Weird look: Jordan Poyer reports for Dolphins training camp

Strange:

Jordan Poyer is taking in his first day with the Miami Dolphins and even though it was always going to happen… it still feels weird.

Poyer, 32, was released by the Buffalo Bills this offseason in a salary-cap move. The 2021 and 2022 All-Pro safety rose to NFL fame while roaming Buffalo’s secondary from 2017 to 2023.

On Tuesday, plenty of NFL teams welcomed their veteran players to training camp. The Bills and Dolphins were both among them and a video of Poyer was shared by Miami.

Poyer signed with the Dolphins following his release in Buffalo but seeing the former Bill even just walking through the doors in Florida feels like an odd sight.

Can rookie Cole Bishop reverse the Bills’ safety woes in 2024?

Rookie safety Cole Bishop could be the key to fixing one of the Bills’ most pressing roster issues.

Josh Allen is the face of the Buffalo Bills franchise, but from 2017 through 2022, as the team ascended to the status of perennial Super Bowl contender, the Bills’ defense was defined by the safety duo of Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde. While the Bills cycled through their fronts and linebackers, Poyer and Hyde were the spine of Sean McDermott’s defenses.

Until last season, when it all fell apart.

The Bills ranked 12th in Defensive DVOA in 2023 after ranking second the year before. That had a lot to do with horrible injury luck overall, but it also spoke to a decline at the safety position. Poyer allowed 33 catches on 45 targets for 349 yards, 136 yards after the catch, one touchdown, no interceptions, five pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 102.9. Hyde allowed 25 catches on 32 targets for 314 yards, 80 yards after the catch, four touchdowns, two interceptions, two pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 121.1.

Poyer is now with the Dolphins on a one-year, $2 million contract. Hyde is a free agent on the open market. The Bills, who are in rebuild mode in a lot of ways, are elevating Taylor Rapp as a safety after a 2023 season in which he earned starting reps the right way. And with the 60th overall pick in the 2024 draft, Buffalo took Utah safety Cole Bishop to round it out.

This could be a big deal. Last season for the Utes, Bishop allowed 14 catches on 27 targets for 170 yards, 58 yards after the catch, two touchdowns, two interceptions, one pass breakup, and an opponent passer rating of 65.4.

Moreover, Bishop perfectly fits what the Bills want their safeties to do.

“They want their safeties to do a lot,” Bishop said after the pick. “I think my versatility is something that kind of separates me, so being able to go to a team that you’re able to be versatile is huge. So I think I’m going to be able to excel as best I can.”

General manager Brandon Beane was certainly on board; he was pretty worried that Bishop wouldn’t be where Beane wanted him to be in the draft order.

“He really impressed us throughout the process, his knowledge of the game, his smarts, everyone at Utah raves about him,” Beane said of Bishop. “Probably one of the most consensus players on our board.

“To add a guy that fits our defense the way he does and where we had him on the board … I would have been thrilled giving up something in the draft, you know fourth, fifth round to go get him.”

Why are the Bills so happy about their new guy? Because Bishop can get it done all over the field.

From slot to the deep third, Bishop comes into the NFL with a well-developed skill set, having already played in a defense that’s NFL-conversant to a large degree.

Can Cole Bishop turn around one of the most important positions in Buffalo’s defense? Don’t bet against him.

Dolphins reportedly signing former Jets, Saints safety Marcus Maye

The Dolphins are reportedly adding veteran safety Marcus Maye to the mix in their secondary.

The Miami Dolphins are addressing their lackluster safety depth by signing veteran Marcus Maye, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.

Maye, 31, spent the first five seasons of his career with the New York Jets after he was picked in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft by the team. He started 60 games with the team before joining the New Orleans Saints as a free agent in 2022 on a three-year, $28.5 million deal.

While Maye only played two seasons on that contract, he was released after starting 17 games with the Saints. He finished 2023 on the team’s injured reserve due to a shoulder issue and served a three-game suspension earlier in the year due to a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

The Dolphins have a rising star at safety in Jevon Holland, but it’s been a revolving door next to him in the secondary. The team plugged DeShon Elliott into the starting lineup on a one-year deal in 2023 and signed Jordan Poyer earlier this offseason to take over in 2024.

Behind the starting duo of Holland and Poyer, the Dolphins have veteran special teamer Elijah Campbell and sixth-round rookie Patrick McMorris who will compete with Maye for snaps.

Jordan Poyer says Josh Allen is NFL’s best QB, but ‘I love Tua, too’

Jordan Poyer says his lofty praise of Josh Allen over the weekend wasn’t meant as a slight against his new teammate, Tua Tagovailoa.

After seven seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Jordan Poyer developed a high opinion of Josh Allen.

“You’ve got the best quarterback in the league,” Poyer told Bills fans at a charity event in Buffalo on Sunday. “I know that might go viral, but it’s OK. I get to see y’all twice a year. I can’t wait. You guys come down to Miami. I get to come back to Orchard Park one more time.”

Just one problem: the Bills are a division rival for Poyer now that he’s a member of the Miami Dolphins. And calling a rival quarterback “the best” in the NFL will inevitably raise eyebrows when it’s Tua Tagovailoa in the same locker room as Poyer now.

“I love Tua. I love Tua,” Poyer said Tuesday at the Dolphins’ OTAs. “That’s one of the big reasons why I’m here. He is who he is. And Josh is – I’ve been his teammate for seven years. I’ve seen so many plays that he has made. You could argue Aaron Rodgers, Tua, Josh whoever you want to argue. At the end of the day that’s my dog. I love Josh, I cannot wait to play him. But I love Tua, too.

“This offense is a high attack scoring offense. My job on the other end is to get Tua the ball back as fast as I can to let Tua score some points.”

Poyer’s first reunion game against the Bills will come early in the 2024 season when the Dolphins host a Thursday night game against Buffalo in Week 2. His return to Orchard Park will happen seven weeks later in a Week 9 game.

Ex-Bills safety Jordan Poyer properly said goodbye to Buffalo by gassing up Josh Allen

Jordan Poyer is Josh Allen’s rival now and he still can’t stop praising him.

During his seven-year stint with the Buffalo Bills, Jordan Poyer slowly became one of the NFL’s premier safeties. Alongside the gifts of Josh Allen, Poyer was one of the bigger reasons for the Bills’ resurgence over the last half-decade. And even though Poyer is now a Miami Dolphin, he still seems to think the world of his new rival quarterback.

According to NFL.com’s Kevin Patra, Poyer decided to finally say goodbye to Buffalo by gassing up Allen. While commenting on his time in Western New York, Poyer called Allen the NFL’s top quarterback.

Those are very interesting choice words for someone who now shares a team with Tua Tagovailoa.

More from NFL.com:

“Seven years out here, man,” Poyer said. “I loved every moment of it. Thank you so much for allowing me to grow as a person, as a player. Teammates, coaches, everybody, man, I loved every moment of it. Sorry we couldn’t get it done, but you’ve got the best quarterback in the league. I know that might go viral, but it’s OK. I get to see y’all twice a year. I can’t wait. You guys come down to Miami. I get to come back to Orchard Park one more time.”

I’m sure Poyer means every word he says about Allen. While most would probably still pick Patrick Mahomes, Allen does have a worthy case as the 1B quarterback to the man in Kansas City. And a former teammate will always glow a bit more. Even still, it’s kinda funny to hear Poyer sing the praises of Allen as he simultaneously tries to get over the hump with an AFC East division rival. Because now, well, Allen is technically standing in the way of Poyer’s potential personal success.

Talk about an awkward but still warranted compliment.

Jordan Poyer says goodbye, calls Josh Allen NFL’s best

Jordan Poyer: Josh Allen is NFL’s best:

Jordan Poyer was released by the Buffalo Bills and moved on.

… Unfortunately to the Miami Dolphins. The veteran signed with Buffalo’s AFC East rival as a free agent this offseason.

Even so, he was back with the Bills this past weekend at Micah Hyde’s charity softball event at Sahlen’s Field in downtown Buffalo. While there, Poyer got a chance to say goodbye to fans.

“It was really surreal. I didn’t know what to expect coming out here today, but Bills Mafia showed out as always,” Poyer said via the Buffalo News. “It was just really cool to see the support from the fans out here. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later.”

Poyer, who spent seven years with the Bills, was received well by at the event. He also got the crowd going with one of his comments.

While his new team’s quarterback is Tua Tagovailoa, he still called someone else the “best quarterback in the league”: Josh Allen.

Bills’ Sean McDermott explains importance of locker room leadership

#Bills’ Sean McDermott explains importance of locker room leadership:

Bills coach Sean McDermott has always expressed the importance of his team captains. They provide the leadership for the rest of the locker room when McDermott himself is not around.

This offseason when defensive backs Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer departed the Bills, a chunk of that was lost.

During an appearance on former Bill Eric Wood’s podcast, McDermott explained that leadership is not something that just appears out of thin air. Instead, it’s a process of growing that in someone over time.

“It is an important trait of any successful team,” McDermott said.

Jordan Poyer jokes about facing Josh Allen in the open field during Bills-Dolphins

Jordan Poyer jokes about facing Josh Allen in the open field during Bills-Dolphins:

Jordan Poyer has moved on from the Bills but is still in the AFC East with the Dolphins.

That means he’ll be facing his former team who released him earlier this offseason twice in 2024.

During a recent chat with another former Bill, Eric Wood, on his podcast, Poyer gave his thoughts about potentially having to tackle his former teammate Josh Allen.

Poyer was confident in himself… but couldn’t hold back a laugh. Even he had to admit he has no idea  what he’s going to do.

Jordan Poyer explains what his lasting memory will be from time with Bills

Poyer still appreciates #BillsMafia:

Jordan Poyer has departed the Buffalo Bills but he will always have a special place for his former team.

Poyer was released by the Bills after the 2023 season in a salary cap move. He ended up signing with the Miami Dolphins.

Poyer recently joined another former Bill, Eric Wood, on his podcast. Wood asked Poyer his lasting memory of Buffalo.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Poyer had tremendous moments on the field after he signed with the Bills in 2017. However, Poyer noted that his lasting thought on Bills Mafia and the Buffalo community will be how they generally embraced him and supported him during his battle with alcoholism was what meant the most to him.

USC S Calen Bullock shares photo of visit with Dolphins

USC strong safety Calen Bullock toured the Dolphins’ facility Thursday.

USC Trojans safety Calen Bullock had a pre-draft visit with the Miami Dolphins, he shared on social media Thursday.

On his Instagram story, Bullock posted a photo from inside the Baptist Health Training Complex, the Dolphins’ practice facility located across the street from Hard Rock Stadium.

Bullock earned First Team All-Pac-12 honors in 2023 after recording two interceptions, seven pass breakups, and 63 tackles. The safety, who will turn 21 later this month, opted to forgo his senior season with the Trojans and enter the 2024 NFL draft.

At the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, Bullock measured in at 6’2, 188 pounds and ran a 4.48 40-yard dash.

According to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, Bullock may better project as a cornerback in the professional ranks after showing a tendency to take poor angles and miss run fits at USC. “Bullock can be scary good in coverage and scary bad as a run defender,” Zierlein wrote.

The Dolphins have a rising star at free safety in Jevon Holland, but a stopgap solution at strong safety in 33-year-old free agent acquisition Jordan Poyer. Miami could use a developmental talent at safety, and could also use depth at cornerback.

In a recent seven-round mock draft posted by ESPN, Bullock was projected to land in the second round.
