Former Colorado WR Jordyn Tyson transfers to Arizona State

Former #cubuffs WR Jordyn Tyson is headed to the desert

Colorado’s leading receiver in 2022 has found his next destination.

Jordyn Tyson transferred to Arizona State on Tuesday after being a rare bright spot on Colorado’s offense last fall. Tyson finished his freshman campaign with 22 catches for 470 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Buffs in the latter two categories and establishing himself as a big play threat.

He was among a mass exodus of Buffs who decided to leave the program this spring, joining seven other receivers in the portal, including Montana Lemonious-Craig, who entered the portal after a standout spring game.

Tyson will continue honing his craft in the Pac-12 and he definitely has the talent to leave a mark with the Sun Devils.

CBS Sports sees wide receiver as a potential problem for the Oklahoma Sooners

Coming out of spring ball, CBS Sports believes wide receiver is a lingering question for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Spring ball did a lot to provide optimism about the direction of the Oklahoma Sooners in Year 2 under Brent Venables. The defense looks improved through transfer portal additions and recruiting acquisitions.

If there’s an area of concern, it may be on the offensive side of the ball, where the offensive line has dealt with injuries. While that’s certainly an issue, Shehan Jeyarajah of CBS Sports believes it’s the wide receiver position that may be the biggest issue for Oklahoma coming out of spring ball.

In his piece titled “Big 12 Overreactions,” Jeyarajah had this to say:

The Sooners don’t have receivers:Ā Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby’s system is built around using dominant wide receivers to spread the field and create opportunities. After the departures of Marvin Mims, Brayden Willis andĀ Theo Wease, Oklahoma doesn’t have the receivers to run the system well.Ā Jalil FarooqĀ andĀ Drake Stoops are the only returning receivers on the roster with more than 100 yards receiving last season, and the duo combined for just 11.3 yards per catch. No one obvious stepped up and stole a role in spring camp. Even if the defense improves, the offense isn’t explosive enough to compete for the Big 12 unless a major addition is on the way. – Jeyarajah, CBS Sports

Outside wide receiver opposite [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag] is certainly a question mark. Farooq looks to be in line for a big-time opportunity due to his ability to win at all levels of the passing game.

Slot wide receiver looks to be in great shape with [autotag]Drake Stoops[/autotag], [autotag]Gavin Freeman[/autotag] and newcomer [autotag]Brenen Thompson[/autotag]. However, Oklahoma lacks a true downfield weapon to replace [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag].

There are some intriguing options: [autotag]Andrel Anthony[/autotag], Thompson, [autotag]Jayden Gibson[/autotag], Nic Anderson, [autotag]LV Bunkley-Shelton[/autotag] and [autotag]J.J. Hester[/autotag]. As Jeyarajah mentions, nobody made a significant run at the starting spot vacated by Mims.

Oklahoma hasn’t been shy about adding wide receivers in the transfer portal this offseason. It has already brought in a pair of potential weapons, Anthony and Thompson, and has a chance to add more production, Colorado transfer WR [autotag]Jordyn Tyson[/autotag].

Tyson has the big-play ability the Sooners are missing on the outside, and he produced as a true freshman for the Buffaloes with 22 receptions, 470 yards, and four touchdowns. He broke out in a big way over the final three games of the season for Colorado with 13 catches for 344 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 26.5 yards per reception.

Oklahoma wide receivers coach [autotag]Emmett Jones[/autotag] and offensive coordinator [autotag]Jeff Lebby[/autotag] have time to resolve the question surrounding the wide receiver group. There are options. It’s simply a matter of seeing which of those players rises to the occasion and seizes a role ahead of the 2023 college football season.

Texas A&M has reached out to former Colorado WR Jordyn Tyson

Texas A&M has reportedly reached out to former Colorado wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, joining more than a dozen other programs

It’s no surprise that Texas A&M is still in the market for wide receiver talent in the evergrowing transfer portal, which is now closed as of Sunday, Apr. 30. After Colorado’s notable April player purge under first-year head coach Deion Sanders, a treasure trove of productivity is there for the taking, and for the Aggies, one player, former Colorado WR Jordyn Tyson, has the caught attention of head coach Jimbo Fisher after his stellar 2022 campaign.

Tyson led the Buffaloes in receiving yards (470) and touchdowns (4) during his memorable freshman season, despite Colorado’s abysmal 1-11 record, and after entering the portal last month, his stock is at an all-time high with nearly every receiver-needy program in the country.

A native of Allen, Texas, Tyson’s 6-2, 185-pound frame paired with his deep-threat speed and versatility at all three receiving spots makes him a candidate for instant playing time no matter where ends up but let’s be honest, his fit the Aggies is borderline perfect, and opens ups the offense even more in offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino’s inaugural season with the program.

Top 10 uncommitted transfer portal players, per 247Sports

There are still several four-star transfers who’ve yet to commit

Now that the spring transfer portal window is closed, we should see plenty of commitments over the next few weeks throughout college football.

At Colorado, head coach Deion Sanders has already received pledges from Omarion Cooper (Florida State), Sav’ell Smalls (Washington), Tar’Varish Dawson (Auburn) and Jahquez Robinson (Alabama) in recent days. However, Coach Prime’s work is far from finished with about 20 open scholarship spots left to fill.

As of Wednesday, there are 12 four-star transfers, including Montana Lemonious-Craig and Jordyn Tyson, who are looking for a new home.

Below are the top 10 uncommitted transfer portal players, according to 247Sports:

Oklahoma Sooners host Colorado transfer WR Jordyn Tyson

The Sooners continue their pursuit at the wide receiver position, hosting Colorado transfer Jordyn Tyson.

The Oklahoma Sooners left the spring with an unanswered question at wide receiver opposite Jalil Farooq.

The Sooners have a group of guys that will be factors, but nobody separated themselves. As the Sooners look to fortify that their ranks, they’ve brought in a pair of transfer wide receivers this offseason: Andrel Anthony and Brenen Thompson. They are hosting another one.

According to Collin Kennedy of Sooners Illustrated at 247Sports, Oklahoma welcomed Colorado transfer wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson is a part of the mass exodus taking place at Colorado this spring in Deion Sanders’ first year with the Buffaloes.

A former three-star prospect in the 2022 class, Tyson played in nine games as a true freshman. He caught 22 passes for 470 yards and averaged 21.4 yards per reception in 2022.

He really came on strongly toward the end of the season when he had a three-game stretch with 13 receptions for 344 yards and two touchdowns. In that stretch against Oregon State, Arizona State and Oregon, he averaged an incredible 26.5 yards per reception.

A former star at Allen High School, Tyson caught 80 passes for 1,518 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior year in 2021. Who was the quarterback throwing him the football during his senior year at Allen? Oklahoma’s 2024 quarterback commit, [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag].

With the Sooners pursuing Tyson, it’s clear they aren’t satisfied with their downfield options after the spring game. Jordyn Tyson is a big-play threat that could slot right into the Marvin Mims role if he were to pick the University of Oklahoma as his next college home.

What departing Colorado players and a parent are saying about Deion Sanders’ roster purge

Grant Page and the father of another departing player shared their thoughts on Coach Prime’s roster purge with the Denver Post

It has been a messy 48 hours in Boulder.

As of Tuesday evening, 23 Colorado football players have entered the transfer portal since Saturday’s spring game concluded, bringing the Buffs down to 16 returning scholarship players.

Head coach Deion Sanders made it clear following the spring game that his team would look significantly different come fall, but this mass exodus has been jarring. Players such as Montana Lemonious-Craig, Jordyn Tyson, Travis Gray and Jalen Sami hitting the portal.

On Monday, Denver Post sports columnist Sean Keeler exposed the “ugly side” of Coach Prime’s rebuild after interviewing Tyson’s father and departing Buffs wide receiver Grant Page. Below are a few highlights from that article paired with a couple of other noteworthy voices:

Standout CU Buffs WR Jordyn Tyson to look for opportunities elsewhere

Standout freshman WR Jordyn Tyson will be looking for opportunities elsewhere

Standout Colorado football WR Jordyn Tyson entered the transfer portal on Monday, becoming the latest Buffs pass catcher to look for opportunities elsewhere, along with junior Montana Lemonious-Craig, Chase Sowell and Grant Page.

Tyson had a productive freshman campaign in 2022, tallying 22 catches for a team-leading 470 yards and four touchdowns before suffering a season-ending injury.

Time will tell where Tyson ultimately lands, but he should get plenty of interest in the portal given that he still has three years of eligibility remaining and was one of the Buffs’ rare bright spots in 2022.

Between him and Lemonious-Craig, Colorado now has a sudden hole to patch in its WR room. That hole could be patched by dynamic two-way player Travis Hunter in 2023. Hunter has been learning the offensive playbook this spring and figures to have a big role on that side of the ball this fall.

Colorado WRs coach Brett Bartolone excited for Jordyn Tyson’s return in the fall

New #cubuffs wide receivers coach Brett Bartolone said he’s looking forward to Jordyn Tyson’s return in the fall

Spring football is right around the corner, and everybody is eagerly waiting to get a glimpse of the new-look Colorado Buffaloes football team with Deion Sanders wearing the headset.

One returning Buff who might see an uptick in usage is wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. However, Tyson won’t be available for spring ball, according to Colorado wide receivers coach Brett Bartolone (h/t Jake Schwanitz of DNVR).

“Jordyn Tyson is a phenomenal player,” Bartolone said. “We look forward to getting him back in the fall. The talent level is there, it’s just a matter of getting him acclimated to the new system.”

Tyson made some noise this past season, but a lower leg injury saw his season end early and the recovery is taking some time. Tyson even threw a 37-yard pass in the win against Cal, and it’ll be interesting to see how new offensive coordinator Sean Lewis incorporates all of this talent into the offense.

Tyson also had an 81-yard score against Oregon, so there is a lot of excitement brewing in Boulder.

The Buffs added a lot of talent on offense, including a pair of USF transfer WRs and Travis Hunter, the two-way five-star player from Jackson State.

Jordyn Tyson’s freshman season cut short due to injury

Colorado’s leading receiver is done for the season

Colorado football interim head coach Mike Sanford revealed on Sunday that true freshman wide receiver Jordyn Tyson suffered a season-ending lower-leg injury in the Buffs’ loss to Oregon over the weekend.

Tyson was one of CU’s few bright spots on offense this season and was recently named both the Pac-12 freshman of the week and special teams player of the week for his two touchdowns and 246 all-purpose yards against Arizona State. He also added another 137 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Ducks before suffering a fourth-quarter injury.

Moving forward, we’ll likely see either Chase Penry or Jack Hestera take over punt return dutiesĀ in the final three games.

Wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan summed up the disappointment of losing Tyson:

Oregon at Colorado highlights: Big play Jordyn Tyson puts Buffs on the board with 81-yard TD

WATCH: Big play Jordyn Tyson did it again

True freshman Jordyn Tyson proved once again why he’s Colorado’s most dangerous offensive weapon.

Down 21-0 against No. 8 Oregon and facing a third-and-10 in the second quarter, Buffs quarterback JT Shrout went for a little more than just the first down when he found Tyson wide open about 50 yards downfield. Tyson caught the pass in stride and scored what would be an 81-yard touchdown, his fifth total of the season.

Including an 88-yard punt return TD and a 58-yard reception last week, the Buffs’ rookie wide receiver is now averaging 51.6 yards per score.

At the half, Tyson has 104 receiving yards with Colorado down 28-7 to the Ducks.
