The build-up for Super Bowl LIX is well underway, with the Kansas City Chiefs pursuing history against the Philadelphia Eagles. The players are gearing up to enhance their legacies in the biggest game of the year, with more than the Lombardi trophy on the line.

Chiefs safety Justin Reid has known nothing but success with the Chiefs throughout his tenure, and this year’s Super Bowl has extra meaning for the new father and Louisiana native. Reid spoke with reporters about the many tickets he purchased for friends and family before the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

“Those ticket prices are running up, man, said Reid. “Like, I got 30 of them. We’re excited to play, and we’re chasing glory, but we gotta win just for me to break even.”

Reid’s revealing comments at the press conference were met with plenty of laughter as the veteran defensive back continued to produce on the field this season. The veteran defensive back has been among the team leaders in tackles during the postseason. Reid remains one of the pass rushers out of the secondary during special Steve Spagnuolo blitz schemes.

Chiefs Dave Toub credits veteran DB for success on blocked field goals: ‘He studies tape’

Kansas City #Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub credits Justin Reid for success on blocked field goals: ‘He studies tape’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ success on special teams throughout the season has been credited to their special teams coordinator, Dave Toub. During Thursday’s press conference, Toub revealed the secret to their string of blocked field goals this season: veteran safety Justin Reid.

“He (Justin Reid) studies a lot of tape. He’s the main reason why we’re getting these blocks because he gets off – such a great get off on the edge and it makes everybody respond to that and it opens up gaps for Leo (Chenal) who is like a couple men down – a couple spots down from him,” said Toub. “He studies tape, he watches the snapper’s movements. Could be a squeezing of the hand, it could be a dip of the hips, whatever it is to indicate that the snap is imminent. He has a great get-off; I mean, he was tied to the football just about in that game – on two of them. It made a difference.”

Reid has not only led the secondary and occasionally kicked off during games, but his contributions to field goal block coverage have helped win games and were essential in the divisional round block against the Houston Texans. He will again be counted on for those big moments this Sunday in the AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills.

The routine meetings between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills, regardless if it’s the regular season or playoffs, have consistently lived up to the hype. Veteran safety Justin Reid shared his thoughts on the rivalry during a conversation with reporters on Wednesday.

“It feels like a divisional game. I mean, we know them really well, and they know us really well,” said Reid. In the offseason, both of us are preparing for each other because we know we’re going to come against each other, probably twice, like it feels like every year.”

Reid finished last Saturday’s victory over the Houston Texans with seven tackles, a pass deflection, and pass rush moments against C.J. Stroud. He understands the challenge with Buffalo will be much different on Sunday with MVP candidate Josh Allen.

“It’s one of the best matchups to play because they’re such a talented football team, they have so much firepower, (offensive coordinator) Joe Brady’s done an awesome job with Josh Allen and that offense, gotten them fired up, and their defense is playing amazing, too,” said Reid. “Always a tough challenge, but one that we’re excited for, week-in and week-out, and it’ll be another storybook show for all the viewers watching on TV.”

The AFC Championship game will close out the championship Sunday as the NFC will start the day and have one-half of the Super Bowl already set.

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on staying motivated for postseason: ‘Why would we back off?’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has seen his defense evolve each season and make strides to improve this year, especially in the secondary and defensive line. On Thursday, he spoke with reporters about keeping the team motivated for two weeks, during which they won’t have a meaningful game until the postseason divisional round.

“The first PowerPoint that I put up on Tuesday was, ‘Do Not Lose Your Edge.’ We’ve went two-and-a-half months of off-season work. We went, whatever it’s been, five-and-a-half months since July of all this work to get to this point.” said Spagnuolo. “Why would we back off? Why would we lose our edge? I’m talking about it in preparation and how the guys practice, what they might do with their bodies physically, rest, all those things. That was an emphasis at the beginning.”

Pro Bowler Chris Jones continues to lead the defensive line, featuring plenty of contributions from George Karlaftis, who has eight sacks on the season. Tershawn Wharton has a single-season career-high of 6.5 this year. Felix Anudike-Uzomah has 2.5 sacks, and Mike Danna now owns 3.5 sacks during the season.

“We’ve also challenged our guys – look, depending on where this all goes and we have this Week 18 to figure out who the playoff team – there’s a chance we play this team (Denver Broncos) again,” said Spagnuolo. “So if I’m sitting there listening to all the information about Denver’s offense, I want to accumulate that for – you know, to be ready for this – not only this game but in the chance that we end up playing them again.”

In the secondary, Pro Bowl snub, Trent McDuffie, along with his two interceptions, has seven career forced fumbles. He finished the Week 17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers with four total tackles, one pass defensed, and one forced fumble. Justin Reid had two interceptions on the season, and rookie cornerback Chris Roland-Wallace led the Kansas City defense in tackles on Christmas Day with ten.

Though the Chiefs still haven’t managed to score 30 or more points in a single game during their 2024 campaign, the defending Super Bowl champions’ offensive output in Week 17 was more than enough to pull away from the Steelers on the scoreboard.

Patrick Mahomes completed 29 of his 38 passing attempts for 310 yards and threw three touchdown passes that kept Kansas City on top.

Defensively, the Chiefs’ pass rush dominated Pittsburgh’s front five, tallying five sacks in the game. Kansas City’s secondary held Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to 205 passing yards, and veteran safety Justin Reid came away with the Chiefs’ only interception in the game.

Chiefs DB Justin Reid praises secondary depth: ‘Guys have been able to come in and make plays’

Kansas City #Chiefs DB Justin Reid praises secondary depth: ‘Guys have been able to come in and make plays’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid has embraced his leadership role in a young secondary. During Thursday’s press conference, he shared his thoughts on their progression and overcoming all the injuries.

“The way it’s been all year has been the next guy up. We’ve had a constant rotation and have confidence in whoever is on the field. Chris Roland Wallace has been making plays.” said Reid. “Chamarri (Conner), if he is able to make it, he’ll be in there, and he’ll be making some plays for us. Josh Williams comes in and makes plays. Nazeeh Johnson comes in and makes plays. So, it doesn’t matter. Jaden Hicks, Bryan Cook, it doesn’t matter who’s on the field; when you’re on the field, you’re a starter.”

In the first quarter of their Week 15 victory against the Cleveland Browns, Bryan Cook intercepted a deep pass down the middle of the field from Jameis Winston, his second on the season. In the fourth quarter, Trent McDuffie recorded his first career interception, and with 1:26 left in the game, Jaden Hicks intercepted Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

“We have faith in all those guys to come in and perform,” said Reid. We have the record we have, because guys have been able to come in and make plays when we need them to.”

The injuries have sometimes hampered the Chiefs secondary, forcing the depth signing of veteran cornerback Steven Nelson last week.
