On this day, legendary Boston Celtics team president and coach Red Auerbach passed away in 2006.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, legendary Celtics team president and coach Arnold “Red” Auerbach passed away at the age of 89 in 2006. Auerbach assembled a career in basketball unparalleled in its time and to this day, winning nine titles with the team as a coach, and seven more as an executive.

He joined the franchise in 1950 after stints coaching the Washington Capitols (now defunct) in the Basketball Association of America (BAA – a precursor league to the NBA) and at the NCAA level as an assistant coach with the Duke Blue Devils before joining the Celtics.

Red — as he was often called — transformed the game with his emphasis on the fast break and team-focused play reliant on ball movement at all positions.

This is every player in Boston’s history who wore the Celtics’ No. 55 jersey for at least one game as of Aug. 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 13 players who wore No. 55 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

On this day: Celtics sign Baynes, Ojeleye, Mickey; Humphries traded

On this day, the Boston Celtics signed Aron Baynes, Semi Ojeleye, and Jordan Mickey, and traded Kris Humphries.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team signed Australian big man Aron Baynes in free agency to a one-year deal worth $4.3 million in 2017. All of Australia — as he was sometimes called — quickly became an invaluable part of the Celtics front line, known for his excellent defense and verticality as much as his unexpectedly solid 3-point shooting with the team.

A New Zealander by birth, Baynes played for the team for two seasons before he was dealt away to the Phoenix Suns in order to help make cap room for major roster reshuffling following the disastrous 2018-19 season (no fault of Aron’s, really).

The big man averaged 5.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while with the franchise.

On this day: Hayward, Wilcox sign; Mickey waived; Red stays

On this day, the Boston Celtics signed Gordon Hayward and Chris Wilcox, waived Jordan Mickey, and didn’t lose Red Auerbach to the New York Knicks.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team officially signed All-Star veteran forward Gordon Hayward away from the Utah Jazz in free agency after a kerfuffle on the fourth of the month over whether he had actually left the Jazz. The Butler product’s contract, a four-year, $128 million deal with a player option on its final year, started on a gruesome note that took several seasons to recover from.

A devastating injury to his ankle ended Hayward’s first season with Boston just a few minutes into the 2018-19 NBA season. The Indiana native worked diligently over the next two seasons to get back to his old self and abilities.

Unfortunately, by the time he had mostly recovered his game, it was on a team that needed him in less of a starring and more of a supporting role.

On this day: Johnson, Jerebko signed; Lee trade; Paxson, Mickey born

On this day in 2015, the Boston Celtics signed Amir Johnson and Jonas Jerebko and traded for David Lee.

On this date in Boston Celtics history, the team signed big man Amir Johnson to a two-year, $24 million contract. The Los Angeles native had previously played for the Toronto Raptors for the previous six seasons before decamping to the Celtics, and the Detroit Pistons for four more before that after being drafted directly out of high school by that team 56th overall in the 2005 NBA draft.

Johnson was a key part of the franchise’s post-Banner 17 rebuild, anchoring the team’s interior as a veteran presence while averaging 6.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 0.9 blocks per game.

Johnson would leave the team in free agency to join the Philadelphia 76ers in the summer of 2017.

On this day: Rozier, Billups, Mercer, Kreklow, Hunter, Mickey drafted

On this day, the Boston Celtics drafted several players in multiple drafts, including Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, Ron Mercer, and Wayne Kreklow.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise took just one player of note in the 1979 NBA draft, held in New York City at the Plaza Hotel, after having traded away their first-round draft pick. The sole player selected by the Celtics that year was 6-foot-4 shooting guard Wayne Kreklow, taken with the 53rd overall pick in the draft’s third round (drafts went on much longer then than they do today).

A native of Neenah, Wisconsin, Kreklow had been playing college ball at Drake before being drafted by Boston. He did not initially make the team, not unusual for a prospect drafted so late. But, instead of being waived, he would play a season with the Maine Lumberjacks of the Continental Basketball Association (the equivalent of the G League in that era), where he averaged 9.6 points per game.

Kreklow would join the team for the 1980-81 season, helping to win a championship in a reserve role that saw him average 1.2 points over 25 games with the Celtics in his sole season with the franchise.
