Notre Dame updates its depth chart ahead of College Football Playoff vs. Penn State

Notre Dame has released the depth chart for the Penn State matchup, and it looks good for the health of certain players.

Notre Dame has released the updated depth chart for when the Irish take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Orange Bowl in Miami.

What jumps out is running back [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] is listed atop the RB spot, suggesting he is likely to play despite getting banged up in the 23-10 win over Georgia.

[autotag]Rocco Spindler[/autotag] sits atop the right guard spot, so he should be back in action after dealing with a right ankle injury.

On defense, [autotag]Xavier Watts[/autotag] is atop the safety spot. He left the field briefly against Georgia but appears to be OK. Meanwhile, linebacker [autotag]Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa[/autotag] is back on the depth chart as a reserve. [autotag]Junior Tuihalamaka[/autotag] continues to back up [autotag]Joshua Burnham[/autotag] at the vyper pass-rusher position.

Notre Dame football releases depth chart ahead of Georgia matchup

Notre Dame’s depth chart for Georgia brings few surprises.

The No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish depth chart for the Allstate Sugar Bowl matchup against the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs is out.

The biggest name that’s not on it is [autotag]Rylie Mills[/autotag] — the defensive end is out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury suffered against Indiana in Notre Dame’s 27-17 win over the Hoosiers.

It appears [autotag]RJ Oben[/autotag] and [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] will replace Mills with [autotag]Joshua Burnham[/autotag], who also plays the Vyper pass-rush position, in the work.

Otherwise, there are few surprises on the depth chart. It’s nice to see [autotag]Howard Cross III[/autotag] back at the top for defensive tackle now that he’s returned from an injury of his own.

One notable absence is offensive lineman [autotag]Charles Jagusah[/autotag]. While indications were that he was ready to return from injury, he’s not listed on the chart. We’ll have to keep an eye on his availability against Georgia.

Is Loghan Thomas playing today? Injury updates for Notre Dame defensive lineman

Notre Dame defensive lineman Loghan Thomas is dealing with a right hamstring injury. Here are the latest updates.

Defensive lineman [autotag]Loghan Thomas[/autotag] is out for the No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish tonight against the Florida State Seminoles.

The freshman is sidelined with a right hamstring injury.

Notre Dame has listed all other student-athletes on the two-deep roster as available. That makes us wonder if kicker [autotag]Mitch Jeter[/autotag] is finally ready to play as he deals with a hip injury.

The Fighting Irish also return freshman cornerback Tae Johnson as the backup to [autotag]Leonard Moore[/autotag]. [autotag]Karon Hobbs[/autotag], who was in that spot last week, is now the backup nickel corner to [autotag]Jordan Clark[/autotag].

Otherwise, the Irish are getting healthier, though key players such as [autotag]Jordan Botelho[/autotag] are out for the season.

Notre Dame injury update

Notre Dame will be without Loghan Thomas this week, and [autotag]Jason Onye[/autotag] remains out for personal reasons.

How long will Loghan Thomas be out?

It is unclear how long Thomas will be out beyond this week.

Notre Dame defensive lineman depth chart

Thomas’ loss will be felt, but the Irish still have a deep defensive line. Thomas was already listed at third on the depth chart for the Vyper pass-rushing position behind [autotag]Joshua Burnham[/autotag] and [autotag]Junior Tuihalamaka[/autotag].

Joshua Burnham gave Marcus Freeman a short answer on his availability for Stanford

Freeman got the message

Notre Dame football defensive end [autotag]Joshua Burnham[/autotag] had played just one game heading into Saturday’s contest against Stanford.

There was questions about his availability, but when Marcus Freeman ask him if he wanted to go, he said “there is now way I’m not going to play,” as the Irish head coach explained to the media following the victory.

It as a choice that made plenty of sense in hindsight, as Burnham had a massive game for Notre Dame. Not only did he account for 5 tackles and a tackle-for-loss, the junior from Michigan tipped a pitch, caught it and raced down the sidelines 15-yards for a fumble recovery.

Burnham’s return gives the Irish some much needed depth on the defensive line, as they have already lost Jordan Botelho and Boubacar Traore to season-ending injuries. Hopefully his ankle recovers quickly following his impressive performance, and we will see him back on the field making big plays against Georgia Tech next weekend.

Marcus Freeman updates injuries to Jordan Botelho, Ashton Craig, Billy Schrauth and more

Not great news for a few Irish starters

On Monday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman had bad news about all of the players that suffered injuries against Purdue.

Defensive lineman [autotag]Jordan Botelho[/autotag] and offensive lineman [autotag]Ashton Craig[/autotag] are lost for the year due to knee injuries. It was reported earlier that Botelho most likely would be out for the remainder of the season, which unfortunately turned out to be correct.

There was some good injury news as well, as wide receiver [autotag]Jordan Faison[/autotag] will be full go this weekend. Defensive lineman [autotag]Joshua Burnham[/autotag] is questionable, and offensive lineman [autotag]Billy Schrauth[/autotag], the third player hurt against the Boilermakers, is expected to miss a few weeks.

Notre Dame offensive lineman Ashton Craig participates in a drill during a Notre Dame football practice at Irish Athletic Center on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, in South Bend.

It wasn’t the news we wanted to hear, but it was somewhat expected. The Irish have had to battle on the field this year, along with in the training room.

Notre Dame D-lineman Joshua Burnham out with ankle injury vs. Purdue

Tough break for him.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Notre Dame’s offense hasn’t lived up to expectations, but the defense mostly has held up its end of the bargain. It would help to not give up big plays though, and the unit has been prone to them at times. Having as many available players as possible will go a long way with that.

The Irish’s defense took a hit shortly before it was set to take the field against Purdue. Junior defensive end [autotag]Joshua Burnham[/autotag] will miss the game with an ankle injury. The good news is there are no other pregame injuries to report:

Burnham previously was listed behind [autotag]RJ Oben[/autotag] on the depth chart at defensive end. That spot now will be occupied by freshman [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag].

Burnham played in both of the Irish’s previous games. While he was kept off the stats sheet at Texas A&M, he was credited with four tackles and one tackle for loss against Northern Illinois.

Notre Dame statistical leaders through five games

Who can get the Irish back on track after their heartbreaking loss?

Notre Dame doesn’t have time to think about what could have been against Ohio State. Its focus now must shift to a resurgent Duke team. Wins continue to be necessary because you never know what can happen over the next two months. The College Football Playoff might still remain in play.

Here are the Irish’s statistical leaders to watch for against the Blue Devils:
