Every coach Titans have hired to Brian Callahan’s staff so far

Titans head coach Brian Callahan still has some positions to fill on his coaching staff, but here’s everyone who has been hired thus far.

After firing former head coach Mike Vrabel and hiring new head coach Brian Callahan, the Tennessee Titans have made several changes to the coaching staff.

The Titans are, however, holding on to at least two coaches from Vrabel’s staff.

Per Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, Tennessee is keeping Chris Harris as defensive run-game coordinator and cornerbacks coach and Justin Outten is being moved from running backs coach and run-game coordinator to tight ends coach, a position he once held with the Green Bay Packers.

As of this writing, the Titans have yet to fill three notable positions, including defensive line coach, outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.

The former positions were held by Terrell Williams and Ryan Crow, but they have since been hired by the Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins, respectively.

Tennessee has interviewed Thomas McGaughey for special teams coordinator but he was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

All that said, here’s a look at Callahan’s staff so far.

Titans keeping 2 coaches from Mike Vrabel’s staff

The Titans are reportedly keeping two coaches from former head coach Mike Vrabel’s staff.

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly keeping at least two assistant coaches from former head coach Mike Vrabel’s staff.

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, Tennessee is retaining Chris Harris and Justin Outten. Kuharsky notes that Harris will stay in his role as cornerbacks coach and defensive pass-game coordinator and Outten will go from running backs coach and run-game coordinator to tight ends coach.

Outten has coached tight ends before after serving in the role with the Green Bay Packers from 2019-2021.

In addition, Kuharsky’s report revealed that newly-hired coach Steve Jackson will be in charge of the safeties.

Taking Outten’s place is former Washington Commanders running backs coach Randy Jordan, who was reportedly hired by the team on Saturday.

As of this writing, the most notable positions on the coaching staff left to fill are outside linebackers coach, defensive line coach and special teams coordinator.

We haven’t seen any reports of the Titans interviewing candidates for the former two positions. Tennessee did reportedly interview former New York Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, who has since been hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Titans blocked interview requests for RBs coach Justin Outten

The Titans may be holding on to running backs coach and run-game coordinator Justin Outten.

It appears the Tennessee Titans and head coach Brian Callahan are set to keep at least one coach from former head coach Mike Vrabel’s staff.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the Titans have blocked multiple interview requests for running backs coach and run-game coordinator Justin Outten.

This would seem to indicate that the Titans plan on holding on to Outten, who was hired in 2023. Prior to his stint in Nashville, he served as the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.

Despite having a terrible offensive line, Tennessee’s run game actually had some success.

Derrick Henry finished with 1,167 rushing yards and 12 scores, ranking second and tied for seventh in the NFL, respectively. Rookie Tyjae Spears was also a standout, with his 838 yards from scrimmage and 453 rushing yards ranking fourth and fifth among first-year backs, respectively.

As of this writing, the Titans have made two hires to their offensive staff with offensive coordinator Nick Holz and wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert, thus Outten’s role is still clear for him to return to if the Titans choose.

Titans coach Justin Outten has chance to stay on Brian Callahan’s staff

Titans run-game coordinator and running backs coach Justin Outten reportedly has a chance to stay on Brian Callahan’s staff.

As the Tennessee Titans continue to purge the staff of former head coach Mike Vrabel, it appears at least one assistant coach has a chance to stay.

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, Titans run-game coordinator and running backs coach Justin Outten has not been let go yet and has a shot to remain with the team.

Hired by the Titans in 2023, Outten oversaw a backfield that played well but was clearly hindered by a terrible offensive line.

Despite that issue, Derrick Henry managed to tally 1,167 rushing yards and 12 scores, ranking second and tied for seventh in the NFL, respectively.

Tyjae Spears was also impressive, with the rookie totaling 838 yards from scrimmage and 435 rushing yards, ranking fourth and fifth among rookie backs.

Knowing all that, it isn’t surprising to see the Titans interested in keeping him around.

This is the second time we’ve seen a report about a Vrabel assistant having a shot to remain on new head coach Brian Callahan’s staff. The team is also holding on to defensive coordinator Shane Bowen for now.

Two Titans coaches listed among potential OC candidates for 2024

Two Titans coaches were listed among those to keep an eye on for potential offensive coordinator jobs around the league in 2024.

In a recent article naming some of the top offensive coordinator candidates for openings around the league in 2024, two Tennessee Titans assistant coaches were listed among them.

According to NBC Sports’ Peter King, Titans quarterbacks coach and pass-game coordinator Charles London and running backs coach and run-game coordinator Justin Outten are coaches to keep an eye on for offensive coordinator vacancies.

Here’s what King said about London:

Charles London, 48, QB coach/pass-game coordinator, Tennessee. A student of the run game who now has coached quarterbacks in Atlanta and Tennessee. Probably unfair to judge Tennessee’s passing game this year in a season of immense transition, but London’s work with Will Levis to get him to play well early is a credit to him. Well-respected as a teacher and idea person.

And here’s his write-up on Outten:

Justin Outten, 40, running backs coach/run-game coordinator, Tennessee. Interesting career path after being a center for Syracuse two decades ago. Entered the league in 2016 as a coaching intern under Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta, then worked for Matt LaFleur, also off the Shanahan/McVay tree, in Green Bay for three years before Nathaniel Hackett hired him as OC in Denver last year. Now rebuilding his rep under Mike Vrabel. Bright and experienced.

While the Titans’ offense struggled overall in 2023, the job London did in the development of rookie quarterback Will Levis, who was impressive in his first season, is a big reason he should be considered a strong candidate.

As far as Outten is concerned, the Titans’ run game wasn’t at its best, no doubt, but Derrick Henry still managed to break 1,000 yards despite a horrendous offensive line.

Adding to that, rookie Tyjae Spears came along nicely and put together a strong rookie campaign, putting him in line to be the lead back in 2024.

Considering how important it is to keep things consistent for a rookie signal-caller like Levis, losing London would be the much bigger blow.

Tennessee should be doing all it can to keep him, but at the end of the day the Titans might not have a say in the matter, barring them firing offensive coordinator Tim Kelly and offering the job to London.

5 Titans make annual list of ‘NFL coaches to watch’

Five Titans made an annual list of assistant coaches to watch for future head coach openings.

Every year, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero releases a list of assistant coaches to watch when it comes to head-coach openings in the following offseason and in the years that follow.

On this year’s list, which featured a ton of names, five Tennessee Titans coaches made the cut, highlighted by defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, who was mentioned as a coach to watch for the upcoming hiring cycle.

Here’s what Pelissero had to say about Bowen, who he notes is “well-regarded” around the league:

A former Georgia Tech linebacker whose playing career ended early because of injury, Bowen is now in his eighth season as an NFL coach and third as Tennessee’s defensive play-caller. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has a defensive background and has input on everything in the building, but Bowen runs the show on his side of the ball, from game planning to installs to meetings. Despite personnel challenges and a slim margin for error due to offensive struggles, Tennessee’s defense remains a top-10 unit in points allowed. And Bowen is well-regarded within the league.

Along with Bowen, outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow, defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach Chris Harris, offensive coordinator Tim Kelly and run game coordinator and running backs coach Justin Outten were listed as coaches to watch in cycles beyond 2024.

It’s true the Titans sport a top-10 scoring defense, but that does not tell the story of the unit’s disappointing performance overall this season.

Tennessee’s pass-rush has been inconsistent and disappeared at times, the secondary is a sieve and even the once-elite run defense has gone by the wayside — and those issues won’t help some of the coaches under Bowen, either.

Of course, Bowen deserves at least some credit for the defensive success the team saw in 2021 and 2022, but many wonder if former senior defensive assistant Jim Schwartz, who is now running an elite defense with the Cleveland Browns, is the one who deserves more.

Whatever the case may be, I don’t see Bowen landing a head coach job in the upcoming cycle, barring an epic turnaround from the Titans and their defense; although, I do think he could get an interview.

As for the rest of the coaches, Harris and Crow will almost certainly need stints as coordinators first before they can set their sights on bigger things, which puts them a few years away, at least, from being considered

Outten has had an offensive coordinator job before, but that was with the awful 2022 Denver Broncos and he only called plays for a few games.

Kelly is further ahead of those three, seeing as how he’s in his second stint as an offensive coordinator in the NFL. However, his first season in charge of Tennessee’s offense has not gone too well, which will make 2024 a crucial campaign for his hopes of one day becoming a head coach.

12 ex-Broncos coaches who joined other NFL teams this offseason

Nathaniel Hackett went to the Jets, Ejiro Evero went to the Panthers and Justin Outten went to the Titans.

Denver Broncos new head coach Sean Payton is bringing a mostly-new coaching staff with him.

The Broncos will have a new head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator in 2023, plus many new assistant coaches. Some of the team’s former staff were fired, some were out of contract and not renewed, some left for other opportunities, and a handful will remain with the club.

Here’s a quick look at a dozen of the team’s coaches from the 2022 season that joined new NFL teams this offseason.

Titans make hire of RBs coach and run-game coordinator Justin Outten official

The Titans made their hire of Justin Outten official on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans made the hiring of running backs coach and run-game coordinator Justin Outten official on Tuesday, one week after it was initially reported.

Tennessee’s interest in Outten was first reported back in January, when he was requested to interview for an unknown position. Many thought it was for offensive coordinator, but that was never confirmed.

Outten served as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2022, but only called plays for two games with former head coach Nathaniel Hackett having those responsibilities before bungling them horribly.

Denver’s offense actually saw a bit of an improvement with Outten at the helm, but it’s no doubt a small sample size.

This will be the first time Outten holds either of his current titles. He was previously a tight ends coach with the Green Bay Packers under former Tennessee offensive coordinator and Packers head coach, Matt LaFleur.

The 39-year-old coach takes over for Tony Dews, who is transitioning to tight ends coach in 2023.

Broncos coaching staff update: Strength coach and TE coach on deck

The Broncos have a new tight ends coach and they are closing in on a strength and conditioning coach.

Sean Payton’s coaching staff is coming together.

After previously hiring Zach Strief as the Denver Broncos’ new offensive line coach, Payton is now expected to add two more former members of the New Orleans Saints’ coaching staff.

Dan Dalrymple, who served as the Saints’ head strength and conditioning coach from 2006-2022, is “firmly in the mix” to accept the same role in Denver, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are set to hire ex-New Orleans offensive assistant Declan Doyle, according to neworleans.football’s Nick Underhill. Doyle is expected to become Denver’s new tight ends coach.

Elsewhere on the coaching front, offensive coordinator Justin Outten has left the Broncos to become the new running backs coach for the Tennessee Titans. Denver’s list of candidates to replace Outten includes Ronald Curry, another former Saint.

On the other side of the ball, Payton has interviewed six candidates for the team’s defensive coordinator position. We are tracking all of the Broncos’ coaching staff changes on this page.

Report: Titans hiring Justin Outten as RBs coach

The Titans have reportedly hired former Broncos OC Justin Outten as their running backs coach.

The Tennessee Titans have made yet another addition to their coaching staff, with the team reportedly adding a running backs coach on Tuesday.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Tennessee is hiring former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Justin Outten to replace Tony Dews, who is now coaching tight ends, as running backs coach. He will also serve as run-game coordinator.

The Titans were reportedly interested in Outten back in January, but it wasn’t clear for what role.

Prior to serving as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator, Outten was the tight ends coach for the Green Bay Packers (2019-21) under former Titans offensive coordinator, Matt LaFleur.

While Outten was the offensive coordinator for Denver’s offense, which was one of the worst in the NFL last season, he didn’t start calling plays until Week 17.

During his time as play-caller, the Broncos saw improvement in their offense, albeit in a very limited sample size. His approach? Stressing the run game and molding the offense to his quarterback’s strengths.

Outten is just the latest coaching staff hire after Tennessee announced a shake-up at several spots, highlighted by the hiring of new offensive coordinator, Tim Kelly.
