Cardinals add CB Josh Jackson on waiver claim

He was released by the Steelers over the weekend after appearing in four games. He was with the Cardinals in the preseason and training camp.

Cornerback Josh Jackson has returned to the Arizona Cardinals. Jackson, who was waived over the weekend by the Pittsburgh Steelers, was claimed by Arizona.

He spent time with the Cardinals in the preseason before being released this year.

While with the Steelers, Jackson appeared in four games, starting once.

He had six tackles and a fumble recovery in 85 defensive snaps.

Jackson was drafted in the second round in 2018 by the Green Bay Packers. He spent three seasons playing for Green Bay, then played two games last season for the Chiefs and then the Steelers this year.

Cornerback Marco Wilson is day-to-day after suffering an injury on Sunday.

To make room for Jackson on the roster, the team placed long snapper Aaron Brewer (pectoral) on injured reserve.

Cardinals release CB Josh Jackson, 2 others on eve of final cut deadline

The Cardinals released CB Josh Jackson, LB Joe Walker and OL Koda Martin.

The Arizona Cardinals have begun the process of cutting down their roster down to 53 players. They announced three player cuts Monday.

They released cornerback Josh Jackson, linebacker Joe Walker and Koda Martin.

Walker was on his third stint with the team. Jackson was signed during the spring. Martin had been on the Cardinals’ practice squad the last two seasons.

The release of Walker and Martin are no surprise. There simply was no room on the roster at their positions. The release of Jackson is somewhat more surprising, as the cornerback room is lacking in experience and bodies.

The Cardinals must move another 25 players via release, injured reserve or trade by Tuesday’s 1 p.m. Arizona time deadline.

POLL: Who will win Cardinals’ No. 3 CB job?

Right now, it is a battle between Antonio Hamilton, Josh Jackson, Breon Borders and young players. Who do you think will win the job?

The Arizona Cardinals will open training camp in a little more than a week and the position battles will begin. A few spots in the playing rotation are legitimately up for grabs. One is at cornerback.

Byron Murphy and Marco Wilson are the Cardinals’ top two guys but their third cornerback to play in their nickel package is not certain.

The three most likely guys to win the job are Antonio Hamilton, Breon Borders and Josh Jackson.

Hamilton played pretty well in limited action last season when called upon to fill in when players were injured. He is more of a special teams player but can fill in playing in the slot. If he plays, it means Byron Murphy would stay on the boundary full-time.

Jackson was signed by the Cardinals during minicamp. He has experience starting outside for the Packers and enters his fifth NFL season. He played only nine defensive snaps for the Chiefs last season.

Borders played one game for the Cardinals last season and struggled. He has bounced around the league and has a handful of starts in his career.

The rest of the guys on the roster are young. Seventh-round pick Christian Matthew is in the mix but played at a small school at Valdosta State. Darrell Baker is an undrafted rookie. Nate Brooks spent last season on the practice squad after being an undrafted rookie. Jace Whittaker has played mostly special teams in two seasons with the Cardinals, bouncing back and forth from the roster to the practice squad.

Who do you think will win the battle? Will they sign another player like Robert Alford to return and play?

Vote in the poll and give your thoughts in the comments below the article.

Cardinals signed two former Chiefs following mandatory minicamp tryouts

Former #Chiefs LB Ben Niemann and CB Josh Jackson have landed with #Cardinals after tryouts during their mandatory minicamp.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwa53mtds520q2 player_id=none image=https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

A pair of former Kansas City Chiefs players have landed on the Arizona Cardinals’ 90-man offseason roster. LB Ben Niemann and CB Josh Jackson were signed by the Cardinals after completing successful tryouts during their mandatory minicamp this past week.

Niemann joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL draft. He made the 53-man roster outright and would go on to spend the next four seasons in Kansas City as a special teamer and sub-package linebacker. He started 12 games and appeared in 62 during his time with the Chiefs, recording 167 total tackles, one forced fumble, five fumble recoveries, two passes defended and two sacks.

Jackson was signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad in late October last season. The 25-year-old cornerback was a standard elevation to the Chiefs’ 53-man roster in Week 14 and Week 16 last season, recording four total tackles with the majority of his snaps being played on special teams. K.C. released Jackson from the practice squad in January.

Niemann has the best shot at making the Cardinals’ 53-man roster. He’s expected to compete with players like Tanner Vallejo and Joe Walker for a roster spot and his special teams prowess could give him the edge he needs to make it. Unfortunately, we’re well past the deadline for Kansas City to earn any sort of compensatory pick for Niemann, even if he makes the roster and plays a lot of snaps for the Cardinals.

Cardinals sign CB Josh Jackson, LB Ben Niemann

The Cardinals addressed the depth at linebacker and a cornerback after minicamp.

The Arizona Cardinals made a pair of moves after the conclusion of mandatory minicamp to add depth to the roster. They announced the signing of former Green Bay Packers cornerback Josh Jackson and former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Ben Niemann.

Jackson is 6-0 and 196 lbs and was drafted in the second round in 2018 by the Packers.

He spent three seasons there and appeared in 44 games, starting 15. He was traded to the New York Giants in August of last year and then, after not appearing in a single game for the Giants, was released in October. He went on to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs on their practice squad. He appeared in two games for the Chiefs.

The Cardinals could use some depth at cornerback, as they lost Jeff Gladney, signed this offseason in free agency, to a car accident that tragically killed him. Gladney was slated to take over the role that Robert Alford held as their third cornerback.

Niemann (6-2, 233) spent the last four seasons with the Chiefs after making the team as an undrafted rookie out of Iowa. He has appeared in 62 games in four seasons, starting 12. He has 167 career tackles and 2 career sacks. He played 50% of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps last season and at least 59% of the team’s special teams snaps every year he has been in the league.

He presumably will battle with Tanner Vallejo and Joe Walker for a role on the roster.

Jackson’s signing made the NFL transaction report, which came with the release of safety Javon Hagan.

Niemann’s signing was not on the transaction report but there will be a corresponding roster move made tomorrow.

Former Hawkeye and current NFL safety Micah Hyde calls Iowa a ‘cheat code’ to the NFL

Former Iowa Hawkeye and current Buffalo Bills safety Micah Hyde said that “going to Iowa was a cheat code” to the NFL.

The Iowa Hawkeyes just received some of the highest praise possible from one of their own currently starting in the NFL. While on the Pat McAfee Show, Buffalo Bills safety [autotag]Micah Hyde[/autotag] was asked about what Iowa did to prepare him to get to the NFL. His answer was clear cut.

“Iowa is an NFL program fresh out of high school. You come in your freshman year with Coach Ferentz and I had Coach Parker as my position coach back then so I saw him all day every day. They get you ready for the NFL,” Hyde said to McAfee.

What Hyde says is no exaggeration. Iowa is becoming one of the premier schools that is continuously sending defensive backs to the NFL that are not only latching onto a team but becoming contributors. Right now, there are 10 former Iowa Hawkeyes safeties or cornerbacks calling NFL teams home.

Dane Belton, Jake Gervase, Matt Hankins, Amani Hooker, Micah Hyde, Desmond King II, Jack Koerner, Greg Mabin, Michael Ojemudia, and Geno Stone are all products of the Hawkeyes’ program.

That is just the list of former Iowa players roaming NFL secondaries. Overall, Iowa has 48 players currently in the NFL. That is good enough for the ninth-most players in the NFL from all colleges.

Hyde went on to provide the best recruiting pitch of all later on in the interview. His statement resonates and the reaction of the show members tell you everything about just how powerful what he said was.

“Going to Iowa was definitely a cheat code and that’s why they produce so many NFL players because Coach Ferentz gets you ready,” Hyde said.

The players in the NFL speak for itself. Their production at Iowa last year speaks for itself as the Hawkeyes led the nation in interceptions with 25. The NFL bloodline is likely to continue with returning All-American [autotag]Riley Moss[/autotag] looking to become the next Hawkeye to make the jump. The recruiting is showing as Iowa landed five-star safety recruit [autotag]Xavier Nwankpa[/autotag].

The Iowa Hawkeyes continue to grow their reputation for development. They are now seeing that development turn into consistently winning on the field, a high-powered recruiting tool, and evidence that they will give their guys the best chance to make it to the NFL.

Chiefs release 4 players from practice squad

The #Chiefs released four players from the practice squad on Tuesday. What does it mean? Info here:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwa53mtds520q2 player_id=none image=https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Kansas City Chiefs are shaking up some things on the practice squad ahead of the divisional round of the playoffs.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice from Tuesday, the Chiefs have terminated the practice squad contracts of four players. That group includes TE Nakia Griffin-Stewart, DE/LB Shilique Calhoun, DB Josh Jackson and LB Elijah Sullivan. Griffin-Stewart and Jackson have both appeared in games for Kansas City this season.

It’s not uncommon for this to happen this time of year. On Monday, practice squad contracts expired for teams who have been eliminated from playoff contention. When practice squad contracts expired in 2020, the Chiefs snagged Austin Edwards from the Falcons and Prince Tega Wanogho from the Eagles. Fans should expect that they intend to make some similar types of additions with these new vacancies.

A number of the players released from practice squad contracts who are free to sign with other teams includes some veteran players. Adrian Peterson, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Brian Poole, Willie Snead and D.J. Hayden are among the most notable names. There are also some former Chiefs out there like Deon Yelder, Adrian Colbert, Tedric Thompson, Anthony Gordon, Bradley McDougald and Daniel Brown.

This also might not be the end for each of Griffin-Stewart, Calhoun, Jackson and Sullivan with Kansas City. Expect most of those players, if not all, to return on reserve/future contracts themselves.

Chiefs announce trio of roster moves on Saturday

The #Chiefs have placed CB Chris Lammons on injured reserve, also elevating two players via standard elevation for Sunday’s game against the #Raiders.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a trio of roster moves on Saturday ahead of their Week 14 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders, and all over those roster moves come in the defensive secondary.

After suffering a high ankle sprain against the Denver Broncos in Week 13, the Chiefs have placed special teams ace Chris Lammons on injured reserve. He’s required to miss three games before the team can designate him to return from injury, so the earliest he could return is the Week 17 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

With Lammons set to miss the game, plus the questionable game statuses for both Rashad Fenton and L’Jarius Sneed, the Chiefs have called in some reinforcement from the practice squad.

Both Dicaprio Bootle and Josh Jackson have been elevated to the 53-man roster via standard elevation. This is Bootle’s second time being called up this season. While he only played on special teams the last time he played, he could very well be the Chiefs’ starter at the nickel corner spot in Week 14. Jackson would be a likely candidate to fill in for Lammons on special teams and in case of an emergency on defense.

Sneed’s likely absence due to a family tragedy potentially leaves the team very thin at the slot position. Fenton would slide in when healthy, but he’s not guaranteed to play after being limited in practice each day this week. Mike Hughes is an option, but after taking over a bigger role on special teams in recent weeks, he could be limited to minimal snaps on defense. We could even see Tyrann Mathieu play some slot corner this week as a result of the absences.

Week 14 is gearing up to be a test for some of the young players in the Kansas City secondary. They’ve been a strength in recent weeks, but this type of attrition could put the team in a bind.

Chiefs protect a single practice squad player for Week 14

The #Chiefs protected a single player on the practice squad ahead of their Week 14 tilt with the #Raiders.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwa53mtds520q2 player_id=none image=https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Kansas City Chiefs have protected a single practice squad player ahead of their Week 14 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to the NFL’s official personnel notice on Tuesday, the Chiefs protected practice squad CB Josh Jackson. As a result, no team will be able to sign Jackson away from the Kansas City practice squad this week. This is the first time the team has protected Jackson since signing him to the practice squad back in late October.

Jackson is a former second-round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2018. He spent three seasons in Green Bay, recording 81 combined tackles, 12 passes defended, two fumble recoveries during that span. In August, the Packers traded Jackson to the New York Giants, who released him before he even played a snap for the team.

The Chiefs are currently dealing with some injuries at the CB spot. Special teams ace Chris Lammons hurt his ankle during the Week 13 game against the Denver Broncos, and we await news on his status for the practice week. Rashad Fenton is dealing with a knee strain that already kept him out of one game.

There’s also the possibility that Kansas City opted to protect Jackson given some injuries around the league. The Baltimore Ravens lost star CB Marlon Humphrey for the season with a torn pectoral muscle and they could be on the prowl to add a corner.

Typically, practice squad protections have signaled that the Chiefs have intentions to use a standard elevation on a player or sign them to the 53-man roster. We’ll keep you posted later this week when the team makes their transactions ahead of the Week 14 game against the Raiders.

Chiefs sign former Packers CB Josh Jackson to practice squad

The Chiefs signed former Packers draft pick Josh Jackson to the team’s practice squad on Friday.

A former member of the Green Bay Packers secondary is joining the Kansas City Chiefs just nine days before Matt LaFleur’s team travels to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs.

Cornerback Josh Jackson signed to the Chiefs practice squad on Friday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Jackson, a second-round pick of the Packers in 2018, was traded to the New York Giants in exchange for Isaac Yiadom in August. He was waived by the Giants earlier this week.

Jackson spent almost of training camp with the Packers and would have at least some level of knowledge on the inner workings of Green Bay’s secondary and defensive scheme, potentially creating extra prep work for defensive coordinator Joe Barry and defensive backs coach Jerry Gray this week.

The eventual value is probably overrated, but it is possible Jackson could provide insight on the Packers for Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.

Jackson didn’t play a single snap for the Giants.

The Chiefs had a chance to take Jackson in the 2018 draft. Kansas City traded up to No. 46 overall but ended up selecting Breeland Speaks two picks before the Packers took Jackson.

The Packers play Mahomes and the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium next Sunday.
