Shedrick commits to Texas

Kadin Shedrick becomes Texas head coach Rodney Terry’s first transfer portal commitment.

Virginia forward Kadin Shedrick announced his commitment to Texas on Sunday night.

Shedrick becomes the first addition to Rodney Terry’s 2023-24 roster from the transfer portal. His announcement snaps a long offseason drought to bring in a player from elsewhere.

The Virginia player averaged 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds for his team last season. Not surprisingly, the player who hails from Virginia head coach Tony Bennett’s system is known as an excellent defensive player. Albeit, he does bring an element Texas desperately needs in next year’s squad: Height.

At 6-foot-11, Shedrick would have been the tallest player on last year’s squad. He joins 6-foot-9 forward Dylan Disu on the front line for Texas. The Longhorns will hope to get rim protection from the veteran transfer, or at least good enough defense that prevents opponents from getting to the basket.

As for next season’s roster, the Longhorns are in need of two more impact scoring guards and the return of guard Tyrese Hunter and forward Dillon Mitchell. Keep an eye on Oral Roberts guard Max Abmas who is considering the Longhorns as his recruitment comes to a close.

Texas Basketball: Longhorns in the mix for two top transfer targets

Texas is among the top schools for two transfer portal targets.

Texas basketball is among the top schools for two transfer portal targets.

Virginia center Kadin Shedrick has Texas in his top five schools, along with Duke, Kansas State, Missouri and Xavier. Rice point guard Quincy Olivari also named Texas as a finalist, with Auburn, Xavier and Miami in the running.

Shedrick played in 30 games for Virginia this past season, averaging 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-11 forward is fresh off a trip to Duke and is expected to visit Texas on April 18.

Olivari is an experienced guard with four seasons of college basketball under his belt. The Rice transfer is one of the top scoring threats in the portal, averaging 18.9 points per game.

Guard is a significant position of need entering the offseason. Texas lost Marcus Carr and Sir’Jabari Rice to graduation and awaits the status of Tyrese Hunter testing draft waters. Olivari fits the bill of what the Longhorns are looking for in its backcourt.

Rodney Terry is looking to capitalize off the momentum from this season and rebuild a roster ready to compete for a national title. Shedrick and Olivari are two players Terry believes can help the Longhorns in a significant way.

LSU has already reached out to a Virginia transfer who recently entered the portal

The Tigers seem to be casting a wide net in the transfer portal.

The Tigers men’s basketball team will once again enter the offseason in need of major help in the transfer portal.

The situation isn’t quite as dire as it was last spring as coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] had to rebuild essentially the entire roster, but after a losing first season in Baton Rouge that featured an abysmal 2-16 record in conference play, it’s clear changes need to be made and quickly.

LSU has already lost four players to the portal, but the staff has been active with several transfer prospects. One that they’ve reportedly reached out to is Virginia transfer [autotag]Kadin Shedrick[/autotag], who entered the portal Monday.

By Tuesday, he had heard from over 20 schools, he told On3’s Joe Tipton, including LSU.

It’s unclear if LSU (or any of these programs, for that matter) have extended offers to Shedrick. The 6-foot-11 player from Holly Springs, North Carolina — who is entering his fifth season — has started 34 of 65 games in the last two seasons for the Cavaliers.

After averaging 6.9 points and 5.1 rebounds in 2021-22, he saw his production dip a bit this season as he averaged 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds.

Still, he would give LSU some experience and size in the paint, which would help with the loss of forward [autotag]KJ Williams[/autotag].

Virginia big man enters transfer portal

Kadin Shedrick, a 6-foot-11 forward and former four-star recruit entered the transfer portal Monday after three seasons at Virginia.

Kadin Shedrick, a 6-foot-11 forward and former four-star recruit announced that he’s entering the transfer portal Monday after three seasons at Virginia. As a high schooler in North Carolina, the big man received an offer from Wisconsin in July of 2018 before ultimately selecting the Cavaliers.

Shedrick saw his role diminished slightly in 2022-2023, starting 15 games out of the team’s 30 total, playing 17.5 minutes per contest while averaging 6.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.

With Wisconsin particularly thin behind Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl at the forward position, Shedrick would provide the team with another experienced option down low, especially if Wahl decides to move on following the conclusion of the 2022-2023 campaign.

Greg Gard and his staff will seemingly do their due diligence when it comes to options in the transfer portal this offseason and Shedrick would be a great get for the Badgers next season.

One Notre Player makes this list.

With the Thanksgiving tournaments in the rear-view mirror, it’s time for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and the beginning of ACC play. Of course, we only will be getting a small taste of conference action. That will begin in earnest right before New Year’s Eve. In the meantime, here’s who’s been handling nonconference opponents the best so far:
