The Detroit Lions have a vacancy at their starting right guard position, and they currently have their fair share of linemen vying to take that role.

With the selection of Ohio State’ Jonah Jackson, that competition has gotten even more intense.

Jackson has lined up at left guard, center, and right guard throughout his college career, making him one of the more versatile linemen on the Lions roster. While the Lions have a hole open at right guard, they have been known to shake up the starting five, as they did with both Graham Glasgow and Frank Ragnow.

The drafting of Jackson may have offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell take a look at the entire interior offensive line and try to find the optimal position for each player.

As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of guys in the fight for a starting role. Joe Dahl was the starting left guard last season but will have to win that job again this year. Veterans Oday Aboushi and Kenny Wiggins, who both have multiple years of starting experience, will return to the Lions in hopes of making the first-team lineup. Former San Francisco first-round pick Joshua Garnett joins the team hoping for a fresh start and a chance to revive his career. Also in the fight is Russell Bodine, Beau Benzschawel, Caleb Benenoch, and Casey Tucker.

Ragnow’s job is safe, and he will likely return to play center, but he could go back to guard, a position he played during his rookie season. The Lions traded up to take Jackson, meaning that they want him to come in and contribute right away. While it’s unclear which guard spot he’ll take, his role seems well defined.

That leaves the remaining eight interior linemen to compete for the remaining spot on the line. Detroit usually keeps five interior linemen on their roster, so most of this group will be off the team come August.

Jonah Jackson’s arrival will force the Lions to rethink their offensive line situation. Regardless of where he lines up, one thing that is very clear is that he will be starting in Week 1.

Packers workout former 49ers first-round pick Joshua Garnett

The 28th overall pick in the 2016 draft, Garnett has played in just 22 games the last four seasons.

The Green Bay Packers had former first-round pick Joshua Garnett in town for an official workout on Tuesday, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Garnett, the 28th overall pick in the 2016 draft after a standout career at Stanford, was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 31 and hasn’t since latched on with another team.

Garnett played in only 22 games with 11 starts for the 49ers. He missed the entire 2017 season with a knee injury and was a backup for all of 2018.

Packers offensive line coach Adam Stenavich was the assistant offensive line coach in San Francisco in 2017 and 2018, so there’s a natural connection between player and coach in Green Bay.

Garnett entered the NFL with a reputation as a tough run blocker but with issues in pass protection. He battled Packers defensive lineman and former UCLA standout Kenny Clark several times at the collegiate level.

Broncos worked out 19 players, including QB Tyree Jackson

The Broncos worked out more than a dozen players this week, including former Buffalo quarterback Tyree Jackson.

We already knew that the Denver Broncos worked out former Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald on Tuesday. Thanks to NFL reporter Howard Balzer, we now know the names of 18 other players that worked out for the team.

In addition to Fitzgerald, Denver also worked out two other QBs: Taryn Christion and Tyree Jackson. Here’s the complete list of players that worked out for the Broncos, according to Balzer:

  • WR Tyre Brady
  • WR De’Mornay Pierson-El
  • WR DeAndrew Thompkins
  • WR Trevion Thompson
  • WR Alex Wesley
  • WR Papi White
  • QB Taryn Christion
  • QB Nick Fitzgerald
  • QB Tyree Jackson
  • TE Tyree Mayfield
  • OG Larry Allen
  • OG Joshua Garnett
  • OG Bunchy Stallings
  • OT Ka’John Armstrong
  • OT Brian Fineanganofo
  • RB Alex Barnes
  • RB Nick Brossette
  • RB Jeremy Cox
  • RB Matthew Dayes

Jackson (6-7, 249 pounds) is likely the most notable player on the list. He threw for 6,999 yards and 49 touchdowns during his three years at Buffalo and rushed for 757 yards and 16 more scores. Jackson signed with the Bills as a college free agent in April but failed to make their 53-man roster.

Related: Broncos worked out 16 players last week.

Jackson was selected by the DC Defenders in the XFL draft for the upcoming 2020 season but he would likely turn down a chance to start in the upstart league if he is invited to camp by an NFL team.

Jackson and the other players that worked out for the Broncos are likely being considered as “future contract” candidates. Players not on an active roster at the end of the season are eligible to sign future deals that become official when the new league year begins in March.

At the end of last season, Denver signed 10 players to future contracts.

Report: Texans work out former first-round OL Joshua Garnett

On Friday, the Houston Texans worked out free agent offensive guard Joshua Garnett, who was a first-round selection in 2016.

The Houston Texans continue to try-out former first-round selections. On Friday, the team worked out former first-round offensive lineman Joshua Garnett, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

The Texans did not immediately sign Garnett to a contract.

Garnett, 25, was a San Francisco 49ers first-round pick out of Stanford in 2016. The team selected him at No. 28 overall before starting him for 11 games as a right guard in his rookie season.

Injuries have hampered Garnett’s young career. He missed the entirety of his second season with a knee injury, followed by surgery. In the 2018 season-opener, he suffered a toe dislocation, causing him to miss six games. Later in the same season, he broke his thumb — ending his season.

San Francisco declined Garnett’s fifth-year option in the offseason. The 49ers released him on the cut-down day (Aug. 31, 2019). Since he has received little interest.

Currently, the Texans have three guards on the roster in Max Scharping, Zach Fulton and Greg Mancz.
