Julio Rodriguez couldn’t help but laugh after Jose Altuve’s incredible jumping throw in the ALDS

Love to see that.

When it comes to postseason baseball, we’re more accustomed to seeing hyper-focused intensity to go along with the high stakes of the playoffs. But sometimes, a play can be so good that you just have to smile and tip the cap to the opponent.

Jose Altuve had one of those moments on Thursday.

During the third inning of Game 2 of the ALDS between the Astros and Mariners, Julio Rodriguez hit a grounder up the middle that easily could have been a tying RBI with two outs. Yet, Altuve brilliantly cut the ball off with a backhand and immediately went into his throw off a fading jump.

After all that, Altuve somehow managed to get enough on the throw to beat Rodriguez to the bag who had just about the best reaction imaginable for that kind of play.

Just wow.

It’s important to emphasize just how ridiculous that play was. Not only was the degree of difficulty off the charts for Altuve, but Rodriguez is also among the fastest players in baseball (97th percentile, according to Baseball Savant).

Rodriguez smiled in disbelief about the play, and he initially thought he beat the throw. But replays would show that Altuve clearly got him by a step. No wonder fans loved that entire sequence from the two stars.

Camera angle shows Jose Altuve looked safe after being called out on shallow pop-up tag-up play

Should Altuve have been called safe?

I’m honestly shocked to say this, but: Maybe Jose Altuve made the right move to tag up and head for home on a very shallow pop-up?

I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s rewind: On Monday, Yordan Alvarez hit a pop fly into foul ground on the first base side in the eighth inning of the Houston Astros’ eventual 1-0 loss to the Texas Rangers. Nathaniel Lowe caught it, not as far as you’d think from the infield.

For some reason — I guess Altuve’s speed plus maybe he thought he’d catch Lowe napping? — Altuve took off for home and was called out.

But Houston challenged. And one replay showed that he might have been safe, making Astros fans mad:

The Astros had a brilliant answer to the Mariners hitting Jose Altuve on the first pitch

Now, THAT is how you respond.

Earlier this season, the Seattle Mariners were involved in the biggest baseball brawl we’ve seen in years. And on Sunday, they were fortunate to avoid a similar scene in Houston.

Mariners All-Star rookie outfielder Julio Rodriguez was placed on the 10-day Injured List after he was hit on the right hand by a pitch mid-swing in Saturday’s game. Though X-rays were negative and the pitch clearly wasn’t intentional, the Mariners didn’t exactly take a subtle approach to retribution in Sunday’s game.

With George Kirby on the mound for Seattle, Astros star Jose Altuve was hit up high with a 95 mph fastball on the very first pitch Houston saw in the game.

Altuve went down for a few seconds before returning to his feet, nodding that he was OK. It certainly appeared to be retaliation for Rodriguez’s injury, and Yuli Gurriel avoided a high-and-tight pitch the following at-bat.

The game easily could have gotten out of hand at that point, but the Astros instead used the free baserunner to their advantage. Later in the inning, Altuve would score on a perfectly executed double steal of home.

MLB fans had plenty of thoughts on the whole sequence as well.
