Giants sign OL Julién Davenport, waive LB Troy Brown

The New York Giants signed OT Julién Davenport following a workout in East Rutherford on Tuesday and waived/injured LB Troy Brown.

The New York Giants rested most of their starters and had a few reserves sit out last Friday night against the Detroit Lions, but one thing was still glaringly obvious: they have depth issues along the offensive line.

Perhaps more specifically, the Giants have depth issues at offensive tackle behind Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal, who remains in concussion protocol.

In an effort to remedy that, the Giants held workouts on Tuesday in East Rutherford led by offensive line coach Bobby Johnson.

Among those in attendance were Julien Davenport and Lorenz Metz, with the former ultimately getting signed.

The 6-foot-7, 315-pound Davenport was originally a fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2017. He quickly became a journeyman, spending time with the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and Arizona Cardinals in addition to the Texans.

In six seasons, the 28-year-old Davenport has appeared in 60 career games with 32 starts. His last regular season appearance came in 2021 with the Colts.

Davenport’s best analytic season came in 2020 when he earned an overall grade of 72.3 courtesy of Pro Football Focus. That same year, he posted an 87.6 pass blocking grade.

In 2021 with the Colts, Davenport earned a career-low 45.3 overall grade from PFF.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants waived linebacker Troy Brown with an injury designation. If he clears waivers, he will revert to the reserve/injured list.

Cardinals release 2 players ahead of final practice of minicamp

The Cardinals announced the release of offensive lineman Julien Davenport and safety Josh Thomas. Thomas appeared in two games last season.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a pair of roster moves before they took the field on Wednesday for their final practice of mandatory minicamp. They released offensive lineman Julien Davenport and safety Josh Thomas.

They did not announce any corresponding moves, so we can expect a pair of roster additions at some point.

Davenport was signed to the practice squad last November and then was re-signed to a futures deal after the season was over.

Thomas was signed to the practice squad last September and elevated to the active roster twice at the end of the year. He played 14 defensive snaps and 19 special teams snaps, collecting four total tackles.

Dolphins officially activate OT Julien Davenport

The Miami Dolphins have officially welcomed back offensive tackle Julien Davenport to the team’s active roster.

The Dolphins have spent much of the first two months of the season enduring losses to their roster on account of injury. Preston Williams, Xavien Howard, Danny Isidora — the losses have hit both sides of the football for the Dolphins. Don’t look now, but the pendulum has started two swing the other way and the Dolphins are actually getting an influx of talent back to the roster.

Whether that comes from the improving health of safety Reshad Jones or the activation of LB Andrew Van Ginkel and now OT Julien Davenport off the injured reserve, Miami’s roster has picked up some notable firepower for the team’s final run in 2019.

The Dolphins made the activation of Davenport official yesterday, activating him to the active roster and cutting offensive lineman Andrew Donnal to make room on the roster.

Davenport was one of the players involved in the Laremy Tunsil trade — and was supposed to serve as the Dolphins starting left tackle in Tunsil’s place. That lasted all of one game before injury struck, but now Davenport is positioning to work himself back into the lineup and try to convince the Dolphins that he can be a part of the long-term plan on an overhauled offensive line. Davenport, who is 24-years old, is a young, toolsy blocker. The improvement of other talents on Miami’s roster this season indicates that Davenport has legitimate hope for development and growth.

If that materializes, it will be because Davenport gets back on the field before the end of 2019 and shows improvement from start to finish. But at least now he’s going to get the chance now that he’s a part of the active roster.
