The ultra-rare trading card should command a hefty array of bids, and is already at over $350,000.
Larry Legend has that nickname for a reason, and the iconic Boston Celtics forward better known as Larry Bird may soon see his likeness alongside two of his peers from that era of NBA basketball fetch a record return in the form of a trading card auction, reports TMZ.
The ultra-rare 1980-1981 Topps Scoring Leader sports trading card features Bird, his biggest rival in Los Angeles Laker Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and Philadelphia 76ers and American Basketball Association legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving, and is slated to be auctioned by sports memorabilia resale experts SCP Auction for as much as a half-million dollars based on early estimates.
That the card is graded in mint condition — one of only 24 known to exist — is what sets the bar so high.
So, if you happen to have a half milly in liquid assets lying around, this keepsake could very well be yours.
Assuming the price tag doesn’t get bid even higher.

LeBron James has taken more heat over his career than just about anybody who has played in the NBA. His days in the league have all basically come during the time of social media, where it has been easy for nameless idiots who haven’t done anything with their own lives to rip a guy who has done just about everything right in his.
This is what Dr. J had to say to Yahoo’s Chris Haynes: “He’s the guy who has led the charge in terms of super teams being put together. He put together the team in Miami. He put the team together in Cleveland, as well. And put together the team in Los Angeles. So he can pick his own team. I’m not going to pick his team.”
Holy sour grapes, Dr. J!
Listen, putting together top 10 lists of all-time players is always a silly thing to do because there are so many great players and everyone will have their feelings on which guys should make the list and which guys should be left off.
But this is the silliest of all snubs by Dr. J. LeBron is easily one of the top two players to have ever played in the league. It’s Michael Jordan and LeBron James and then everyone else. And if he’s not in one of your top two spots then he has to be in your top 10 because if you leave him off that then you’re just being a hater for no good reason than being jealous of what he’s accomplished.
Has LeBron benefited from playing on good teams? Yes, of course. But if you look back through the history of the NBA you’ll see championship teams all had lots of good players on them. That’s how they won championships!
What LeBron James has accomplished in his career has been incredible and how he continues to play (when he’s healthy) at his age after all the games and battles he’s been in is incredible.
He’s a special talent that we’ve been blessed to have watched for all these years and any top 10 list without his name somewhere in there is just a silly waste of time.
Quick hits: These NFL draft dads will make you feel old… Justin Fields > Mac Jones… Pro golfer’s emotional call to his dad… And more.
We’re at that period in the NBA season that falls somewhere between the All-Star break and the final stretch of the playoff hunt, which almost always seems like the point where the NBA all-time great debate gets re-litigated for the millionth time.
You know: LeBron vs. Jordan. Or maybe LeBron vs. Jordan vs. Kobe vs. Kareem. And so on.
But you’re almost guaranteed to have that all-time debate involve LeBron somewhere near the top because, well, he’s, at worst, the second best player of all time. So, I guess we can give former NBA/ABA great Julius Erving credit for finding a way to leave LeBron out of the discussion completely — even if his justification was nonsensical. Points for originality!
“He’s the guy who has led the charge in terms of super teams…”@JuliusErving doesn't have LeBron on his top-two All-Time NBA teams 👀
In an interview with Chris Haynes, Erving said he wouldn’t put LeBron on his first two all-time, All-NBA teams because LeBron played a prominent role in the league’s superteam movement.
And yes, LeBron did play a *large* part in teaming up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. But he was far from the first player to team up with stars. Plus, playing on a team with good players didn’t change the fact that LeBron was way better than everyone else he played against.
It was a strange argument, and Haynes pointed it out to Erving that championship teams historically have had multiple All-Stars. But it was Erving’s list — he can compile it as he wants. It just won’t be taken very seriously.
Former Nets stars Vince Carter and Julius Erving give their takes on Brooklyn’s title chances.
Both Vince Carter and Julius Erving gave their thoughts on how far they see the Brooklyn Nets going this year. Vince Carter gave his take on “SportsCenter” after the Nets took care of business with Charlotte on Friday.
“Right now they’re the team to beat,” Carter said. In terms of winning the championship, the former Nets stressed, he is “still going to give it to the Nets right now just because of all the talent they have. … They have stars. They have MVPs.”
On the other hand, Julius Erving played devil’s advocate for his old team. Erving said on Danny Green’s “Inside the Green Room” podcast that he has the Philadelphia 76ers defeating Brooklyn in the playoffs: “We have an advantage coaching wise based on experience, with Doc (Rivers). … And then the ambition. I think of Ben (Simmons) and Joel (Embiid). These guys are hungry now. They’ve been projected, and they’ve been a part of what they call the process for several years.”
Vinsanity is rocking with Nets World while Julius Erving is trusting the process. If these two teams match up in the playoffs, it is going to be an epic series for sure. After the loss to the Sixers on Wednesday, Nets guard Bruce Bruce isn’t worried if the Nets are unable to secure home court advantage versus Philadelphia in the playoffs. He said he is “super confident” Brooklyn will steal a game at the Wells Fargo Center if it comes down to it.
10 members in the storied history of the Philadelphia 76ers show up on the 101 greatest nicknames list.
A nickname cannot be given or self-made, it has to be earned. Throughout the history of the NBA, we have all seen the greats earn some sort of nickname through their amazing play on the floor.
In today’s game, we know of Joel “The Process” Embiid, Damian “Dame Dolla” Lillard, LeBron “King” James, and Stephen “Chef” Curry among countless others. There have been many great nicknames in the history of the game.
The Philadelphia 76ers have seen their share of terrific players don the red, white and blue colors, and they have earned some pretty iconic nicknames. Our sister site, Rookie Wire, put together the 101 greatest nicknames in NBA history, and the Sixers have 10 players show up on the list.
The 10 Sixers on the list are as follows in descending order:
UT forward Yves Pons named a candidate for 2021 Julius Erving Award.

Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius Erving had a specific reaction to the Doc Rivers hire.
The Philadelphia 76ers are entering an exciting era of their franchise history as they have their first head coach in seven seasons.
After firing Brett Brown as the result of a disappointing 2019-20 season, the team has brought in Doc Rivers to replace him to usher in the next era. Rivers brings a lot of success and credibility to the position and there is hope that he can turn the team around moving forward.
Franchise legend Julius Erving sat down with Lauren Rosen of the Sixers’ official website and he had was excited about the hire of Rivers:
“I fell out of my chair! I was like, ‘Whoa! Man, that’s awesome,’” Erving said. “I am amped – absolutely – that he is the coach of the Sixers.”
Philadelphia is a team that boasts a lot of history and a lot of legends that have graced their uniform and Erving is one of those aforementioned legends. If he can sign off on a guy like Rivers, maybe the Sixers can really move forward with this roster and he can lead them into a new, successful era of Sixers basketball.
