5 Michigan football players whose stock is rising after the spring game

Wouldn’t be surprised if by the season’s end, these guys are mainstays. #GoBlue

The dust has settled now that the Michigan football annual spring game is a week behind us. There’s nothing on-field until the team officially readies itself for the 2023 season in fall camp in August.

But there are some players who could find themselves seeing more action on the field sooner than later.

There were a handful of players who made some strong impressions in the spring game who will either play big roles and be big factors or at least could find themselves contributing in ways they hadn’t before.

Here are five Wolverines we feel have a shot to make an impact in 2023 based off what we saw in the spring game.

Michigan Football: Counting down the Wolverines’ top 5 recruits of 2023

Here are their five highest-ranked prospects.

One of the rising powers in college football the last two seasons is Michigan, where the Wolverines have gone 25-3 and won two Big Ten championships. Of course, a lot goes into making a winning program, but a recruiting advantage is usually at the heart of it.

And Michigan has been a significant factor in the race for top-tier athletes in the upcoming classes as well, especially from the Class of 2023.

Take a look at the Wolverines’ five highest-ranked prospects.

Steve Clinkscale raves about the two early enrollee cornerbacks in CFP practice

This is super great to hear! #GoBlue

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. — You would think with Michigan football preparing to play in the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl that there would be little time to get the early enrollees up to speed. But that’s not how the Wolverines are approaching their preparation.

The maize and blue brought seven of their new signees to Arizona for the game, and they’re not just taking everything in. They’re participating, dressed and practicing as if they’re playing, despite having never played in a college game. And they’re getting valuable reps, too. On Tuesday, in the portion of practice the media was able to view, cornerback Cameron Calhoun made a play on a scout-team receiver, looking not much different than five-star freshman Will Johnson. Jyaire Hill, the big get during the early signing period for the Wolverines, was also involved in practice.

While you might think working to get new players up to speed in the middle of a playoff run would be an extra burden on coaches, those two players in particular haven’t inconvenienced co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale — even the slightest.

“I haven’t had to balance it because they have adjusted so fast,” Clinkscale said. “The rest of the team, their teammates, their peers, the rest of the DBs, have really accepted them very fast because they see their talent. They see their ability. I’m very open and honest with our group, everybody knows where they stand. So the players understand we got to continue to build on this, continue to bring in top-tier talent. And when you see these two guys out there doing what they do just naturally without much coaching and adjusting right now, just naturally, it kind of opens everybody’s eyes that we were heading in the right direction.

“And the players have really adjusted well with them and brought them out like little brothers, I believe DJ, Mikey are both taking them both under their wing to try to just help them navigate the time, the schedule, where to be, how to get there on time, and then how to practice. And I’ll be honest with you, it hasn’t been — we haven’t had taken one step back with these two guys. Like they practice so hard. And they do a great job. I’m excited for them.”

Now that Hill and Calhoun are no longer high school prospects and are working out with their newfound peers, what have they looked like in practice?

Clinkscale notes that, of course, they’re still a work in progress. The good thing is established players, particularly Mike Sainristil and DJ Turner, have been mentors to the duo.

[lawrence-related id=67179,67176,67109]

“They’re long, athletic, they’re quick, and they pick up very fast,” Clinkscale said. “When we do a drill, they either do it naturally, or if they didn’t do it right the first time, they did the second time — they do it perfect. They’ve done a great job with picking up the scheme. We call in a couple of defenses for them, they go out there and they look at them and tell them, ‘Hey, your man or you’re a third player, you’re a quarter player, you’re playing this,’ and then they’re able to adjust with just a few days of knowledge.

“So they do a good job of paying attention more than any freshman I’ve ever been around. They’re not there talking about how good they are, and how they’re gonna come and beat everybody out. They’re watching great players in front of them and they want to learn from them. So I told them when I recruited them, there’s not many people that come in to play as true freshmen. Especially, start a game as a freshman your first game. Will Johnson didn’t even start. He just kept building and building and building as the year went on. And so you guys come and learn. The best coach for you is the players in front of you. Learn from them, see how they do, see what they do. And then you will be able to take that and take it to another level with your talent and they’re taking that advice to the max.”

Though they are practicing, it is highly unlikely either will appear in the College Football Playoff given their inexperience as well as participating would officially wipe out one year on the clock for their college career.

WATCH: Jyaire Hill’s epic troll of Purdue and Illinois before picking Michigan football

Wow, you’re gonna want to see this! #GoBlue

Michigan football’s newest pledge appears to be something of a prankster.

2023 Kankakee (Illinois) four-star cornerback Jyaire Hill was long rumored to be deciding between Michigan and Illinois, but questions arose as the early signing period approached.

First, Ryan Walters, the former defensive coordinator for the Illini, took over the Purdue program after Jeff Brohm left for Louisville. Then, Hill released a top five just two days before his commitment date that didn’t include the Wolverines.

Despite that, predictions kept rolling in for the maize and blue. Many in the recruiting world suspected his list was a ruse. They turned out to be right. Hill committed to Michigan on Wednesday.

What fans who weren’t in attendance (who either watched live on ESPN or on one of the various live streams) didn’t see was just how deep Hill’s troll went. First, he only had two teams pictured on the table, Illinois and Purdue. Secondly, he showed a video before he put on the hat with the Block M. It turns out, Hill really took his head-fake the full distance.

After his commitment, he reposted the video on his Instagram, showing the world just how deep his fake went.

(The relevant part of the video starts at the 2:39 mark in the video.)

So, Hill really made it look like he was choosing between Illinois and Purdue, all the way until he put on the Michigan hat.

Though the buzz strongly favored the maize and blue, fans of the Illini and Boilermakers have to be reeling that much more considering how Hill used their programs at patsies before he chose to wear a winged helmet at the next level.

Still, it’s an epic, epic troll if we’ve ever seen one.

Michigan football reels in prized commit after early-week head-fake

He tried to fool everybody! #GoBlue

So, you thought that the ship had sailed on 2023 Kankakee (Ill.) four-star cornerback Jyaire Hill? Well, not so fast.

The elite defensive back released a top five on Monday which didn’t include Michigan football, which was surprising given that it appeared that he was down to the Wolverines and in-state Illinois. However, come early signing day, it turned out to be something of a ruse.

Ranked No. 195 in the country per the 247Sports Composite, Hill has offers from the likes of Illinois, Washington, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue, TCU, Tennessee, UCLA, and Wisconsin. Yet, he pledged his commitment to Michigan football on Wednesday, thus completing the head-fake.

He made his announcement live on ESPN2.

Hill is Michigan’s 23rd commitment in the 2023 class and the third cornerback with Cameron Calhoun and D’Juan Waller in the fold.

On3 has Hill as the No. 112 player in the country. Here is their scouting report:

Productive, do-it-all playmaker who likely projects as a cornerback long-term. A taller, thin defensive back measuring in at over 6-foot-1 and around 170 pounds prior to his senior season. A dominant multi-phase high school player. Lines up multiple spots on offense, including quarterback and running back. Also plays defensive back, often lining up safety. Has excellent ball production, picking off 7 passes as a junior. Shows plus instincts at defensive back, quickly triggering to break on routes. Also shows reactive quickness in man coverage in the camp setting. Dangerous with the ball in his hands as a kick and punt returner. Has a long, easy stride. Has posted strong speed marks, running an electronically-timed 4.59 second 40-yard dash and a 10.87 second 100 meter mark as a junior. Will need to continue getting stronger, but has considerable upside given his stature, ball skills and athleticism.

Given his speed, he very well could see early time as a freshman, a la Will Johnson, despite the large group of underclassman defensive backs.

Steve Clinkscale was Hill’s primary recruiter.
