Former LSU player Jacoby Stevens joins coaching staff

A former LSU defender has joined the Tigers coaching staff.

LSU football began fall camp on Thursday and a familiar face was working with the defense. Former linebacker and safety [autotag]JaCoby Stevens[/autotag].

Stevens signed with LSU as a five-star athlete in 2017. He initially played offense, catching two passes his freshman year before moving to the defensive side, where he proved to be a versatile playmaker for defensive coordinator [autotag]Dave Aranda[/autotag].

Stevens racked up 21.5 tackles for loss in his LSU career with four interceptions and four fumble recoveries. He was a member of the 2019 national title team.

He played one year with the Philadelphia Eagles, appearing in three games and making one start.

Stevens’ versatility as a player should help him in the coaching ranks. This is a guy who played all over the defense in several schemes and also had a cup of tea on offense.

Stevens isn’t the only recent former player to be on staff. Last year, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] brought back former running back [autotag]Nick Brossette[/autotag] to serve as the Director of Alumni Relations and High School Outreach.

LSU’s best wins vs. Auburn: 2018

The 2018 season saw LSU travel to Auburn and defeat the Tigers 22-21 on a last second field goal for the second straight win in the series.

LSU entered its third game of the season on the road against the Auburn Tigers.

Both teams went into the game 2-0, and a win for either team would mark its first SEC win of the season.

Quarterback Joe Burrow finished the game 15-of-34 for 239 yards and one touchdown. Running back Nick Brossette had 19 carries for 69 yards to propel the Tigers offense to 370 total yards of offense.

Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham finished 16-of-28 for 198 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. His two picks thrown were the only two turnovers of the game between the two teams.

LSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and went up 10-0 in the second quarter before an Auburn touchdown trimmed the deficit to 10-7. Auburn then went up 14-10 before the half.

In the third quarter, Auburn struck first to extend the lead to 21-10. LSU responded to trim the lead to 21-13 entering the fourth quarter.

LSU scored twice in the final quarter of play to get the 22-21 victory. Burrow hit receiving target Derrick Dillon on a 71-yard touchdown pass to put LSU down 21-19. Kicker Cole Tracy booted a 42-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Tigers to the win.

The victory moved LSU to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the SEC. The Tigers would go on to finish the season 10-3 after a Fiesta Bowl victory over UCF.

Defeating Auburn for the second straight season helped pave the way for the Tigers to finish the regular season with nine wins before earning the New Year’s Six Bowl against the Knights.

LSU’s best wins vs. Mississippi State: 2018 season

The 2018 LSU-Mississippi State game saw the Tigers come away with a 19-3 victory and add another win to their eventual 10-3 2018 season.

The 74th installment of the LSU-Mississippi State football rivalry saw the Tigers defeat the Bulldogs 19-3 on October 20, 2018 in Tiger Stadium.

LSU’s defense held Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald to 59 yards as he completed just 8-of-24 attempts. The Tigers defense had four interceptions in the win.

Joe Burrow passed for 129 yards and an interception, but went 16-of-28 in the pocket.

Tigers running back Nick Brossette had 57 rushing yards on 17 carries with one score. The rushing touchdown came after LSU linebacker Michael Divinity intercepted a pass by Fitzgerald.

Mississippi State did outplay LSU in yardage, as the Bulldogs had 260 total yards of offense to the Tigers’ 239. But, the LSU defense continued to roll and cause mismatches for the Mississippi State receivers.

State had four turnovers in the loss but accounted for 15 first downs.

This win was meaningful for the Tigers as they continued to win the must-win SEC games that led to the Fiesta Bowl berth against UCF during bowl season.

The victory also marked a two-game winning streak in the series for LSU, and was the first win against the Bulldogs for second-year head coach Ed Orgeron.

The Tigers would end the 2018 season with a 10-3 record following an eight point victory over UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. Mississippi State finished their 2018 campaign with an 8-5 record, including a 4-4 record in SEC play.

The Bulldogs’ season ended with a loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Outback Bowl.

For LSU, this win capped off a two-game winning streak after they defeated the Georgia Bulldogs the week before.

Following the victory, LSU moved to 7-1 for the 2018 season, while the Bulldogs fell to 4-3.

Seahawks could add depth at RB following Rashaad Penny’s injury

The Seattle Seahawks brought three running backs in for a tryout, looking for depth following the injury to Rashaad Penny.

The Seattle Seahawks are always on the hunt for ways to make their roster better, and the loss of Rashaad Penny has them exploring the free agent market for more depth at running back with three games left in the regular season.

The Seahawks reportedly brought three running backs – Nick Brossette, Matthew Dayes, and Xavier Turner – to tryout on Tuesday.

None of those players figure to be candidates for the active roster, but could be options for Seattle’s practice squad – which does not currently have any running backs.

Turner spent part of the offseason with the Seahawks, appearing in all four preseason games and rushing for 71 yards on 17 carries.

Daye was a seventh round pick by the Browns in 2017. He appeared in all 16 games his rookie season, but only carried the ball five times and had four receptions – being used primarily as a special teamer.

He was with the 49ers for seven games in 2018 but ended up in New Orleans before getting released off the injured reserve in September.

Brossette was an undrafted free agent out of LSU this year, catching on first with the Patriots and eventually with the Lions.

For now, the Seahawks will turn to veteran C.J. Prosise and rookie Travis Homer to handle running back duties behind Chris Carson.

There are other options on the free agent market, including former Seahawk Thomas Rawls and Lavon Coleman – who is currently rostered by the Seattle Dragons of the XFL.

Broncos worked out 19 players, including QB Tyree Jackson

The Broncos worked out more than a dozen players this week, including former Buffalo quarterback Tyree Jackson.

We already knew that the Denver Broncos worked out former Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald on Tuesday. Thanks to NFL reporter Howard Balzer, we now know the names of 18 other players that worked out for the team.

In addition to Fitzgerald, Denver also worked out two other QBs: Taryn Christion and Tyree Jackson. Here’s the complete list of players that worked out for the Broncos, according to Balzer:

  • WR Tyre Brady
  • WR De’Mornay Pierson-El
  • WR DeAndrew Thompkins
  • WR Trevion Thompson
  • WR Alex Wesley
  • WR Papi White
  • QB Taryn Christion
  • QB Nick Fitzgerald
  • QB Tyree Jackson
  • TE Tyree Mayfield
  • OG Larry Allen
  • OG Joshua Garnett
  • OG Bunchy Stallings
  • OT Ka’John Armstrong
  • OT Brian Fineanganofo
  • RB Alex Barnes
  • RB Nick Brossette
  • RB Jeremy Cox
  • RB Matthew Dayes

Jackson (6-7, 249 pounds) is likely the most notable player on the list. He threw for 6,999 yards and 49 touchdowns during his three years at Buffalo and rushed for 757 yards and 16 more scores. Jackson signed with the Bills as a college free agent in April but failed to make their 53-man roster.

Related: Broncos worked out 16 players last week.

Jackson was selected by the DC Defenders in the XFL draft for the upcoming 2020 season but he would likely turn down a chance to start in the upstart league if he is invited to camp by an NFL team.

Jackson and the other players that worked out for the Broncos are likely being considered as “future contract” candidates. Players not on an active roster at the end of the season are eligible to sign future deals that become official when the new league year begins in March.

At the end of last season, Denver signed 10 players to future contracts.
