Everything you need to know about the XFL, from schedule to rules, which kicks off again in 2023

We’ve got you covered on everything you need to know about the XFL, which kicks off on Saturday.

The XFL makes its anticipated return on Saturday, with commissioner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s football league returning from a three-year hiatus.

With the NFL all wrapped up for the 2022-23 season, the XFL will give football fans a chance to enjoy the sport as the pros switch over offseason combines, free agent signings and draft prep.

Do you need help on knowing who the teams are? Are there players yous might recognize from the NFL? What does this all amount to in the end?

The XFL has always had a rocky history since the days it was founded by Vince McMahon in 2001. However, Johnson and company will hope this iteration of the semi-pro league will stick around and put down roots with football fans.

Let’s take a look at the things you need to know ahead of Saturday’s kickoffs.

Former Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon makes XFL roster

The former receiving yardage champion will play in the XFL’s return season

The career of Josh Gordon with the Cleveland Browns was a rollercoaster consisting of some high highs and low lows. In 2013, Gordon lead the NFL in receiving yards while playing for the Browns with 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns. But off-the-field issues and suspensions ruined the rest of his NFL career despite attempting multiple comebacks.

But the former Baylor Bear has caught on in the re-birth of the XFL as he is set to play for the Seattle Sea Dragons. There is little doubt that Gordon has always possessed the physical tools it was just the off-the-field things that always got in the way.

List of former Titans on XFL rosters in 2023

A slew of former Titans are on XFL rosters for 2023.

The XFL is rebooting the league in 2023, and it recently revealed the 51-man rosters of all eight teams, which have several former Tennessee Titans players sprinkled throughout.

The eight teams in the league this year are the St. Louis Battlehawks, Seattle Sea Dragons, San Antonio Brahmas, Arlington Renegades, DC Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, Vegas Vipers and Orlando Guardians.

On top of the former Titans players participating in the league this year, a former Titans coach is also the head coach of one of the teams, with ex-linebackers coach Jim Haslett running the Seattle squad.

We’ve already covered two of the more notable former Titans in the XFL in wide receiver Josh Gordon, who is with the Sea Dragons, and outside linebacker Vic Beasley, who is on Vegas’ roster.

But there are many more former Tennessee players on all eight rosters, with some names more obscure than others. Good luck remembering some of these guys.

Note: check out the full rosters here.

Ex-Titans WR Josh Gordon lands with XFL team

Former Titans WR Josh Gordon will be playing in the XFL in 2023.

Former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Josh Gordon will be playing in the XFL in 2023.

The XFL recently revealed the full rosters for all eight teams in the league for the upcoming 2023 reboot, and Gordon landed on the roster of the Seattle Sea Dragons.

Tennessee signed Gordon to the practice squad in September last season, but he only appeared in two games and on 24 snaps and didn’t record a reception. He was targeted just once.

After his stint in Tennessee ended in October, Gordon didn’t latch on with another team the rest of the season.

The 31-year-old has seen quite the fall from grace since a breakout 2013 season. Since then, Gordon has battled substance abuse and has received multiple suspensions as a result.

However, when he spoke to Titans media during the season, Gordon revealed that he’s in a “great place”, which was so good to hear after all the issues he had in years past.

“I feel like I’m in a great place,” he said. “I think the past few years probably have been rough on everybody… but I’m blessed to have my family support me and the teams as well. Coach Vrabel, the general manager here, the rest of the teammates, my position coach here; the Titans extended every resource to help me out and I definitely will take them up on that offer. But for now, I’m doing great and I’m enjoying myself here.”

The 86 Titans who played at least one snap in 2022

The 86 players who saw at least one snap with the Titans in 2022.

The Tennessee Titans were once again riddled with injuries during the 2022 campaign in what was a repeat of 2021, a year in which Tennessee broke the NFL record for the most players fielded with 91.

While the Titans didn’t set that mark once again in 2022, they did come close, fielding a total of 86 players, which ranked first in the NFL this past season and second all time behind their 91.

On top of their players fielded number, the Titans were also elite at putting guys on injured reserve.

The Titans were tied for the most currently on IR when the season ended with 23, and they placed the most players on the list throughout the course of the campaign with 34.

With the Titans needing bodies, we saw plenty of new faces come and go just about every week, including that exciting but ultimately disappointing cup of coffee with the man, the myth, the legend himself, Josh Gordon.

As you scroll this list of the players who saw at least one snap for Tennessee, you’re bound to go “oh yeah, he was on the team” at least once. Gordon might’ve been that guy, so sorry.

LOOK: Former Browns WR Josh Gordon suits up for the Seattle Sea Dragons

A former Brown debuts in his new XFL threads

Somewhere in an alternate timeline, wide receiver Josh Gordon won multiple receiving titles for the Cleveland Browns outside of just his 2013 campaign. The path of Gordon, however, is well-documented as he spent more time suspended by the NFL than he did on the field for the Browns. He bounced around the NFL, from the New England Patriots to the Seattle Seahawks, to the Kansas City Chiefs, and most recently with the Tennessee Titans. He has since been drafted into the XFL by the Seattle Sea Dragons.

Now today, the Sea Dragons have snapped a picture of Gordon in their matte orange helmets as he prepares to suit up for The Rock’s league. There is a reason to believe Gordon will make his way back to the NFL next season, but his career remains one of the biggest “what ifs?” in history.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel talks releasing Josh Gordon, email reply to NFL

The Titans “didn’t see enough there” to keep Josh Gordon around.

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media in his usual Monday press conference that comes after the team enjoyed a bye last week.

The Titans were busy making moves to start the week, as they announced the signing of wide receiver C.J. Board to the practice squad, which was made possible by the release of fellow wideout Josh Gordon.

The move wasn’t surprising, as the writing was on the wall when the team didn’t elevate Gordon for the Week 5 game despite being incredibly thin at wide receiver, instead opting to go with Dez Fitzpatrick.

As we suspected, Vrabel and the Titans simply didn’t see enough to warrant using him in Week 5, or to keep him on the practice squad moving forward, for that matter.

One story that popped up during the Titans’ bye week was news of Vrabel sending a reply-all email to the rest of the league that took a shot at NFL officiating for its lack of consistency.

In case you missed it, the contents of the email were as follows, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

I appreciate the time and energy that goes into these videos, but I suggest we devote every minute of our officiating departments’ time ensuring our officiating crews are as well trained in the clarifications we worked to create in the off season and that each crew is as consistent as possible. Thank you.

Vrabel not only took ownership of his email response — which was very reasonable, by the way — he also went into detail about his issues with officiating, something we all have.

Titans add C.J. Board to practice squad, release Josh Gordon

The Titans have added C.J. Board to their practice squad and released Josh Gordon.

The Tennessee Titans made a pair of moves on their practice squad on the Monday ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

The team announced it has signed former New York Giants wide receiver C.J. Board to their practice squad. He’ll take the place of wide receiver Josh Gordon, who has been released from the practice squad.

Board broke into the league with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019 but has spent the last two seasons with the Giants.

Board reeled in 15 receptions for 152 scoreless yards during his two-year stint in Big Blue, while also fielding three punts (13 yards per) and 13 kickoffs (25.2 yards per).

The Chattanooga product was released by the Giants back in September but was able to latch on with the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad before being released once again last week.

Gordon’s brief tenure in Nashville ends without a sound. The veteran played in two games for the Titans but only saw one target, 24 snaps, and didn’t record any stats.

The writing was on the wall that Gordon was likely done in Nashville after he wasn’t elevated for the Week 5 game, with Tennessee going with disappointing wideout and 2021 fourth-round pick, Dez Fitzpatrick, instead.

Tennessee is hoping to get back wide receiver Racey McMath off injured reserve this week, but his status is very much up in the air. Board could very well see playing time as soon as Sunday if McMath doesn’t return.

Titans releasing WR Josh Gordon from practice squad

The Josh Gordon experiment in Nashville is over.

The Tennessee Titans’ Josh Gordon experiment is reportedly over, as the team is set to release the wide receiver from its practice squad.

The news comes from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who confirmed a tweet from the veteran wideout on Monday morning that first made us aware this was coming.

“However brief, appreciate you Nashville,” Gordon tweeted on Monday morning prior to Rapoport’s report.

While Gordon’s arrival in Nashville brought some level of excitement as it usually does when 2013 receiving yards leader goes someplace new, his tenure with the Titans was a dud overall.

Gordon appeared in two games but didn’t record any stats. He played just 24 offensive snaps in those contests and saw just one target — and that was with Tennessee having major issues in its receiving corps.

The writing was on the wall that Gordon wasn’t long for this team after the Titans didn’t elevate him in Week 5 despite being even more short-handed at the position in the wake of wideout Treylon Burks landing on injured reserve.

Instead of bringing Gordon up, the Titans opted to go with Dez Fitzpatrick, which was a damning statement on the veteran wideout.

Gordon will now look to latch on with another team, but chances are if it didn’t work out in Tennessee with all the issues this team has at wide receiver, it won’t work anywhere else.
