WATCH: Johnnie Dixon goes up and over defender to haul in touchdown pass for Dallas

Great body control and hands here by Dixon going up and over a defender for a Dallas TD Sunday.

In case you forgot, there are some former Ohio State players still trying to impress NFL coaches enough to remain outside of the cut line for 53-man rosters due on Tuesday. One of those guys is former Buckeye receiver Johnnie Dixon.

In case you lost track of his career arc, Dixon went undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft, landed an undrafted free agent contract with the Houston Texans, but was cut and without a team when rosters had to be pared down for the season. He then landed on the practice squad for the Arizona Cardinals but an injury derailed things and he was waived prior to the 2020 season.

He was not a part of the game of football for a year before the Cleveland Browns gave him a tryout this preseason, and then later signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys. And that’s where we pick things up with Mr. Dixon.

He’s still got skills to play in the league, and those were on display Sunday when he went up and over a Jacksonville defender to haul in a touchdown pass in a red zone opportunity.

That’s a great use of not giving away the position of the ball until it’s in an area to high point and catch it. Dixon uses great body control and instincts to outduel the defender who is draped all over him.

It’s still likely still a long shot for Dixon to make it on the 53-man roster, but efforts like this certainly don’t hurt the former Buckeye’s chances.

Cowboys News: Gregory’s prize, Elliott’s bounceback, Dixon’s journey

Also, an ex-Cowboy salutes Carl Nassib’s announcement, the QB2 quandry in Dallas, throwback helmets, and fans speak out in a Cowboys survey.

The questions in Dallas still primarily surround the defense. While one outlet wonders if the Cowboys should look to keep building with the addition of a veteran free agent, another current Cowboy defender is focused on continuing the impressive comeback that began last season and earning a new contract with the club.

On the offensive side, a top playmaker is expected by one expert to return to dominating form, there’s concern over the backup quarterback position, and an undrafted wide receiver shares the unusual route he’s taken to the Cowboys squad. News: Julio Jones slams Cowboys rumor, Dak Prescott makes return

Also in Cowboys news, Jabril Cox contract details and defensive preview, Randy White remembers, and is Ezekiel Elliott the most overpaid?

Falcons wideout Julio Jones being photographed wearing Cowboys gear caused a bit of a minor stir, prompting whispers that maybe he was being traded to- or at least lobbying for a trade to- Dallas. But a Monday phone call from Shannon Sharpe of Fox Sports 1 all but registered on the Richter scale around the league. In the span of 90 seconds, Jones not only confirmed that he wants out of Atlanta, but he also dismissed the Cowboys as losers, and stated for the record that he has no interest in wearing the star.

The Cowboys nevertheless added to the wide receiver room before the day was over, providing yet another pass-catching target for Dak Prescott, who made his first appearance in a helmet and game-speed action since last October’s injury. The quarterback looks to build on his return with Tuesday’s OTA session. Contract details have been revealed for linebacker Jabril Cox, who could be the key to fixing the team’s woeful pass defense. Ezekiel Elliott is part of one of the NFL’s best rushing duos, even as one outlet pegs him as grossly overpaid. Amari Cooper could be on the verge of something big, and Cowboys legend Randy White sits down with his college alma mater. That’s all ahead in the News and Notes.

Cowboys add depth, sign new WR after recent tryout

The Cowboys have announced the signing of WR Johnnie Dixon, who played at Ohio State and has spent time with three NFL clubs.

The Cowboys’ tryout last week of Brett Hundley resulted in a signing after all. But it wasn’t the journeyman quarterback who Dallas inked to a deal on Monday.

It was one of the two guys Hundley had been throwing to.

The Cowboys announced on Monday that they have come to terms with wide receiver Johnnie Dixon. Dixon played college ball at Ohio State, where he caught 67 career passes for 1,146 yards and 16 touchdowns. He went undrafted in 2019, but spent time with the Texans before landing on Arizona’s practice squad. He worked out with the Browns this spring, but left Cleveland without a contract.

At Ohio State, Dixon was a teammate of Ezekiel Elliott in 2014 and 2015, and was voted a team captain as a senior in 2018. He helped lead the Buckeyes to three Big Ten titles and a national championship during his time in Columbus.

Dixon now joins a talented group of receivers in Dallas that includes Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, Cedrick Wilson, Noah Brown, and fifth-round pick Simi Fehoko, among others.

Former Ohio State receiver Johnnie Dixon signs contract with Dallas Cowboys

Former Ohio State wide receiver Johnnie Dixon has signed a practice squad deal with the Dallas Cowboys.

Former Ohio State wide receiver Johnnie Dixon is getting another shot to prove himself in the NFL. After securing a tryout with the Cleveland Browns during their rookie minicamp, he was not offered a contract. However, Dixon went through another tryout on Friday with the Dallas Cowboys, and this time it appears he impressed enough to ink a deal according to an announcement on Twitter Monday by his agent Jason Bernstein.

If you’ve followed Dixon’s arc at all, you know that he’s been snakebitten with the injuries during his career. He struggled mightily with knee injuries early on at Ohio State, but finally carved out a significant role with the team his final two seasons in 2017 and 2018.

He went undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft but signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Houston Texans. After they cut him, he was picked up by the Arizona Cardinals, but again, injuries kept him from getting in the mix to show what he could do.

Now, seemingly fully healthy, he’ll get another shot in Big D.

All of Buckeye Nation is pulling for you, Johnnie. Go out there and show them what you can do.

Browns Add Speed, Another Buckeye, With Johnnie Dixon Tryout

Cleveland added more speed to their wide receiver room with the tryout of former Ohio State Buckeye Johnnie Dixon.

After adding a world-class sprinter in Anthony Schwartz, the Cleveland Browns continued to add speed to their wide receiver room by giving Johnnie Dixon a tryout this weekend.

Dixon, the former Ohio State Buckeye, went undrafted in 2019 despite running an impressive 4.41 40-yard dash in the ramp-up to the NFL draft.

With the Buckeyes, Dixon had his best season in 2018 with 42 receptions for 669 yards and 8 touchdowns. He had 8 scores his junior year in Columbus as well.

The Houston Texans signed the wide receiver as an undrafted free agent but cut him before the season started. The Arizona Cardinals added him to their practice squad but he has yet to log a professional snap.

With Odell Beckham Jr. coming back from injury, Rashard Higgins, KhaDarel Hodge and JoJo Natson re-signed this offseason to go along with Jarvis Landry, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Schwartz, the Browns have a lot of competition in the wide receiver room.

Dixon’s Relative Athletic Score tells the story, his speed will be what gets him on the field, either on offense or special teams:

Johnnie Dixon lands tryout with Browns for rookie minicamp

Former Ohio State wide receiver Johnnie Dixon landed a tryout with the Cleveland Browns for this weekend’s rookie minicamp.

Former Ohio State wide receiver Johnnie Dixon is getting another chance at making an impression at the NFL level. According to the Cleveland Browns’ website, he was among 18 participants to take part in the first day of rookie minicamp.

If you’ll remember, Dixon went undrafted during the 2019 NFL draft, but landed an undrafted free agent deal with the Houston Texans but did not make the squad. He then landed on the practice squad for the Arizona Cardinals for the 2019 season before being released in September because of injuries.

At Ohio State, Dixon had to battle through numerous knee injuries before being named a team captain his senior season. He caught a total of 67 passes for 1,146 yards and 16 touchdowns as a Buckeye.

Here’s to wishing Dixon well in his quest to carve out a spot with the Browns as he continues to work his way back from adversity. What else is new?
