Notre Dame athletics announces new Name, Image and Likeness collective

It’s time to “RALLY”

While many schools across the nation were quick to push out Name, Image and Likeness collectives, Notre Dame wanted to wait to roll out its own that best suited the needs of the Irish’s student-athletes.

That day has finally come, as on Monday the Irish announced “[autotag]RALLY[/autotag],” described in a press release as “a collective and lifestyle agency for the next iteration of collegiate athletics dedicated to creating meaningful and market-based name, image and likeness (NIL) opportunities for Notre Dame student-athletes.”

RALLY is led by the Board of Directors chairman Jack Shields, who graduated in 1983, along with a few others most notably [autotag]Jordan Cornette[/autotag] and [autotag]Hannah Storm[/autotag]. Having two former Irish media stars in the group is a big deal, as they’ll help navigate through some potentially unknown waters within that industry.

You can learn more at ndrally.com, where they attempt to connect prospect student-athletes, businesses and fans of Notre Dame to help the cause.

While some students-athletes have already gotten themselves involved in NIL deals, this will open the doors for many more in the future.

Former Notre Dame basketball player out at ESPN

Too talented to be down long…

If you’re familiar with the ACC Network then you’re certainly familiar with the name [autotag]Jordan Cornette[/autotag].  Cornette was a former Notre Dame basketball player and leads the program in blocks all-time as he played for Mike Brey and the Irish from 2001-2005.

Cornette got into broadcasting after college and has been at ESPN national for the last six years.  He served as the host of ACC Network’s pregame football show “The Huddle” the last three seasons.  Unfortunately that time appears to have come to an end.

Cornette tweeted the following on Friday:

You can’t keep a good man down and we’re certain we’ll see Jordan on a TV screen again soon.

Twitter reacts to Notre Dame’s first lacrosse national championship

Hope you love this championship as much as these people do.

If you win a national championship at Notre Dame, you’re going to be remembered forever. The 2023 men’s lacrosse team entered university immortality Monday when it defeated Duke in the national championship game. It was their first time winning the national title after two previous runner-up finishes.

Let this serve as a reminder that every athletic program at Notre Dame deserves your support and not only during moments like this. These student-athletes and coaches work just as hard as those in the football or basketball programs. This is their life, and it’s great to see that rewarded.

If you think no one cares about Notre Dame athletics that aren’t football or basketball, think again. There are so many people either employed by the university or simply a supporter of the university who were hoping to see the Irish defeat the Blue Devils. They got their wish, and they took to Twitter afterwards to show how happy they were:

Twitter reacts to Micah Shrewsberry becoming Notre Dame coach

What are your thoughts on the hire?

Since Penn State became one of college basketball’s sweethearts in March, all eyes had been on coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag]. With him needing only two years to turn around the program in Happy Valley, there was little doubt programs in need of a coach would covet him.

As fate would have it, Notre Dame was one of those programs, and Shrewsberry is an Indiana native. The stars seemed perfectly aligned.

Shrewsberry reportedly has been named the Irish’s new coach, turning down lucrative money from Penn State to stay. As you can imagine, Twitter was abuzz with this news, especially with jilted Nittany Lions fans. We’ll spare you those tweets, but we will share some that were expressed by people who have their heads on a little more firmly. The reactions range from enthusiastic to questioning whether Notre Dame has made the right hire:

Twitter pays tribute to Mike Brey after final game as Notre Dame coach

What would you like to say to the departing Irish coach?

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips presented [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] with a commemorative photo before Notre Dame’s conference tourney loss to Virginia Tech. Former Irish player [autotag]Jordan Cornette[/autotag], calling the game for ACC Network, did likewise.

It was the time for it to happen because there was a very good chance that this would be the Irish’s only appearance in the tournament, and it was. Although the Hokies were the team moving on, the significance of the Irish’s loss was not lost on college basketball fans.

No one knows where Brey will end up next, but it won’t feel the same regardless. He has become so synonymous with Notre Dame that people both part and not part of the Irish’s fan base took to Twitter after the game to express their appreciation for him. He deserves all the recognition he’s getting right now, not only for what he’s done as a coach but also for who he is as a person.

Here are only some of the tributes that have been tweeted out:

Mike Brey, Cormac Ryan, Marcus Hammond speak after Notre Dame loss

Read some final words summing up the season and a whole era of Irish basketball.

Notre Dame’s 67-64 loss to Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament signaled the end of an era. Yes, it means [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag]’s days as Irish coach are over, but it also means the end for many players on the roster, especially rotational players. Two of them are [autotag]Marcus Hammond[/autotag] and [autotag]Cormac Ryan[/autotag], players who didn’t begin their collegiate careers with the Irish but were the most impactful in Brey’s final game for the program. That allowed them to come out with Brey for the season’s last postgame news conference.

Hammond and Ryan sat next to Brey as he, among other things, called out the officials for a late lengthy review that ultimately resulted in a dead-ball technical for [autotag]Matt Zona[/autotag] that might have affected the game’s outcome. This came as the Irish were about to shoot their own free throws in a close contest. Brey has called out ACC officials before, and he apparently decided to do it one more time on his way out.

Here is what the Irish trio said after the game:

Mike Brey gives insight to recruiting new players, retaining signees

The retiring coach knows what his departure means as far as trying to keep the players making up the program’s future.

[autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] recognizes that the college basketball world he’s leaving behind is not the one he entered. More than ever, players are entering the transfer portal if they think they can thrive better elsewhere, and signees and commits can change their minds at any time. Like in Brey’s case, the coach who recruited a player often leaves before the player can arrive on campus, and that can cause the player to second-guess their decision. Add the recent NIL emergence, and it gets even more complicated.

Brey was asked about his role in recruiting and retaining players for his remaining tenure after Notre Dame’s 84-72 loss to Boston College. He was asked because the program’s future just became a more pressing issue for those who will remain in the program as well as the entire fan base. While results aren’t guaranteed, it helps to know there is at least effort being put into a process that becomes more complicated with each passing year.

Here is what Brey said:

Cornette: Tweets like Klatt’s are what’s wrong with social media

ACC Network’s Jordan Cornette continued to defense Clemson football against the comments made earlier in the week by Fox Sports Joel Klatt.  During the who In Play Cornette defended the Tigers.

“Since Clemson won their first title with Dabo and he has won two of them in 2016 and 2018, Cornetta said.  “Since 2016 Dabo verse the AP Top 25 is 23-6.  Dabo has beaten in that CFP Ohio State twice, Bama twice to win the championships.  Those are supposedly the gold standard in both the SEC and the Big Ten so I am confused there.”

The Tigers have earned respect but it isn’t always given.

“I don’t know what leg you have to stand on to disrespect a program that has the longest active win streak currently in college football, the longest active home win streak in college football and it is not like they are void of talent.  Every year this machine, machine of Clemson turns out talent.  Trevor Lawrence, DHop, DW, Christian Wilkins.  You are talking about a program that is right up there with the rest of them and has a proven body of work of doing it.  So I guess to reiterate what Packer was telling ACC PM the other day I don’t know if they will beat them this year.  But I know what they are primed to do.  To be in position to chase historically what they have been able to do.  They have played in ten college football playoff games of the 24,” said Cornette.

The comments by Klatt are what is wrong with social media according to the ACC Network host.

“And Joel if you want Tweets and Retweets and all of that stuff find a better avenue of doing it because this is what is wrong with social media right here.  Not that Elon Musk is taking it over.  That people Tweet this stuff out and it gets retweeted.  It is disrespectful to Clemson.  It is disrespectful to what Dabo has built,” said Cornette.

Dear Old Clemson has added limited edition footballs signed by the Tigers’ 2022 class.

Twitter reacts to Blake Welsey being drafted by San Antonio Spurs

What was your reaction to the news?

Notre Dame never had a player drafted by the NBA after only one season. That officially has changed with the San Antonio Spurs drafting [autotag]Blake Wesley[/autotag] with the 25th overall pick. The debate of how he will fit into Gregg Popovich’s system will last for the next few months and maybe beyond. For now, it’s time to celebrate one of the Irish’s best recent players making the leap to basketball’s highest level.

Naturally, the celebration has made its way to Twitter. Teammates, coaches and media personnel took to their accounts to congratulate Wesley as well as offer analysis about the news. Just looking at this tweets speaks volumes as to what this means to anyone who’s ever had anything to do with South Bend. Whatever happens to Wesley in the NBA, this moment always will be remembered by those it matters to.

Here are some of the best tweets about Wesley from draft night:

It’s early, but at this point in the offseason, this analyst isn’t picking Clemson to win the ACC’s Atlantic Division this season.

ESPN’s Jordan Cornette joined Kelly Gramlich and Eric Mac Lain on the Gramlich and Mac Lain podcast and said he’s going with NC State to claim the Atlantic Division crown.

Cornette’s reasoning? The fact that the Wolfpack is returning star quarterback Devin Leary, while the Tigers’ quarterback situation is uncertain with D.J. Uiagalelei and freshman Cade Klubnik competing for the starting job.

“Tell me this – I’ll make my decision after you tell me this – who’s going to be the quarterback?” Cornette asked Gramlich and Mac Lain. “Who’s honestly going to play? Are they going to have one quarterback the whole season at Clemson? Who’s going to start the first week?”

After both Mac Lain and Gramlich replied that they believe Uiagalelei will be the starter in Week 1, Cornette replied, “Is D.J. going to start Week 6?”

Neither answered yes, so Cornette quickly responded, “Give me NC State. I’m done. Give me NC State.”

“Clemson had a fine year last year,” Cornette added. “They had a good year – if they’re not Clemson. … Y’all are telling me they don’t know who their quarterback is Week 6, and Devin Leary and (linebacker) Payton Wilson are taking care of business on both sides of the football for NC State next year. No! I love you guys. Give me NC State. If you told me that D.J. would be the quarterback in Week 6, I’d give you Clemson and I’d keep it moving. I thought you guys would help me out, and you didn’t. NC State is going to win the Atlantic.”

Clemson and NC State will square off on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Death Valley. The Wolfpack defeated the Tigers, 27-21, in double-overtime in Raleigh on Sept. 25 last season.

Clemson (10-3, 6-2 ACC) finished third place in the Atlantic Division last season, while NC State (9-3, 6-2) finished second in the division behind Wake Forest (11-3, 7-1).
