The Houston Astros Justin Verlander took to social media to clear up his injury situation
There was an intriguing few minutes for Houston Astros fans Sunday. First, there was a report ace right-hander Justin Verlander would be down for a few weeks with a forearm strain. Then came another factoid said the reigning Cy Young winner had an elbow injury and would miss the rest of the 60-game season.
What’s a pitcher to do? Well, if you are Verlander while you are having arm woes, you still can type and knock out a tweet.
The 37-year-old took to social media to announce the original report of a strained forearm was correct and he will miss a couple of weeks.
The report that I’m currently missing the rest of the season is not accurate. There is a forearm strain… I’m hopeful that with some rest it will heal and I’ll be able to return soon. Thank you for all the well wishes. 🙏🏻

SP Clayton Kershaw takes the mound on Opening Day for the ninth time in the past 10 seasons for the Dodgers. He has owned the Giants over his career with a 1.74 ERA and 350 strikeouts in 342 1/31 career innings. He has given up two or fewer runs in eight of his last 13 starts against the Giants from 2017 to 2019. In his last five Opening Day starts, Kershaw is 3-1 over 30 2/3 innings pitched, striking out 40 batters and allowing only six earned runs.
While Giants SP Johnny Cueto doesn’t have the Hall of Fame resume of Kershaw, he has pitched well in his career against the Dodgers. His record is only 4-5 in Los Angeles, but he has a 2.36 ERA and 1.066 WHIP at Dodgers Stadium.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs: CHC moneyline (-129)
It wouldn’t be a bad idea if the Brewers went with an opener in their first game. Instead, SP Brandon Woodruff will take the mound. He’s 0-0 in five appearances against the Cubs with a 6.75 ERA.
Chicago sends out SP Kyle Hendricks who was dominant at home last season with a 6-2 record in 14 starts with a 2.04 ERA and a 0.874 WHIP. He has pitched well against Milwaukee in his career as well, going 8-6 with a 3.08 ERA all-time against the Brewers. Neither team lost key contributors to their lineups and the Cubs had more production in the box in 2019.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres: SDP moneyline (-129)
The Diamondbacks signed SP Madison Bumgarner this offseason to replace the loss of former ace Zack Greinke and he gets the start on Opening Day. He has been pretty average, by his standards, in San Diego. Bumgarner is 5-7 with a 3.75 ERA in his career at Petco Park.
Arizona beat up on San Diego in 2019. They were 8-2 in their last 10 games versus the Padres and finished 15 games better than them in the NL West last season. Diego’s promising 24-year-old SP Chris Paddack pitched well in his three starts against Arizona. Paddack was 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA and struck out 20 batters over 16 2/3 innings pitched.
Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros: HOU -1.5 run line (-139)
This is probably the chalkiest bet of the whole parlay but there’s a reason why Houston is heavily favored. The Astros had the best winning percentage against division opponents in 2019, the Mariners had the fourth-lowest. Houston has beaten Seattle in 13 straight games and won 18 of 19 meetings last season.
Seattle’s Opening Day starter is Marco Gonzales, who’s 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in his career against Houston. Expect 2019 AL Cy Young Award winner SP Justin Verlander to be in mid-season form after spending the offseason dealing with the Astros’ sign-stealing controversy and a groin injury which had him set to miss the original Opening Day.

Justin Verlander is donating his MLB paychecks to fund coronavirus relief
The Astros ace is stepping up to help others during the coronavirus crisis.
Astros ace Justin Verlander is stepping up to help those in need during the coronavirus crisis. Verlander announced alongside his wife Kate Upton that he will be donating each of his upcoming MLB paychecks to different organizations that are currently working to help those affected by the crisis.
Verlander says the money will go to aid families dealing with employment issues as millions have lost their jobs across the country, as well as to “healthcare workers and first responders on the front lines.”
“Recently the @mlb announced they will be continuing to send paychecks to players while the season is suspended. @kateupton and I have decided to donate those funds to a different organization each week so that we can support their efforts and highlight the great work they’re doing during the COVID-19 crisis. Everyone around the world is affected by this virus, and we hope to contribute to the families and jobs affected, the healthcare workers and first responders on the front lines and the many others in need of basic necessities, medical supplies and support at home. As soon as the first paycheck is received we will be highlighting the first organization. We know everyone is impacted by this crisis, but for those who are able, we encourage you to stay home to help flatten the curve and look to those around you who need a helping hand. #covid19 #flattenthecurve”

Previewing the American League Cy Young Award odds, with MLB betting odds, picks and best bets
Ordinarily, I avoid taking the low-return picks when you’re taking one player against the field, but the race for the 2020 American League Cy Young Award got interesting in a hurry with preseason injuries.
As a result, the options for picking the Cy Young winner have slimmed down with three weeks to go until the season’s first pitch.
As of 5 p.m. ET Sunday, March 8, BetMGM has 12 other pitchers with odds of less than +3000:

American League Cy Young: Breaking down the field
The field is going to shift like a pendulum with spring training injuries to Sale and Snell. Both are expected to miss significant time, which will likely take them out of the running.
And Sunday afternoon, the Astros pulled Verlander after two innings of a scheduled four-inning start due to triceps soreness. There is no word on whether Verlander could miss any time, but it’s yet another injury to keep an eye on.

One thing that is crystal clear is that BetMGM has a lot of faith in the Tampa Bay starting rotation. Three of the top eight plays are Rays (Snell, Morton and Glasnow). I don’t share that opinion because they’re reaching on expectation for both Snell (injured) and Glasnow (unproven). The club is formidable, but that prevents the Rays from relying on one or two guys and occasionally pushing them up in the rotation when scheduled off days or rainouts bring an ace’s start time back up.
Clevinger and Bieber are another tandem that are intriguing, but the Indians may not provide the consistent run support needed to post the numbers that make a player stand out in the Cy Young race.
Verlander remains a dominant pitcher and is coming off a 21-win, 300-strikeout year and was a whopping 7.8 games above replacement. But, at age 37, the wall for starting pitchers with his mileage numbers is getting closer (as evidenced by Sunday’s news).
But, if you’re betting on this race, you have to go with Cole, despite the small return on investment. He was a good in Pittsburgh but became elite when he went to Houston before the 2018 season. In two seasons with the Astros, Cole made 65 starts and posted a record of 35-10 with 602 strikeouts in 412 2/3 innings, a 0.962 WHIP and a 2.68 ERA. He now goes to the Yankees where he can expect a lot of run support every start and get the wins to match or surpass what he did with the Astros. New York has eyes on the Yankees 24/7 and he has the chance to be the big man in the Big Apple.
THE BET: Take Cole and don’t look back. If you’re looking for a long shot to drop a few bucks on, consider Minnesota’s Jose Berrios (+4000). He is the staff ace of a team capable of winning 100 games again this year. When he is on his game, he can be dominant. Consistency is all that’s missing and he will be playing from ahead. Don’t break the bank on him, but, at +4000, you don’t have to.

Nichols: If Verlander and Fitzgerald are fans, why aren’t you?
If superstars like NFL receiver Larry Fitzgerald and MLB pitcher Justin Verlander can love the LPGA, why can’t you?
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – At the end of Friday’s round, Larry Fitzgerald and Justin Verlander posed for a picture with Inbee Park. Then Kate Upton, Verlander’s supermodel wife, stepped in to get her own photo with Park.
There are three household names listed in the above paragraph. Park, the LPGA Hall of Famer, is not one of them.
That’s the beauty of the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions. That’s the potential of this event, bringing an all-world player like Park more attention in the U.S. sports landscape.
The LPGA should tape a commercial with Fitzgerald, who recently resigned with the Arizona Cardinals for a 17th season in the NFL. Fitzgerald said he watches more LPGA coverage than the PGA Tour and admires their swings, attention to detail and accuracy.
On Friday at Tranquilo Golf Club, Fitzgerald spent five hours at the Inbee Park School of Golf and he soaked up every second of it. Park shares the lead at the midway point with Canada’s sweetheart, Brooke Henderson.
“It was just phenomenal how she’s able to stay completely focused on every single shot,” said Fitzgerald. “From her pace of play in terms of her walk, to how methodical she is in everything she does. It was a real clinic to be able to watch her out there perform in 20 mph wind.”
Park, a seven-time major winner who won the gold medal in the 2016 Olympics, had to Google Fitzgerald and Verlander after the tee times came out. She was stunned not only by their talent on the golf course, but Fitzgerald’s women’s golf knowledge too. He asked Park if she got the first-place check after Lydia Ko won the 2012 Canadian Women’s Open as an amateur. He remembered that Park finished second that week.
Verlander, pitcher for the Houston Astros, wasn’t interested in talking to the media about baseball, for obvious reasons. General manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch were fired by the Astros and suspended one season by Major League Baseball after failing to prevent a sign-stealing scheme during the organization’s 2017 World Series-winning season. But he did comment on Park’s ability to stay out of trouble and called LPGA players “incredible athletes.”
“Today was a lot of fun,” said Verlander. “She’s got a new fan in me, and I’ll be rooting for her for a long time to come.”
There’s a Hall of Famer on top of the board in the celebrity division in former MLB pitcher John Smoltz. Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux are here too, along with Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez. NFL Hall of Famers include Marcus Allen, Richard Dent and Brian Urlacher, who was chatting down the first fairway with Nelly Korda.
Diamond Resorts CEO Mike Flaskey put the pairings together for the second round and was rightfully pleased with his work in the 9:20 a.m. group.
“I knew that (Inbee) was the player of the decade,” said Flaskey. “I feel like you have two sure-fire Hall of Famers in Larry in the NFL and Justin with baseball. I thought it was a perfect pairing.”
Fitzgerald isn’t the only athlete in the field who had contract news this week. Josh Donaldson reportedly agreed to a four-year, $92 million deal with the Minnesota Twins.
Park ranks fourth on the LPGA’s career money list with $15,356,126. The 31-year-old joined the LPGA in 2007 and spent 106 weeks at No. 1 in the world.
The exposure that these high-profile athletes bring to the LPGA could, in time, raise the tour’s value in the U.S. More people watched the final round of the Diamond Resorts event last year on NBC than the U.S. Women’s Open on Fox. It was the most-watched season-opening event on the LPGA in 10 years.
Verlander, Upton and Fitzgerald have a combined Twitter following of 6.3 million. Upton has 6.2 million alone on Instagram.
In many ways, it still feels like the LPGA is one of sports’ best-kept secrets. With a little love, these folks can help change that.
“I’ve played with guys who hit it 330, 340,” said Fitzgerald, “but the way Inbee was able to take the par 5s apart, be spot on with her wedges. Just didn’t miss a fairway all day. That’s real talent.”
He should know.

Included in the visit was some memorabilia for Verlander. Watson gave the 2019 AL Cy Young winner a signed, game-worn jersey — though not the color rush one he won in the win.

Though an age difference — Watson at 24, Verlander at 36 — and a sport one, Watson and Verlander have formed a tight bond since their own 2017 arrivals in Houston. The two have had dinners together and breakdown film.
“I guess we just kind of relate that way, but honestly, I was blown away after the first time meeting him,” said Verlander on Oct. 17. “Just his demeanor how smart he was. His charisma, all the things that you want to see a young athlete.”
Regular, while walking the streets of Houston, you will see Watson and Verlander jerseys littered through the crowd. You may also see Verlander rocking a Watson one and vice-versa.
