Former Cardinals OL Josh Miles signs with Falcons

Miles appeared in 17 games for the Cardinals in four seasons after he was drafted in the seventh round in 2019. He now signs with the Falcons.

A former Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman has found another team. The latest is offensive lineman Josh Miles. The Atlanta Falcons announced they signed him to a one-year contract on Friday.

Miles was drafted in the seventh round in 2019 by the Cardinals out of Morgan State. He spent three full seasons with the team, appearing in 17 games.

Last season, he was waived with an injury designation before the start of the season and reverted to injured reserve.

He now joins the Falcons.

Falcons sign free-agent OL Josh Miles to one-year deal

The #Falcons have signed free-agent offensive lineman Josh Miles to a one-year deal

The Atlanta Falcons have added another free agent, signing offensive tackle Josh Miles to a one-year deal on Friday. Miles, 27, has served as a backup since being drafted in the seventh round by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019.

While he’s yet to record an NFL start, Miles has appeared in 17 games over his four seasons in the league. The Falcons have yet to re-sign left guard Elijah Wilkinson, but they signed offensive lineman Germain Ifedi last week.

Atlanta brought back right tackle Kaleb McGary on a three-year deal, and gave right guard Chris Lindstrom a five-year extension. Miles will likely continue to serve as a backup for the Falcons, but the team has yet to declare who the starting left guard will be.

The Falcons signed defensive end Calais Campbell and wide receiver Scotty Miller last week. Both players should start for the team in 2023. Use our free agency tracker to recap each signing and make sure to check out our updated starting lineup projection.

Potential trade candidates for Cardinals before final cuts

As final cuts come next week, the Cardinals could move these players and get compensation.

The Arizona Cardinals have one final preseason game this weekend on Saturday against the Tennessee Titans and then must make final cuts by Tuesday afternoon. They must get the roster down to 53 players.

While most of the roster moves they will make will be cuts, a few players who won’t make the roster could be traded.

A few players have some trade value, even if it ends up being just a Day 3 draft pick next year. Who are those guys? below we name a few.

Cardinals to get long look at Josh Jones, Josh Miles in preseason action

The Cardinals will let both block one-on-one on an island in the preseason to see who will be the team’s backup swing tackle in 2022.

The Arizona Cardinals’ starting offensive line is basically set. D.J. Humphries will start at left tackle, Justin Pugh will be at left guard, Rodney Hudson is the starting center, Will Hernandez appears to be locked in at right guard and Kelvin Beachum is the guy at right tackle.

What is undetermined is who will be the primary backup swing tackle in 2022. It is a battle between third-year pro Josh Jones and fourth-year tackle Josh Miles, according to offensive line coach and run-game coordinator Sean Kugler, who spoke to reporters after Saturday’s practice.

“Both those guys are doing a good job,” Kugler said.

He will get many opportunities to evaluate them both in the preseason.

With Humphries and Beachum being older players now, Jones and Miles “are probably going to get most of the preseason work,” and it will be a test.

They are going to let both play “out there on an island by themselves,” so coaches can see how they handle one-on-one matchups.

Kugler said that Jones is a future starter at tackle for the Cardinals and could start this year, although Humphries and Beachum are locked in there.

“If your third tackle is capable of starting, you’ve got a good tackle,” he said.

“Josh Miles is trying to work his way into that mix, too,” Kugler added. “He’s a guy that was a late-round pick that his development has been slower but he’s really taken strides.”

Jones has been working at left tackle in camp. When Humphries was out early, Miles was playing left tackle with the second team. With Humphries’ return to practice, Jones has been at left tackle on the second-team line and Miles at right tackle.

The Cardinals’ preseason opener is Friday night on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Cardinals ‘working through’ options at LT with D.J. Humphries’ absence

With D.J. Humphries out this weekend on the COVID list, the Cardinals will either have Kelvin Beachum, Josh Jones or Josh Miles at left tackle.

The Arizona Cardinals have to make a late-week adjustment at left tackle in Week 17. Left tackle D.J. Humphries landed on the COVID list Thursday, meaning he will miss the game on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cardinals have options to work with at left tackle but head coach Kliff Kingsbury did not have a definitive answer as to what the plan was for left tackle.

“We’re working through it,” he said on Friday.

They could go with right tackle Kelvin Beachum, who was basically exclusively a left tackle until last season when he signed with the team. They have backup Josh Miles and second-year pro Josh Jones, who played left tackle in college, was drafted to play right tackle and has seen time at guard this year.

“It’ll be a combination of one of those three guys, maybe multiple,” he said.

If Beachum is moved to left tackle, Jones likely would play right tackle. That would cause the most movement on the line.

If Jones or Miles start at left tackle, then only one position is changed, rather than two.

Of course, whoever fills in will have a challenge. The Cowboys have a fearsome trio of edge rushers this season with rookie Micah Parsons and veterans DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory.

Parsons has 13 sacks, Gregory has six and Lawrence has two.

Cardinals whose stock rose and fell in preseason opener

These players either helped or hurt their cases to make the final roster.

The Arizona Cardinals got their first action of the preseason Friday night and many young players got their first extended action since entering the NFL, as there was no preseason in 2020.

The Cardinals defeated the Dallas Cowboys 19-16 at State Farm Stadium Friday night, thanks to two Matt Prater field goals in the final two minutes, including a 47-yard kick as time expired.

But the preseason is more about individual performances than the team results, especially for those players battling for a spot on the final 53-man roster.

Below are some players whose stock rose and fell based on their performance Friday night.
