He played in four games for the Cardinals after signing in November.

One of the Arizona Cardinals’ many free agents this offseason is cornerback Johnathan Joseph. Will he be back in 2021?

Joseph was a late-season addition, signing in November after he was released by the Tennessee Titans.

He played in four games, playing 48 defensive snaps, and had three tackles and a pass breakup. He suffered a neck injury and was placed on injured reserve.

Joseph will be 37 years old but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him want to play another season.

Joseph knows the defensive system, having played for Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph when Joseph was his position coach with the Houston Texans, where he spent nine years of his career.

The Cardinals still are woefully short at cornerback on the roster, so a veteran player like Joseph could be nice. He might not be what he was but he is a smart player and, if he is on the roster as depth, it wouldn’t be a bad thing.

That said, at his age, it is uncertain whether the Cardinals want to bring him back.

Joseph’s 2021 return: Possible but questionable

Cardinals positional needs and review: Cornerback

A look back at the 2020 season and what could be happening this offseason at the position.

The Arizona Cardinals are in the offseason and are evaluating what to do to improve and address the roster in 2021.

As we have done previously with the quarterbackrunning backwide receiver, offensive line, defensive line positions, as well as inside and outside linebacker, we will look at each position group, how it did in 2020, who is on the roster moving forward, and what the Cardinals need at the position moving forward.

Next up are the cornerbacks.

Cardinals sign CB Johnathan Joseph; activate CB Byron Murphy, LB Devon Kennard

The Cardinals make a number of roster moves on Wednesdays.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday morning, ahead of their returning to practice to start Week 10.

They added a player, get back a pair of others and deal with some injuries.

Report: Cardinals bringing in CB Johnathan Joseph

He was recently released by the Tennessee Titans and is in his 15th NFL season.

The Arizona Cardinals have been adding players at cornerback the last few weeks. They signed veteran Prince Amukamara and then added De’Vante Bausby. According to FOX 26 sports director Mark Berman in Houston, the Cardinals could add a former Pro Bowler who knows defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

Veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph, who is in his 15th NFL season and was recently released by the Tennessee Titans, is headed to Arizona, according to Berman.

He seems to be suggesting that the Cardinals will sign him, but there is enough room for doubt that it perhaps could simply be that he is headed to the Cardinals for a visit or workout.

Joseph has 32 career interceptions and is now 36 years old. He spent most of his career with the Houston Texans and had his two Pro Bowl seasons in 2011 and 2012 when Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph was his position coach.

Cardinals starting cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick has been plagued by minor injuries but has not missed a game yet this season. Slot cornerback Byron Murphy is currently on the COVID-19 reserve.

It is something o keep an eye on in the next couple of days to see if anything more develops.

What number will Desmond King wear with Titans?

It looks like King might not get the number he wore with the Chargers.

The Tennessee Titans’ newest acquisition, defensive back Desmond King II, might be taking over the number of a recently-released cornerback.

On Tuesday, the Titans announced the release of veteran Johnathan Joseph just one day after trading for King. That means Joseph’s No. 33 is up for grabs, and it looks like King will take it.

King wore No. 20 throughout his career with the Los Angeles Chargers, but that number is currently owned by running back Senorise Perry, who is on Injured Reserve.

For now, it looks like King will be taking Joseph’s old number, as ESPN’s Turron Davenport revealed when he tweeted out a picture of the Titans’ roster.

King has yet to be designated a number on the team’s official site as of this writing, so this is all we have to go on. It’s very possible Perry gives up his No. 20 to King, but that remains to be seen.

The more important question is, when will King make his Titans debut?

Both general manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel have said that the earliest King will get into the building is on Saturday after he passes COVID-19 testing protocols, which leaves the door slightly ajar for him to play on Sunday.

However, King would be doing so with only Zoom meetings and no full practices under his belt. Still, he’ll probably be better than what the Titans were running out there before he arrived even without a lot of preparation.

Titans GM Jon Robinson talks Vic Beasley, Desmond King, much more

Jon Robinson gave some insight into the Titans’ recent moves.

Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson spoke to the media on Wednesday morning via Zoom and had a ton of topics to go over after the team made some big moves on Tuesday.

Among those moves was the decision to release cornerback Johnathan Joseph and long snapper Beau Brinkley, and the team notified outside linebacker Vic Beasley that he’d be released on Wednesday.

While it was obvious why the team made those moves, Robinson gave a little more insight into them, as well as revealing the inner-workings of what went into signing Beasley and why he was late to camp.

On top of that, Robinson shared his thoughts on the progress of 2020 first-round pick and offensive tackle, Isaiah Wilson, as well as what he thinks about outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney and the addition of cornerback Desmond King II, who was acquired via trade on Monday.

Here’s what Robinson had to say about all of those topics:

Titans release CB Johnathan Joseph, LS Beau Brinkley

The Titans aren’t sitting around and waiting for things to improve.

The Tennessee Titans aren’t sitting around and waiting for things to get better after two straight losses, but rather taking action.

The Titans announced they have released cornerback Johnathan Joseph and long snapper Beau Brinkley after both performed miserably during the Week 8 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Joseph was routinely getting picked on by the Bengals through the air on Sunday, which has become a common theme in most games this season.

Meanwhile, Brinkley botched a snap for a second straight week, which not only led to a failed extra point attempt, but also an injury to punter Brett Kern.

Joseph was signed as a free agent back in April and played in seven games (six starts) for Tennessee. He was supposed to be a reserve corner but had been pressed into more action than the Titans originally planned because of Adoree’ Jackson’s injury.

Releasing Brinkley ends an eight-plus-year tenure in Nashville during which Brinkley was one of the more dependable long snappers in the NFL.

His release is certainly more surprising than Joseph’s, as we figured Brinkley would have been given more of an opportunity to right the ship. Clearly the Titans aren’t messing around right now.

The Titans have long snapper Matt Overton on the practice squad, so one would assume he’ll get a shot to take over the job. Hopefully Joseph’s release signals that the return of Jackson is imminent.

Tennessee also made a trade for Desmond King II on Monday in order to bolster their struggling pass defense that ranks 27th in the NFL.

Titans’ Johnathan Joseph makes PFF’s list of top-25 CBs through Week 7

Joseph’s coverage numbers aren’t all that bad.

[jwplayer uiO8bQ7W-ThvAeFxT]

Believe it or not, Tennessee Titans cornerback Johnathan Joseph has made Pro Football Focus’ list of the top-25 highest-graded cornerbacks through seven weeks of the 2020 NFL season.

Per PFF’s Sam Monson, Joseph, who has shown some flashes this season but certainly hasn’t been great, cracked the top-25 list, coming in at No. 20 thanks to his overall grade of 70.8.

Here’s what Monson had to say about the ranking:

Somehow, Johnathan Joseph is still playing football at a pretty high level despite being 36 years old. This time with Tennessee, Joseph has struggled some — notably against Minnesota in Week 3, when he was torched for over 100 yards and two touchdowns — but he has made some plays of his own as well, notching three pass breakups and an interception. We have definitely reached the realm of players who are solid rather than excellent in the rankings, however.

When looking at Joseph’s coverage numbers, they are pretty impressive. The veteran has been targeted 31 times this year and has allowed a completion rate of 48.4 percent, which is lower than his two previous seasons.

However, Joseph has been susceptible to letting up big plays, as evidenced by his 16.6 yards per completion allowed, and opposing quarterbacks have posted a passer rating of 94.7 and thrown three touchdowns against him.

As Monson points out, his worst showing was against the Minnesota Vikings, and that lackluster performance has skewed his numbers a bit or else he’d be looking even better.

Overall, it has been a mixed bag for Joseph and he’s clearly not the same corner he once was, but it’s also important to note that he’s been pressed into more action than was originally planned because of injuries.

If the Titans can get healthy at cornerback at some point, Joseph will provide the kind of solid depth he was supposed to when the team signed him back in April.

Johnathan Joseph is trying to steer Jadeveon Clowney in Titans’ direction

Johnathan Joseph and Jadeveon Clowney are close friends.

New Tennessee Titans cornerback Johnathan Joseph and free-agent pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney are good friends, so it comes as no surprise that the veteran is trying to recruit his former teammate to Nashville.

After practice on Friday, Joseph said he has spoken to Clowney a few times recently, and while there wasn’t much talk about football, he is trying to steer the former No. 1 overall pick in the Titans’ direction.

Joseph and Clowney were teammates with the Houston Texans, and both are from Rock Hill, South Carolina. In a 2017 article by Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Wilson said Clowney and Joseph “have a relationship like brothers.”

“It’s great,” Clowney said. “Since I walked into the NFL, he’s been there to guide me the whole way. Every question I ask, he’s got an answer for it.

“He’s always been there. He’s always going to continue to be there. I’m glad he’s on my team. Big ups to my boy.”

Joseph is just one connection Clowney has to the Titans, as head coach Mike Vrabel was his defensive coordinator with the Texans back in 2017 — and in that season, Clowney posted a career-high 9.5 sacks.

The Titans have made it clear they are pursuing Clowney on numerous occasions this offseason, but so far the biggest fish left on the free-agent market has yet to make a decision. Perhaps Joseph can help put the Titans over the top.

Titans DB coach Anthony Midget raves about Johnathan Joseph

Veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph seems to be fitting in quite nicely with the Titans.

When the Tennessee Titans added veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph in free agency earlier this offseason, they didn’t just add a solid player, they also brought in a leader and a mentor for younger players.

During a Zoom call with the media on Thursday, Titans defensive backs coach Anthony Midget, who also spent time with Joseph during his days on the coaching staff of the Houston Texans, raved about how the veteran has fit in and what he has brought to the team.

With young corners on the roster, like Adoree’ Jackson, who is developing into a star, and 2020 second-round pick, Kristian Fulton, Joseph’s role on the team is more than just about what he does on the actual football field.

But even there, the Titans are getting a good player who can make a significant contribution during his first season in Nashville.

In 2019, Joseph posted a Pro Football Focus coverage grade of 65.0, which is impressive when you consider it was better than that of Malcolm Butler (64.2) and Logan Ryan (60.6).

Joseph can also provide good enough coverage that the Titans could consider moving Jackson to play in the slot occasionally, which is something general manager Jon Robinson floated as a possibility earlier this offseason.
