Micah Potter has grown into the star of this Wisconsin team, which was evident in his outstanding 20 point outing against Louisville. Potter also leads the Badgers in scoring and rebounds this season. His efficiency and rebounding ability will be important in helping the Badgers through their tough Big Ten schedule.

Another player to look out for in this game is freshman guard Jonathan Davis, who has played extremely well coming off the bench for Wisconsin. Davis is currently fifth on the team in scoring and second in rebounds, and his role will likely increase as he becomes more comfortable with the college game.

Nebraska has had a difficult start to the season, but have been led by the tremendous play of guard Dalano Banton, who leads the Cornhuskers in rebounds, assists, and blocks. He is also second on the team in scoring with an average of 13.7 points per game. Banton and guard Teddy Allen, who is averaging 18.3 points per game this season, could be a challenge for Wisconsin.

The Badgers will look to get a good start to their Big Ten schedule against a 4-3 Nebraksa team tonight before a very important game against the No. 12-ranked Michigan State Spartans on Dec. 25.

The No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers tipped off their 2020-21 season against the Eastern Illinois Panthers tonight after what ended up being a 263-day wait since their last game.

Starting for Greg Gard’s team were five seniors–D’Mitrik Trice, Brad Davison, Aleem Ford, Micah Potter and Nate Reuvers.

That was the biggest storyline coming into the season: Head Coach Greg Gard and his team returning nearly their entire production from last year’s Big Ten regular season-winning unit.

One slept-on storyline, however, is what impact freshmen Jonathan Davis and Ben Carlson have in their first collegiate seasons. The talent and production of the senior starting five is known, and it will most likely take some underclassmen stepping up as difference makers in order to bring this team to the next level.

Well, both Davis and Carlson wasted no time making an impact in tonight’s matchup against Eastern Illinois, scoring their first points just seconds after entering the game:

Davis entered the program as a three-star recruit and was ranked as the No. 2 player in the state of Wisconsin, while Carlson came as a four-star and the No. 4 player from his home state of Minnesota.

Davis, Carlson and the Badgers will be back in action Friday night against the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions before starting their conference slate on December 21 against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Future Badgers just keep on winning. This morning, the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) named Johnny Davis the 2019-20 Mr. Basketball award winner in the state of Wisconsin.

Davis led his La Crosse Central Red Raiders to a 20-5 mark, and a 10-2 record in conference before their postseason was cut short. The Wisconsin native averaged 27.2 points per game for a team that finished 9th in the state according to MaxPreps.com rankings. The 6-4 swingman is part of a 2020 class that features five solid pieces, including his brother Jordan Davis.

Jonathan Davis has the look and feel of a player who is ready to make an impact right away. He optimizes the word smooth, with athleticism, enough size for his position, and the ability to score at all three levels. His length creates matchup problems for smaller guards, and he is an above-average finisher at the rim. Greg Gard has a player stepping into Madison that will be ready to contribute as a freshman.

There is plenty to be excited about for the future of Wisconsin basketball, and pieces like Davis, as well as the rest of the 2020 recruiting class, are major reasons why.

Jonathan Davis Signs National Letter of Intent with Wisconsin Basketball

Wisconsin Head Coach Greg Gard received Jonathan Davis letter of intent on Wednesday as Davis is a part of a five-man 2020 recruiting class.

Jonathan Davis

6’4″, 185, guard, La Crosse, Wis. (Central)

Davis held a Wisconsin offer since December of 2017 but he didn’t verbally commit to play for the Badgers until June of 2019. Davis officially became a Badger on Wednesday when he faxed in his letter of intent to play for his home state Badgers.

There were many aspects about Davis’ game that Greg Gard was drawn to but Gard appreciates and enjoys recruiting players who have played multiple sports in high school and Davis certainly fits that bill. Outside of being a standout basketball player, Davis has also excelled on the football field as he has served as La Crosse Central’s starting quarterback. The competitive nature that Davis has developed playing both football and basketball will certainly serve him well when he enrolls at Wisconsin.

Davis chose Wisconsin over other offers from: DePaul, UW-Green Bay, Iowa, UW-Milwaukee, Minnesota, Northern Iowa, UNLV, and West Virginia

Davis Accolades: Four-star recruit by Rivals … conference player of the year averaged 23 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists per game as a junior for La Crosse Central, earning unanimous first-team all-state selection and first-team all-conference honors … La Crosse Tribune Coulee Region Player of the Year in 2018-19 … as a sophomore, averaged 22.7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists per game and earned first-team all-conference and first-team all-state honors … along with brother, Jordan, helped lead Central to the WIAA Division 2 state tournament each of their three years on the varsity team, winning the state title in 2017 with current Badger Kobe King … on the football field, Davis is also a standout three-year starter at quarterback, passing for 6,572 yards and 56 touchdowns, while rushing for more than 2,000 yards and scoring another 34 touchdowns on the ground.

Gard on Davis: “Johnny is the ultimate competitor. He’s proven that on the basketball court, on the football field and in the classroom. Johnny’s ability to play and guard multiple positions is extremely valuable in today’s game. He brings a tremendous toughness and competitive spirit to both ends of the floor. His experiences as a high school quarterback will serve him well as he makes the transition to a collegiate basketball player. He has grown up watching Wisconsin Basketball and takes pride in wearing our colors. We’re excited to get to work with him and to help him reach his potential as a Badger in the years to come.”
