Joshua Christopher commits to Arizona State

The Wolverines miss out on a top target in the 2020 class long thought to be a lock to Michigan.

At long last, perhaps Michigan’s biggest target in 2020 has made his decision.

For quite some time, Bellflower (CA) Mayfair five-star shooting guard Joshua Christopher has had 11 247Sports Crystal Balls predicting him to become a Wolverine. But public skepticism grew considerably, as those prognostications didn’t equate to action, as he remained uncommitted.

It turned out, that was warranted.

Christopher released multiple Top 5s in the meantime, mostly consistent with one another, with Michigan, Arizona State, Missouri and UCLA being in both, while Kentucky was replaced by USC in his most recent.

But it was revealed last week that the five-star, rated No. 7 overall by 247Sports, regardless of position, would be announcing his decision on Monday, and he finally did, hours after speculation, not choosing Michigan, but pledging to Arizona State.

It’s a huge blow to Michigan, but given that it already has five 2020 commitments, including five-star Isaiah Todd, and four-stars Zeb Jackson, Hunter Dickinson and Terrance Williams, along with transfer Mike Smith, it will be just fine.

Michigan fans have been waiting with bated breath for what 2020 Bellflower (CA) Mayfair five-star shooting guard Joshua Christopher is going to do as far as his recruitment is concerned.

Juwan Howard and the Wolverines have made a strong push, and it’s been evident. The No. 7 recruit in the country, regardless of position according to 247Sports, went from having a handful of of 247Sports Crystal Balls indicating Michigan could be the choice. But now there’s solidarity, as all 11 votes indicate he’ll end up in the maize and blue.

While Christopher took to Twitter to post several edits featuring him at his different prospects — Michigan, UCLA. Arizona State and Mizzou — he finally insinuated that the time is drawing near for his college choice.

There’s a growing feeling among those in the know that Christopher could end up in the fold. Now we just have to wait and see if the predictions become prescient.

Just about a week ago, Michigan started trending on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for 2020 Bellflower (CA) Mayfair five-star shooting guard Joshua Christopher, when two of the experts from The Michigan Insider input their selections for the Wolverines.

At the time, that made Michigan 50-50 with nearby UCLA still holding its own. That number started growing when more 247Sports Crystal Balls came in for Christopher, including from Steve Lorenz.

A week later, the Bruins don’t even look to be in the picture, as all 11 predictions now have Christopher heading to Ann Arbor.

That said, it looks like Michigan very well could be pulling in its second five-star in the 2020 class in Juwan Howard’s first year as head coach.

Michigan is also in the running for yet another five-star, in Austin (TX) Vandegrift powerf forward Greg Brown, who visited Ann Arbor just over a week ago, for the win over Michigan State.

The Wolverines will need some attrition, however, even with where the class already stands, as Zeb Jackson, Terrance Williams, Jace Howard, Isaiah Todd and Hunter Dickinson are already committed to join the maize and blue in 2020.

As for Christopher, it’s now looking more like when rather than if. The matter will come down to just when exactly he decides to pull the trigger.

Along with UCLA and Michigan, Christopher is also considering Arizona State and Mizzou.

Michigan now trending for 2020 five-star

The Wolverines officially look like the team to beat.

Just days ago, Michigan basketball was looking good for one of its top targets, but the 247Sports Crystal Ball said otherwise.

2020 Lakewood (CA) Mayfair five-star shooting guard Joshua Christopher is a player maize and blue fans have had their eye on since the Wolverines came of interest to him recently. When 247Sports director of basketball scouting Jerry Meyer put in a prediction that Christopher would end up a Wolverine, suddenly, what went from looking like a pipe dream started to look possible, maybe even plausible. [lawrence-related id=20967,20957]

Then, just two days ago, The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb — who visited Christopher — and Josh Henschke, who indicated he had another source, both put crystal balls in for the 7th-rated player in the country, regardless of position. Since, more prediction a have rolled in in favor of the maize and blue.

Michigan was tied with UCLA with 50% of the predictions just two days ago. Now, with three more coming in for the Wolverines, it’s starting to look inevitable that Christopher will end up in Ann Arbor.

Will he though? Certainly weirder things have happened in recruiting.

One thing that’s not weird? Juwan Howard can flat-out recruit.

Michigan already has one five-star in the fold for 2020, with Isaiah Todd pledging to the maize and blue last fall. But are the Wolverines in line for another?

It’s starting to look that way, with Michigan seemingly trending for Lakewood (CA) Mayfair five-star Joshua Christopher, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound shooting guard in the 2020 class.

While UCLA did have a seeming advantage for their in-state product, eyes turned towards Juwan Howard and the Wolverines as of Jan. 8, when 247Sports director of basketball scouting Jerry Meyer put in his prediction for Christopher to end up in Ann Arbor. That’s only gained steam, with perhaps some more enticing 247Sports Crystal Balls coming in on Tuesday.

Christopher’s 247Sports Crystal Ball went from a decided UCLA advantage to all-tied up with four a piece for both the Bruins and the Wolverines, as The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb and Josh Henschke both putting their predictions in that Christopher would end up in Ann Arbor. Both local prognosticators are 100% in their Crystal Ball predictions.

And, Henschke also noted, his intel comes from a different place than Webb’s.

With Todd, Zeb Jackson, Hunter Dickinson, Terrance Williams and Jace Howard all in the fold, Michigan is looking at potentially bringing in a special class in Juwan Howard’s first full year. Getting a player of Christopher’s caliber could put it over the top.
