The topic surrounding Thursday Night Football games’ impact on players’ preparation time and recovery has been discussed for years. The Kansas City Chiefs enter Week 6 against the Denver Broncos with their second Thursday night game following the opening night loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1.

Chiefs safety Justin Reid is one of the many players who have suggestions on helping to make the Thursday night transition smoother. During Tuesday’s press conference, Reporters suggested a possible extra bye week for those teams, and Reid revealed his thoughts on the situation.

“Yeah, I think that would be nice,” Reid said. “If there was a way to set it up, it might be extra biweekly to be able to split them in half. That way, get a little bit extra rest, and maybe it is better for everyone’s body. But at the end of the day, you know, the cards are on the table as they are, and we gotta go play.”

The Chiefs are expected to be a prominently featured team since winning Super Bowl LVII and having All-Pro stars such as Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, and Travis Kelce. The popularity and success of the franchise will constantly put them in marquee television spots, so the team is well aware of the spotlight to perform at their best.

Chiefs S Justin Reid shows appreciation for Kansas City after missing wallet is returned

The Kansas City Chiefs are visiting the Meadowlands in New Jersey for Sunday night’s matchup with the New York Jets. One of their starters on defense will be traveling with less stress on his mind after a good samaritan assisted personally.

Chiefs safety Justin Reid is feeling relief as his missing wallet was returned on Friday by a local fan in Kansas City. The wallet was returned, with a note from the fan saying that their daughter Heidi was happy to have found it. Reid thanked the little girl via social media with a photo of her personalized letter.

“The folks here in Kansas City are amazing,” Reid said in a post on Twitter. “I lost my wallet last week (you guys know the feeling) and was this close to canceling and reordering the cards before I got the message that it was found. Thank you Heidi!”

Reid should have a clearer mind heading into Week 4, and it’s all thanks to the Kansas City community.

Chiefs S Justin Reid relishes target on Kansas City’s back in 2023

The defense will be the story for critics tuning into the Kansas City Chiefs’ opening game of the regular season on Thursday. The absence of All-Pro Chris Jones is an ongoing hot topic for the unit and their ability to succeed without him, possibly long-term.

Kansas City will prepare for their matchup against the Detroit Lions with more than just their concerns for the status of Jones. They will have their latest Super Bowl banner unveiled at Arrowhead Stadium with a special opening night celebration ahead of the game.

Chiefs safety Justin Reid isn’t thinking about the festivities as he discussed with reporters on Sunday. He’s more enticed by the idea of the team having a target on their backs after becoming champions.

“Yeah. I mean, the page is already turned on it,” Reid said. “I honestly probably won’t even see the banner go up and be focused on getting prepared for playing a football game against Detroit Lions and focusing on this season. What we did last year was great, you know, but that’s last year, and that won’t help us win a football game this year. You know, just paint a bigger target on our back. We know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot. So we’re gonna have to play our best ball and be prepared for it.”

The Chiefs have been perennial title contenders since Patrick Mahomes became the starting quarterback. The attention from their success has led opponents to prepare differently for the Chiefs, looking to prove themselves against the league’s elite.

“You want to play against good football teams. You can’t judge yourself by just playing against bad opponents,” Reid explained. “When you get to get everybody’s best shot, there’s a level of respect and just a competitive nature when you get everybody’s best shot. You know, all cars are on the table. There’s no excuses. When you go out and play, and it’s Man on Man, battle of wills, and see who comes out on top?”

Thursday’s nationally televised game will begin the new season for the league so all eyes will be on Kansas City. The Chiefs won their regular season opener in 2020 against the Houston Texans with a reduced crowd due to COVID protocols.

Justin Reid hopes to help second-year Chiefs DBs avoid sophomore slump

#Chiefs safety Justin Reid intends to do everything he can to keep Kansas City’s second-year defensive backs on track in 2023.

The Kansas City Chiefs invested heavily in their defensive backfield last season, going so far as to draft five defensive backs in the 2022 draft.

That investment paid off, with the “fab five” of Trent McDuffie, Bryan Cook, Joshua Williams, Jaylen Watson, and Nazeeh Johnson all playing big roles on Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVII squad.

Now, entering year two, four of those five (Johnson not included due to a recent season-ending injury) make up the core of the Chiefs’ secondary unit. McDuffie is the team’s top cornerback option alongside veteran L’Jarius Sneed, while Williams and Watson project to have big roles. Cook, meanwhile, will start at safety next to sixth-year vet Justin Reid.

Reid, who enters his second season with the Chiefs, played a big role last season in making sure those newbies were ready to take on such important roles in year one.

“The biggest priority for me last year was, since we had so much work on the back end, was to make sure those guys were prepared as possible,” Reid said. “Work with them one-on-one, understand what it’s like to be a professional, practice like a professional, understand the differences in speed and alignments – just the minor details make a difference.

“I knew we (needed) them to come up big for us later in the season (and) they did. Those guys made huge plays for us. Jaylen (Watson had) multiple picks … that experience that we had is valuable for them.”

With the Chiefs leaning heavily on those same defensive backs in year two, Reid’s goal is to make sure there’s no fall in productivity.

“I’m going to stay on them to make sure there is no sophomore slump,” Reid said. “It’s easy to want to relax but you’ve got to keep the pedal to the metal in this league. Good teams turn to bad teams quick and bad teams turn to good teams quick … We’re a competitive group, but it’s a healthy competition, and we’re going to keep building.”

Safety Justin Reid absolutely nailed an extra-point kick for the Chiefs in a preseason game

Justin Reid kicked an extra point for the Chiefs. He’s a safety.

The NFL preseason is ultimately meaningless when it comes to actual ramifications for the regular season, so teams can get a little weird with things if they want just for the heck of it.

Case in point: the Kansas City Chiefs let safety Justin Reid kick an extra point on a touchdown in the third quarter of the team’s home Saturday preseason game against the Cleveland Browns.

This is absolutely the kind of delightful nonsense that preseason is for, and it was made even better by Reid nailing the kick and putting a point on the board for Kansas City with his foot.

We absolutely need more non-kickers taking kicks in the NFL preseason.

Hey, when the game is made up and the points don’t matter, you might as well have some fun. Who’s kick is it anyway, am I right?

Reid can now count himself as an emergency place kicker for extra points in the regular season since he’s got compelling tape to prove his skills.

WATCH: Chiefs S Justin Reid converts extra point vs. Browns

#Chiefs safety Justin Reid stepped in to score an extra point in Kansas City’s preseason finale against the #Browns.

Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid is known as a defensive leader, but it is his role as an emergency kicker that was notable on Saturday against the Cleveland Browns.

After the Chiefs evened the score late in the third quarter, Reid came on to kick an extra point to take the lead.

This was a booming kick that went through the uprights with ease. Reid’s leg has proven to be a valuable asset for Kansas City in the past, and his ability to fill in on extra points and three-point field goals shouldn’t go unnoticed.

While this kick is likely to be nothing more than a preseason novelty, Reid a scored point on special teams last year in the Chiefs’ march to Super Bowl LVII. When Harrison Butker went down with an injury in Week 1 back in 2022, Reid stepped in to convert one of his two extra-point attempts against the Arizona Cardinals to help lift Kansas City to its first win of the Super Bowl campaign.

5 Chiefs with something to prove against Cardinals in preseason Week 2

These five #Chiefs should play with chips on their shoulders against the #Cardinals on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs had several standouts in their loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, but others were not so impressive. Luckily, they’ll have their chance to redeem themselves against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday as they look to earn their spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster for the 2023 regular season.

While the Chiefs’ first-team units are relatively safe, their pool of talent deeper down on their depth chart is competing for jobs heading into Kansas City’s second preseason tilt.

These five players in particular should play with a chip on their shoulders against Arizona on Saturday:

Chiefs duds in preseason Week 1 loss at Saints

These #Chiefs left something to be desired in Kansas City’s loss to the #Saints on Sunday.

The Chiefs’ 26-24 preseason Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints wasn’t exactly a pretty game. There were some standouts for Kansas City, sure — even some studs — but there were plenty who didn’t exactly show out, either.

Below are Chiefs players who had a rough game in the first week of the preseason, and may have even hurt their stock a little in the process:

Chiefs safety Justin Reid on rookies: ‘We want them to be confident’

#Chiefs safety Justin Reid stressed the importance of confidence in his comments after Kansas City’s loss to the #Saints.

Confidence is key in the NFL and Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid knows all too well how much his team’s young contributors need an extra boost after a loss like they took on Sunday.

Reid spoke to reporters after the Chiefs’ defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Saints and told the media that, despite the loss, he intends to make sure Kansas City’s rookies keep their spirits high.

“We [want] to juice them up. We want them to be confident,” Reid said of the Chiefs’ young guns. “We would love for everybody to make the team. That, unfortunately, isn’t how it works in the NFL. There’s going to be cuts. We want everybody to go out there and put good tape out there so that even if you don’t make the team here, you still have an opportunity somewhere else. There are some guys who took advantage of some opportunities out there. [They need to] keep their heads high, keep them playing hard, playing fast, making plays. They did a lot of good things.”

Reid and the rest of Kansas City’s roster will take Sunday’s loss in stride ahead of their next preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on August 19. If his comments are any indication, Reid won’t let the team’s rookies get too down on themselves as they learn Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive system and develop their talents before the start of the 2023 regular season in September.

Chiefs safety Justin Reid reflected on covering Travis Kelce in his rookie preseason debut

#Chiefs safety Justin Reid reflected on his rookie preseason debut when he covered Travis Kelce as a member of the Houston Texans. | from: @EdEastonJr

The first preseason game serves as a dress rehearsal for each team in the NFL before the regular season, and the Kansas City Chiefs will begin their journey toward Super Bowl defense next Sunday against the New Orleans Saints in their preseason opener.

Chiefs safety Justin Reid has continued to be outspoken about helping to develop Kansas City’s rookies ahead of the new season. He opened up to reporters following Saturday’s practice about his experience as a rookie with the Houston Texans entering his first preseason game against the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium.

“So, my rookie year, the first game I played preseason was right here in Kansas City, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead, and the first guy I guarded was Travis Kelce,” Reid explained. “He caught like a 12-yard, 14-yard curl on me. I’ll always remember that. [In your] rookie year it’s all about proving yourself to the team, showing the team what you have.

“The playbook is going to be very simple on gameday, it’s going to be very generic across the board. You just want guys to go out and play fast and see what they can do in a live setting. The difference now is, you know you’re going to be starting, you want to make sure you’re getting healthy, you want to make sure your routines are right and that you’re ready to go.”

Reid has been praised throughout training camp for his mentorship of the Chiefs’ young secondary. The approach of revealing his experiences and working on day-to-day fundamentals have made him an invaluable piece of Kansas City’s Super Bowl repeat aspirations.
