The Colorado Buffaloes have been hit by the transfer portal this offseason, most notably by losing two starters in Lawson Lovering and Nique Clifford.
In addition to them, reserve Quincy Allen put his name in the portal as well, leaving spots for the program to fill ahead of the 2023-2024 season. Colorado did add TCU transfer center Eddie Lampkin Jr. on Sunday, but head coach Tad Boyle is likely looking to add more.
There is one rather off-the-radar player available that could be worth a look for the Buffs: Joel Scott. One of the top players in NCAA Division II over the past two seasons at Black Hills State University in South Dakota, Scott, the younger brother of former CU Buffs forward Josh Scott, entered the transfer portal on Monday following a senior season in which he put up 23 points and 9.6 rebounds per game to earn D2CAA South Central Player of the Year honors.
That came after a junior season in which he averaged a double-double with 23.1 points and 10.6 boards per contest. Those two seasons coincided with back-to-back Final Four runs for the Yellow Jackets.
As for how Scott plays, the 6-foot-8, 225-pound Colorado Springs native has primarily been a face-up power forward and is a good stretch-four threat, shooting 40% from deep this past season. That said, he has shown the ability to play well in the post and is a good passer despite low assist numbers.
Scott, who has one year of eligibility remaining, is a serviceable defender, too, but offense is where he primarily impacts the game.
The Buffs have a recent track record of going to the Division II ranks, as former guard Derrick White transferred in from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and became a key two-way player for the Buffs and a first-round NBA draft pick. I’m not saying all that is destined to happen for Scott, but he has shown the ability to be a high-impact player and one who should be able to compete at the Division I level.
A timeline for his eventual decision is uncertain, but he’s someone to keep an eye on over the next few weeks or so.
