Former Seahawks punter Jon Ryan to raise 12th Man Flag

Former Seahawks punter Jon Ryan to raise 12th Man Flag

The most hallowed pregame tradition in the NFL is the raising of the 12th Man Flag in the south end zone at Lumen Field. Seattle sports legends, celebrities and hometown heroes have all shared in this distinct honor, but on Sunday night, the responsibility now falls to former Seahawks punter Jon Ryan.

From 2008-2017, Jon Ryan became a Seattle cult classic as one of the best punters in the NFL. However, there is one reason above all else why Ryan gets the honors tonight against the Packers: it was his trick touchdown pass in the 2014 NFC Championship that helped fuel the Seahawks’ unlikely comeback.

The Seahawks were trailing 16-0 late in the third quarter. The already slim hopes at clawing their way back into the game were fading quickly as Russell Wilson’s pass on third down fell incomplete. Seattle lined up for a field goal just to get on the board, when in fact it was Ryan who found rookie tackle Garry Gilliam for the touchdown.

Ryan’s touchdown fueled the unlikely comeback, as Seattle prevailed 28-22 in overtime to return to the Super Bowl. I know for a fact the 12th Man has not forgotten Ryan’s heroics.

The stars could be aligning a bit for the Seahawks. They are home against the Packers, in their first prime time Sunday night game in front of a crowd since 2019, and they have Jon Ryan lifting the 12th Man Flag on the 40th anniversary of No. 12 being retired.

Folks all over the Pacific Northwest better hear the roar of the 12’s tonight.

Seahawks “one-in-a-million” moments

Seahawks “one-in-a-million” moments

Fate. It favors fools, little children, ships named Enterprise, and professional football teams in Seattle, Washington. For whatever reason, the Seahawks always seem to find themselves invovled in wildly memorable moments, and  fortune seemingly smiles on them more often than not.

There are no shortage of iconic moments in franchise history, but there are a few that stand out more than others. Moments seared into our collective memory. Moments to smile on and bring up when talking (or arguing) among friends at a bar or cookout.

The Seahawks shared on their official Twitter accout some of the most memorable moments. Oddly enough, the Green Bay Packers have suffered the receiving end of a couple of these.

Now that we’ve watched this highlight, I have a question for all the 12’s reading this: which moment was your favorite? Personally, I will never forget where I was when the infamous Fail Mary occured, the reaction online, and the discourse for the rest of the week among everyone I knew in my life.

Hopefully the Seahawks can add a few more to the list during the 2024 season.

Jon Ryan makes peace with Julian Love over cigars after retirement

Former Seattle punter Jon Ryan signed a one-day contract with the team yesterday, officially retiring as a member of the Seahawks.

After the ceremony was over, Ryan got a gift from safety Julian Love of some cigars and they made peace. Watch.

This is of course a reference to Ryan’s bizarre Seahawks Way post-game tweet after the team’s Week 18 win over the Cardinals where he derided several players for smoking cigars in the locker room despite not making the playoffs. The players in question were all DBs who were celebrating the end of their season as well as the birth of Julian Love’s first kid.

Jon Ryan to sign one-day contract, retire with Seahawks today

Former Seahawks punter Jon Ryan intends to sign a one-day contract with the Seahawks today and officially retire as a member of the team.

Ryan played for Seattle from 2008 to 2018, winning a Super Bowl in 2013.

Ryan is responsible for one of the most memorable moments in franchise history. In the 2015 NFC title game against the Packers, he threw a touchdown pass on a fake field goal that sparked a rally to eventually win the game and advance to the Super Bowl.

After leaving Seattle Ryan put in one season with the Bills. Since then he’d been playing in the CFL, most recently with the Edmonton Elks in 2022.

Vets react to young Seahawks smoking cigars in locker room at season’s end

The Seahawks’ season has been over for about an hour and we already have our first controversy to tweet through.

The Seahawks’ season has been over for about an hour and we already have our first controversy to tweet through.

Observe the reaction of former Seattle punter Jon Ryan to several defensive backs smoking in the locker room following their one-point win over the Cardinals – which wasn’t enough to get them in the playoffs.

Shaking with anger seems a bit of an extreme reaction – even a bit of old man yelling out cloud energy coming from a guy who seemed pretty cool when he was playing.

In any case, some Seahawks players who are still on the team are being more understanding, although still not happy with it. Free safety Quandre Diggs says he gets the celebrating but that veterans expect more.

Bobby Wagner sounded a similar note, attributing it to youth.

Anyway, the new season of True Detective with Jodie Foster starts next Sunday about this time, and it’s supposed to be really good.

Geno Smith thrills, but some past Seahawks don’t like new Pro Bowl format

Here’s how past and present Seahawks reacted to the new Pro Bowl Games format.

The NFL finally decided to do away with the traditional “football game” at the Pro Bowl between the AFC and the NFC. This year they added some new skills competitions and turned the main event into a flag football game.

Some players appeared to enjoy it a great deal. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, for one – seemed to be having a ball as he dominated the flag football game, throwing five touchdown passes. Meanwhile, a few former Seattle players found the new Pro Bowl Games unbearably lame. Here’s how past and present Seahawks reacted to the new Pro Bowl Games format.

This Day in Seahawks History: NFC Championship Game memories

Today is the eight-year anniversary of their improbable comeback over the Packers in the NFC Championship game.

Despite all odds against them, the Seattle Seahawks made an improbable run to the playoffs this year. While Seattle’s 2022 season may be over, fans can reminisce today about another long-odds Seahawks playoff memory as today is the eight-year anniversary of their improbable comeback over the Packers in the NFC Championship game.

The Seahawks had completed a 12-4 season and once again earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC for the second straight year. On January 18th, 2015, the Seahawks hosted the similarly 12-4 Green Bay Packers. It was a rematch of their Week 1 matchup, where Seattle easily handled Green Bay in a 36-16 rout. Unfortunately, the Packers proved to be a much more potent adversary this time around.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers may have thrown two first half interceptions himself, but he was still severely outplaying Russell Wilson, who had three himself. Green Bay’s defense had Wilson completely flummoxed as Seattle trailed 16-0 at intermission. Eventually, the Seahawks found themselves on the scoreboard with under five minutes left in the third quarter, but it came via punter Jon Ryan, who threw a touchdown pass to tackle Gary Gilliam on a fake field goal.

Green Bay still remained in control and extended their lead to 19-7 midway through the fourth quarter. Wilson threw yet another pick with a little over five minutes remaining and all hope seemed lost. At that point, Wilson had only completed 8-of-22 passes for 75 yards and four interceptions.

The Legion of Boom forced a Packers punt after the interception and the Seahawks offense managed to complete their first meaningful drive of the afternoon. Wilson kept the ball for himself on a read option play at the goaline and cut the deficit to 19-14 with his touchdown.

Now, Seattle’s fate was in the hands of their onside kick team… or, more accurately, wide receiver Chris Matthews, who caught the ball as it ricocheted off the facemask of Packers tight end Brandon Bostick. Suddenly Seattle had life with over two minutes left to play! The Seahawks had completed the unthinkable, as Marshawn Lynch barreled his way in for a touchdown to give the Seahawks their first lead of the day. A successful two-point conversion from Russell Wilson to Luke Willson had Seattle leading 22-19.

Ironically, the Seahawks actually scored their comeback points too quickly, as Aaron Rodgers still had 79 seconds to drive for a game-tying field goal, which is what he did. The Packers forced overtime as both teams were deadlocked at 22-22.

Seattle won the coin toss to start overtime and the rest, as they say, is history. On the opening possession of overtime, Wilson found Jermaine Kearse for a 35-yard game-winning touchdown.

Seattle prevailed 28-22 and advanced to Super Bowl XLIX, their third appearance in franchise history. Somehow the Seahawks managed to outdo themselves in terms of a memorable NFC Championship, following their iconic 23-17 victory over the Niners the year prior.

A lot has changed in the last eight years, but the memories from January 18th, 2015 are forever woven into the tapestry of Seattle sports history and will live on as one of the greatest Seahawks wins of all time.

Seahawks legend Jon Ryan volunteers his services at quarterback

Ryan is of course the greatest and most clutch performer in playoff history.

The Seahawks need a new quarterback after agreeing to trade Russell Wilson to the Broncos. At the moment their best options to start Week 1 of the 2022 season are Geno Smith and Drew Lock – a far from ideal situation.

One Seattle legend is volunteering his services. Here’s what former Seahawks punter Jon Ryan shared on Twitter last night.

Ryan is of course the greatest and most clutch performer in playoff-franchise history, having a perfect passer rating at 158.3 and the most epic touchdown of all time.

In the regular season, Ryan completed three of four passes, totaling 54 yards and a 116.7 passer rating.

Former Seahawks punter Jon Ryan diagnosed with skin cancer

Ryan announced the cancer on a podcast in his hometown of Saskatchewan, where he plays for the Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.

Former Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan, now with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, has been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Ryan announced the diagnosis on the Growing the Game podcast, saying he had a surgery scheduled but it has been pushed back due to COVID-19.

“I’ve gone once a year to the dermatologist to get a full-body scan to get everything checked, and I have a mark on my neck they’re a little concerned about, last year they froze it off, and it grew back even bigger, so they identified that it was skin cancer,” Ryan said. “Luckily, it’s a pretty slow-moving cancer that the doctor’s very confident that he can wait until this coronavirus has swept through to be able to operate on.”

Ryan, 38, served as Seattle’s punter from 2008-2017, eventually losing his job to rookie Michael Dickson, who went on to make the Pro Bowl. Ryan eventually returned to his hometown of Saskatchewan to punt for the Roughriders, where he appeared in all 18 regular season games last year and averaged 48.8 yards per punt.

We at the Seahawks Wire wish Ryan and his family all the best in his eventual surgery and recovery.

Twitter reacts to Marshawn Lynch re-signing with the Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks brought back franchise icon Marshawn Lynch on Monday night, and Twitter exploded.

The Seattle Seahawks gave fans an early Christmas present on Monday, signing franchise icon Marshawn Lynch out of retirement.

He will join his former teammate, Robert Turbin, in Seattle’s new (old?) backfield ahead of their crucial Week 17 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

Beast Mode’s return caused quite the stir on social media. Lynch was an icon in Seattle, where he played from 2010-2015. His ‘beastquake’ run in the playoffs against New Orleans is perhaps the most iconic play in franchise history, and his goofy personality, love of skittles, and relationship with the media made him an international superstar.

Reaction on Twitter after Lynch’s signing was immediate, which is understandable after the reunion was teased nearly 12 hours earlier by Pete Carroll on 710 ESPN’s Monday morning radio show.

Fans, celebrities, athletes, and former Seahawks all jumped on social media to give their take on Lynch’s return to the Emerald City.

The Seahawks will take on the 49ers on Sunday night in what will be perhaps the most anticipated regular season game of the entire NFL season.

Kickoff is slated for 5:20 p.m. PT.
