Report Card: Grading the Sooners following their 52-31 win over TCU

The Sooners dispatched TCU relatively comfortably. Let’s take a look at how each position group graded out in the 52-31 win.

For a while, it may have seemed like an afterthought to grade out the offense with A’s and B’s across the board. However, that time has arrived.  The offense was a bright spot, and the defense wasn’t as bad as maybe it appeared.

As we do each week, let’s look at how each position group graded in the Sooners 52-31 thrashing of the TCU Horned Frogs.

Quarterbacks: A

No need to beat around the bush here: Caleb Williams was phenomenal in his first start since usurping Spencer Rattler in Oklahoma’s thrilling come-from-behind win against Texas.

He dazzled the sold-out crowd in Norman and had national media in an uproar. Williams was 18 of 23 for 295 yards passing and four touchdowns, three of which made their way to Jadon Haselwood. He added 66 yards rushing, including the electric 41-yard TD run in the third quarter you can see below.

After that performance, there’s no need to speculate about who will be the quarterback as Oklahoma heads to the state of Kansas again for their second true road game against the Kansas Jayhawks.

The next step for Williams is to continue to mature and grow within the offense.

Up Next: Backs and Pass Catchers

Stopping the run vital to Oklahoma’s success vs. TCU

The Oklahoma Sooners have faced tough runners the last few weeks and will get another test this week against Zach Evans and Kendre Miller.

After facing Deuce Vaughn two weeks ago and Bijan Robinson last week, the Oklahoma Sooners will face another tough test with Zach Evans coming to Norman this evening.

Evans, the lead running back for TCU, and Kendre Miller lead the Horned Frogs offense and will be the focus of defensive coordinator Alex Grinch’s gameplan.

Last week, the Horned Frogs racked up nearly 400 yards rushing en route to a blow out win in Lubbock. Stopping the run will be crucial if the Oklahoma Sooners hope to improve to 7-0 on the season.

It all starts up front for the Sooners who will rely on Perrion Winfrey, Isaiah Coe, and Jordan Kelley. With Jalen Redmond still on the sidelines, this trio must continue to be strong up front, helping the Sooners linebacker corps stay clean and have a chance to run.

They’ve got to win their matchups inside and get penetration. If they can get into the backfield or at least keep the offensive line from getting to the linebackers at the second level, it will go a long way to slowing the Horned Frogs rushing attack.

Tackling will be a key at every level as that’s been a problem for much of this season. In order to limit the missed tackles, the Sooners need to get guys to the ball carrier in bunches. Much like the last two weeks, it won’t be enough to get one defender to the running back. The Sooners need to tackle as a team in order to limit the impact that Zach Evans and Kendre Miller have on the outcome of this game.

TCU showed last week that they’re more than happy to run the ball and keep it out of Max Duggan’s hands if they can. The Sooners can’t allow the TCU ground attack to dictate the flow of the football game.

The Oklahoma Sooners rank eighth in the country at stopping the run. They’ve been up for every challenge they’ve faced in 2021.

After a rough first half against Bijan Robinson and the Texas offense, they bounced back and held Robinson and the Texas offense in check as they rallied to overcome an 18 point halftime deficit.

With another tough test ahead, hopefully their second half performance from a week ago can be the catalyst for this week’s outcome. For the Sooners to win the game, it’ll start with controlling the TCU Horned Frogs rushing attack.

Oklahoma Football Notebook: Calvin Thibodeaux, Josh Ellison, Justin Broiles and Jordan Kelley talk Monday

The final week of Oklahoma football spring practices has arrived with the Sooners getting their final rounds of practice in before Saturday’s spring game at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

For many fans, the excitement to see Alex Grinch’s defense in its third iteration is as high it could possibly be. Specifically up front, Oklahoma looks to have an elite level of depth with numerous players who can make this happen and impact a game at any time.

On Monday, defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux discussed just that along with defensive lineman Josh Ellison, defensive back Justin Broiles and defensive lineman Jordan Kelley. Here are some of the highlights of what they had to say:

Oklahoma football notebook: Alex Grinch, Nik Bonitto, Tre Brown, Jordan Kelley talk Wednesday

Ahead of Oklahoma’s trip to face Texas Tech, Alex Grinch, Nik Bonitto, Tre Brown, and Jordan Kelley met with the media Wednesday.

No. 24 Oklahoma (3-2, 2-2) is fresh off a wire-to-wire win over TCU and now turn their attention to Texas Tech (2-3, 1-3) for a Halloween night collision in Lubbock.

The Sooners’ defense has had a bit of an up-and-down season to this point, but are coming off certainly its most complete performance in Big 12 play to this point.

They only allowed the Horned Frogs to get in the end zone twice (one of which was in garbage time) and TCU averaged only three yards per rushing attempt.

On Wednesday, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch along with defensive players Nik Bonitto, Tre Brown and Jordan Kelley met with the media to discuss to latest with the Sooner defense and team ahead of the matchup with Texas Tech.

Here is what they had to say.
