Washington linebacker Jon Bostic reportedly suffers ‘serious’ pec injury

Washington fears linebacker Jon Bostic suffered a ‘serious’ pec injury on Sunday.

The Washington Football Team could be without one of its starting linebackers for a considerable amount of time as Jon Bostic injured his pec in the win over the Falcons on Sunday.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported there’s a fear that Bostic’s injury is serious.

Head coach Ron Rivera didn’t have updates on any of Washington’s injured players from Sunday but should during his Monday press conference.

Bostic signed with Washington in 2019 and has played in all 37 games since he signed, making 36 starts. Bostic is one of Washington’s team captains for 2021 and is a respected leader among his teammates and coaches.

Bostic is believed to have suffered the injury while attempting to tackle Atlanta running back Mike Davis early in the fourth quarter. Davis broke four tackles and scored, giving the Falcons a 30-22 lead.

If Bostic’s injury is season-ending, that would mean more snaps for first-round pick Jamin Davis. Other players such as Khaleke Hudson could also see an increase in snaps.

We’ll have more on Bostic’s status, and the rest of Washington’s injuries after Rivera speaks to the media on Monday.

LB Mychal Kendricks looking to resume NFL career; does he make sense for Washington?

Mychal Kendricks is a solid veteran linebacker who had six tackles in the playoff loss to Tampa Bay. He could be good depth for Washington at linebacker in 2021.

Free agent linebacker Mychal Kendricks was sentenced to one day in jail on Thursday after pleading guilty in 2018 to insider trading, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Kendricks also received 300 hours of community service and three years of probation. Kendricks originally faced up to 25 years in prison. The league suspended him for eight games in 2018.

The 30-year-old Kendricks spent part of the 2020 season with the Washington Football Team. He began the season with the Seattle Seahawks, going back and forth between the practice squad and active roster.

Washington signed Kendricks off Seattle’s practice squad in December. He started in Washington’s playoff loss to Tampa Bay and finished with six tackles.

Washington selected Jamin Davis in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. He will start. Cole Holcomb will also start. Jon Bostic or Khaleke Hudson will likely be Washington’s third linebacker.

Now that he is free to resume his NFL career, could Washington bring Kendricks back?

It would make sense.

Bostic is strictly an inside linebacker. Washington would like Davis to begin his career inside with Bostic in a reserve role. Kendricks could come to Washington as a backup with the potential to start. There is not a lot of starting experience beyond Holcomb and Bostic.

Kendricks has been a good linebacker throughout his career. If he is willing to return to Washington in a reserve role with the opportunity to compete, the team should not hesitate to bring him back.

Watch: Washington Football Team deal Pittsburgh Steelers first loss

A pair of field goals by Dustin Hopkins late gave Washington a victory over Pittsburgh, the Steelers’ first loss

The 1972 Miami Dolphins can pop the champagne. The Washington Football team surprised the Steelers, 23-17, on Monday. The loss was Pittsburgh’s first after 11 wins to open the season.

The game-winning score was a 45-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins with just more than two minutes left. Hopkins added another field goal from the same distance with 17 seconds left for the final score.

The first field goal was set up by a beautiful catch on a pass from Alex Smith to Cam Sims for 29 yards.

The perfect ’72 Dolphins celebrate every season when the last undefeated team loses its first game so no other team can match their mark.

On the Steelers’ next drive, Ben Roethlisberger was picked by Jon Bostic.

The last play saw Roethlisberger hit tight end Eric Ebron for 22 yards to the Pittsburgh 47 but the clock ran out as he could not get out of bounds.

Rivera says he is “concerned at the play of the linebackers” after loss to Giants

Washington’s linebacking core combined for just 18 total tackles on Sunday, and Rivera thinks their being too hesitant on the field.

Coming into Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, the Washington Football Team had one of the top defenses in the NFL, with a No. 4 ranking in DVOA and a cornerback who led the league in interceptions.

So what happened? How were the Giants able to put up 23 points and over 160 rushing yards? The answer is in the middle of the defense, and it’s something that is concerning for Ron Rivera.

“In all honesty, I’m concerned at the play of the linebackers,” Rivera said, via NBC Sports Washington. “I think it’s a group of guys that are hesitant and still aren’t pulling the trigger and letting it go and just getting downhill and making some plays.”

That group of linebackers is Cole Holcomb, Jon Bostic, Kevin Pierre-Louis, and Shaun Dion Hamilton. They combined for just 18 total tackles on Sunday and left a lot to be desired at the position. Going forward, with two former NFL linebackers now coaching the team in Rivera and Jack Del Rio, there is an assumption that things may get better, but comments like these make you think about the upcoming NFL draft, and the guy that many people are pegging Washington to select in LB Micah Parsons out of Penn State.

They need some more talent at the position, and he can bring it.

Jon Bostic fined $12,000 for late hit on QB Andy Dalton

Jon Bostic was fined $12,000 for his hit on Andy Dalton that knocked the Cowboys QB into concussion protocol.

Washington’s linebacker Jon Bostic is being fined $12,000 by the NFL for the late hit that knocked Dallas Cowboys QB Andy Dalton out of the game with a concussion a week ago.

Bostic was ejected for the rest of the game after the late hit to Dalton’s head that knocked the Cowboys QB to the turf, where he lay motionless for a couple of seconds. There was speculation after the game that Bostic could face a suspension, but it quickly became clear that a fine was all that he was in store for.

The hit on Dalton caused a bit of drama for the Cowboys, especially after head coach Mike McCarthy got on his team for not having a stronger reaction to the hit and coming to the QB’s defense.

Cowboys Zack Martin wasn’t around to protect Dalton, but he handled it

Zack Martin dishes on what his line mates learned from their failure to protect Andy Dalton

The 2020 Dallas Cowboys without Dak Prescott have lacked the kind of fire and brimstone required to not just be successful in the NFL, but to survive a season. Sure, they get paid to play a game, but showing up to a workplace that’s lost all its fun is soul-sucking. That’s where this team is. And that’s where their heads were at when Andy Dalton was smashed into the FedEx Field turf last Sunday.

There is a gaping chasm where leadership once existed in Dallas. It had fully been Dak Prescott’s team but even he doesn’t go battle by himself. His ability to rally the troops had been seen in every single game he participated in. He was always willing to put his body on the line, and in return his teammates did the same. But the teammates even he relied on when push came to shove weren’t around on Sunday. Zack Martin was asked about the lack of response to Jon Bostic’s dirty hit.

Yeah, I think we addressed it. I think it goes with what Coach McCarthy said after the game. We take a lot of pride in caring for our teammates, and obviously the reaction probably wasn’t what everyone was thinking. But I think it’s a good learning moment for those young guys moving forward. I think the big thing to get across is if there’s any doubt that we got love and have our teammates back that’s just the wrong thought. I think It’s a learning experience for those guys and if if ever comes up again I think it will be different.

Translation: that wouldn’t stand if I were on the field. And he’s right. Every team needs an enforcer or two. In the past it’s been La’el Collins and Zack Martin who have never been known to shy away from confrontation before or after the whistle. Part of it is personality, but part of it is the kind of confidence that comes with experience. Martin continued:

Put yourself in their shoes; Yeah, obviously I think young guys are worried about doing their job and there’s a lot of stuff going on out there. I don’t want to make excuses but I think it was a good learning moment for those guys.

This is not the kind of mistake that will happen twice, mostly because Martin is expected to return to the fold on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

4 players that Washington needs to try and re-sign in 2021 free agency

It’s never too early to think about free agency, and there are a number of players that Washington needs to keep around for the future.

The 2021 free agency period is still some months away, but with the bye week upon us, it’s never too early to start to develop a plan and try and figure out which players on the current roster are liable to look elsewhere in the near future. For Washington, there are a number of players whose contracts are set to expire in the next year or two, many of whom they need to try and re-sign to keep around in D.C. for the future.

Though there are still a couple of months for the team to try and figure out how badly they really need these players down the road, we’ve seen enough to know that we want them wearing the Burgundy & Gold for the next several years. Here’s our list of players we’d like Washington to re-sign this offseason.

Jon Bostic not expected to receive suspension for scary hit on Andy Dalton

Bostic will almost undoubtedly be fined for his hit on Andy Dalton, but he is not expected to be suspended at this point.

After Washington linebacker Jon Bostic put a late and slightly dirty hit on Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton late in the game on Sunday, many thought that Bostic might face a suspension, especially after being ejected from the game.

Word is now coming out that a suspension likely won’t be in order for Bostic, though it’s almost a guarantee that he receives a hefty fine from the NFL.

It was a scary hit that left Dalton motionless on the turf for a couple of seconds with his helmet knocked off, but Dalton did eventually get up and was able to walk off the field under his own power. He later was the subject of some discord in the Cowboys’ locker room, with coach Mike McCarthy a bit upset that none of his teammates rushed to defend him directly after the hit.

McCarthy: ‘Not the response you would expect,’ after Cowboys don’t defend Dalton neither does NFL

None of Andy Dalton’s teammates came to his defense after a dirty hit suffered Sunday. Their coach expected something different.

Washington linebacker Jon Bostic will catch a lot of heat this week for his illegal hit on Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton in the third quarter of Sunday’s meeting between the rival teams. He was ejected from the game, he’ll almost certainly receive a hefty fine, and he probably deserves a suspension for the head shot he delivered to a sliding quarterback.

But all of that could actually pale in comparison to the blowback that Dalton’s teammates will hear over the coming days about the hit they didn’t deliver. In the moments after the vicious cheap shot laid out their field general, not a single Dallas player came to Dalton’s defense. No retaliatory blows. No in-your-face exchanges. No pushes. No shoves. Seemingly not even a cross word as the 32-year-old passer (he’ll turn 33 on Thursday) lay motionless on the turf.

In a thoroughly disappointing season that has already seen historic lows, the Cowboys’ failure to defend their fallen teammate may have been the lowest moment of them all.

Even head coach Mike McCarthy was surprised at his players’ lack of response.

“It was definitely a hit that caused a disqualification,” McCarthy said after the demoralizing 25-3 loss. “We speak all the time about playing for one another, protecting one another. That was definitely probably not the response that you would expect.”

That’s a gross understatement. But nothing about the 2020 season has been close to what Cowboys fans expected. Dalton’s offensive mates standing around in silence after watching him get almost decapitated is just the latest manifestation of a season gone way off the rails.

As vicious as the hit was, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Monday morning that Bostic does not expect to be suspended for the play.

The hit on Dalton didn’t spur the Cowboys players to action in the moment, but it was the first thing running back Ezekiel Elliott referenced after the game.

“We’ve got to protect the quarterback better,” Elliott offered to reporters. “I’m not sure how many times he was sacked today, but we’ve got to keep him upright and clean in the pocket.”

The Dallas offensive line is in shambles and has been decimated by injury; Connor Williams served as the line’s elder statesman on Sunday. But Elliott knows that he also has a huge responsibility in pass protection. He normally prides himself on his blocking skills, but, like everyone else wearing a star on Sunday, failed to put forth his best effort.

“We’ve got to stick together during these times,” Elliott said of the season that seems to be getting worse with each week. “We’ve got to have each other’s backs.”

No one, though, had Dalton’s back after the violent hit that took his helmet clean off. And media members were quick to ask Elliott and other Cowboys players why: Shouldn’t someone have defended Dalton? Shouldn’t someone have confronted Bostic and gotten physical in return?

“I think you can say that’s fair,” Elliott admitted. “But doing that, you’ve got to be careful, because we’re already down a bunch of guys. If you go in there and throw a punch, you get kicked out of the game, you can’t help the team from the sideline. You can’t help from the team from the locker room. We’ve got to find a way to not cross that line, but we’ve still got to protect our guys.

“I honestly can’t really remember the situation that well or what exactly happened. But if you’re asking that question, I guess I do wish we would have acted stronger.”

It’s not like Bostic’s hit wasn’t clearly a flagrant cheap shot. Players weren’t bashful about labeling it as such after their showers.

“Man,” wideout Amari Cooper reflected when asked if it was a dirty hit. “Yeah, I would, to be honest. Because he was sliding. It was obvious. That player could have easily avoided doing what he did.”

But when asked if some sort of retaliation would have been appropriate, Cooper was less than definitive.

“I don’t know. I don’t know.”

Defensive tackle Everson Griffen has been in that situation before, chasing a quarterback who suddenly gives himself up. And he was sure of what he saw on the play.

“Terrible hit,” Griffen stated in his postgame remarks. “He’s going to get fined, as he should. I feel like, honestly, if you see a quarterback sliding, you’ve just got to let him go down to the ground.”

Even Washington coach Ron Rivera acknowledged the reckless play of his linebacker. According to ProFootballTalk, Rivera sought out McCarthy on the field as Sunday’s game ended to apologize.

“I went up to him and apologized to him for it,” Rivera said, as per Mike Florio. “I wanted him to know that we don’t play that way, and it’s unfortunate that it happened.”

It was unanimous that the hit on Dalton was wildly unsportsmanlike. The players and coaches, to a man, also held to the party line when they all talked- yet again- about sticking together, holding each other accountable, having their teammates’ backs, overcoming adversity, and playing for one another.

Only no one actually did it when Dalton went down.

The stunning lackadaisical response by the Cowboys players will be scrutinized and criticized by every football analyst with a microphone this week.

But will it be addressed by the Dallas coaching staff during practice?

McCarthy wouldn’t even say.

“I’ve answered the question.”

But there are obviously far more numerous and troubling questions still to be answered about the woeful 2020 Cowboys.

Mike McCarthy shames Cowboys for reaction to Jon Bostic hit on Andy Dalton

A scary late hit from Bostic knocked Andy Dalton out of the game on Sunday, and McCarthy is now questioning his team’s lack of reaction.

A scary moment took place in the third quarter of Washington’s game vs. the Dallas Cowboys when linebacker Jon Bostic put a late hit to the helmet of QB Andy Dalton, knocking his helmet off and leaving him motionless on the turf for a couple of seconds.

Dalton eventually was able to walk off the field under his own power, and Bostic was disqualified for the rest of the game, but it was a play that you never hope to see in the NFL, and one that the league has been doing everything they can to try and get rid of over the last few years.

It was also a play that Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy was a bit frustrated with, seeing how the rest of his team reacted.

Most of the attention was focused on Dalton and his well-being after the hit, but there was notably not many players that were getting in the face of Bostic, as you would usually expect to see in an NFL game. It is usually the offensive linemen who take umbrage with a late or dirty hit to their quarterback, but there was little of that on Sunday.
