6 Rams to watch in preseason Week 2 vs. Raiders

Here are 6 players to watch as the Rams take on the Raiders in the second week of the preseason.

The Los Angeles Rams will host the Las Vegas Raiders for their second preseason contest on Saturday. The Rams are coming off a 34-17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in their preseason opener, but the team is focused on determining certain position battles rather than winning meaningless games.

With Week 1 only a few weeks away, time is ticking for players to show enough to earn a roster spot. Ahead of Saturday’s preseason meeting with the Raiders, here are six players from the Rams to pay attention to.

Undrafted rookie Jordan Jones could be a sleeper at CB for the Rams

Jordan Jones impressed Raheem Morris in his preseason debut, playing well in the star position against the Chargers

The Rams’ cornerback group is full of youth and potential, from Cobie Durant down to rookie Tre Tomlinson. Ahkello Witherspoon added a nice dash of veteran experience when the Rams signed him, but there probably isn’t a cornerback room in the NFL that’s younger than Los Angeles’.

As such, there’s a lot of room for movement. The Rams could keep as many as six or seven corners this year and Jordan Jones is making the case to be one of them. The undrafted rookie out of Rhode Island played well in his preseason debut against the Chargers on Saturday night, leading the team with five tackles and constantly finding himself around the ball.

He wasn’t perfect in coverage, allowing seven catches for 65 yards, but Jones was often close enough to the receiver to make the tackle shortly after the reception was made. That’s a good sign for a cornerback, even if he’s allowing receptions.

He showed off his play recognition on this screen pass, which he blew up for a loss of yardage.

Jones’ play caught the attention of Raheem Morris, who noted his impressive play with the first unit on defense – a group that included other potential starters such as Russ Yeast, Quentin Lake, Michael Hoecht and Byron Young.

“Jordan had a chance to go out there with the first group the other night and really did a nice job,” Morris said. “He made some mistakes, he made some really good tackles, he ran around, he played fast, and I look forward to him making the next step in this next game as well.”

That quote stemmed from a question about the star position, which is where Jalen Ramsey played for the last few years. The star is the defender who lines up in the slot, but he can also play outside cornerback when needed, too.

Jones played there on Saturday and has lined up in the slot throughout the summer, adding some depth behind Durant. The same goes for Shaun Jolly, while Tanner Ingle and Yeast have also gotten opportunities in the slot.

For now, it sounds like Jones is behind Jolly on the depth chart, but if he continues to impress in the preseason, he could earn himself a spot on the 53-man roster as the sixth or seventh cornerback.

“Cobie’s been out going out with the ones most of the time. We’ve seen a lot of Shaun Jolly out there with the twos and sometimes mixed in with the ones based on rotations of the day, so to speak,” Morris said. “And then that provided days when you gave Cobie a rest or Jolly due to a small tweak or setback. And then you got guys like Jordan Jones in there. You’ve been able to see Tanner Ingle go in there, and you’ve seen a bunch of different guys bounce around, a little bit of Russ in walk-through. So when you watch those guys go out and you’re developing all these guys that play inside, you’re just increasing their knowledge base.”

No one had a higher tackle grade for the Rams on Saturday than Jones, which is where he really stood out. He’s a physical defender, which is exactly what you need to be in order to play the star position. Jones just needs to improve in coverage, which we’ll hopefully see this weekend against the Raiders.

But there’s no doubt he’s a player to watch as we approach the start of the season.

Rams met with Rhode Island CB Jordan Jones

The Rams are showing interest in CB Jordan Jones, who set a record at URI with 33 PBUs

Cornerback is a position the Los Angeles Rams are likely to address early in the NFL draft this year, particularly after trading away Jalen Ramsey earlier in the offseason. They’ve met with a few corners already and Rhode Island’s Jordan Jones can be added to the list.

The former URI Ram has met or spoken with the NFL’s Rams, according to Aaron Wilson, a sign of Los Angeles’ interest in him as a prospect.

Jones was first-team All-CAA in 2022 and was a second-team All-American in 2021, so he put together quite the career with the Rams. He also holds the school record with 33 passes defensed, breaking up 33 over the course of three seasons.

At URI, he was listed at 6 feet and 180 pounds, so he has good size for a cornerback, even if he’s on the more slender size.

Former Hogs wideout Jordan Jones has found a home with Bobby Petrino

Bobby Petrino isn’t the only one from Missouri State making a return to Arkansas on Saturday.

Jordan Jones was once considered one of, if not the, fastest player on the Arkansas football roster.

That was a long time ago.

Now 24 years old and at his third school, Jones, an Arkansas graduate, will come back to the place where his college career started on Saturday. Incidentally, alongside his coach, Bobby Petrino, who helped the Hogs to heights they haven’t seen since.

Jones is in his first year at Missouri State after spending the last two seasons at Cincinnati, a team the Hogs beat in Week 1. Jones started and caught two passes for the Bears in their Week 1 game before being placed on concussion protocol after suffering an injury in practice last week. Petrino expects Jones to play – again – inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Jones caught 38 passes for 592 yards and four touchdowns during his three on-field seasons with the Razorbacks. He was the No. 4 player in the state coming out of a powerhouse Smackover program and his 21 grabs with three touchdowns his freshman season suggested a promising future and his 17 grabs the next year were fair, too.

But an ankle injury that was supposed to keep him out for a month in 2019 turned into a lost season. Jones never played for the Razorbacks again, though he did stick around to graduate in 2020.

His career took him to the Bearcats, the team with which he caught 17 more passes before leaving as a graduate transfer back closer to home. Now, with the Bears ranked No. 6 in FCS and Jones in his final go-around, he’s hoping to relive those early days inside his home state’s flagship school’s home stadium.

Even if it’s for the other team.
