Ex-UFC title challenger John Moraga suffers boxing TKO loss on Canelo-Yildirim card

John Moraga was dropped seven seconds into the fight and then dominated until a second-round stoppage at the hands of Marc Castro.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – [autotag]John Moraga[/autotag] isn’t finding any luck in boxing.

Moraga, a former UFC flyweight title challenger, suffered a second-round TKO loss to 21-year-old prospect Marc Castro on Saturday’s Canelo-Yildirim card at Hard Rock Stadium. The result put Moraga at 1-3 as a professional boxer.

Moraga, 36, was dropped seven seconds into the bout and then out-boxed for the majority of Rounds 1 and 2. In the second, Moraga had moments landing a few solid shots, but he was dropped twice by Castro, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Moraga made his name in MMA, having competed in the UFC from 2012 to 2018. His last MMA fight was in August 2018 when he fell short to current UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo by TKO.

During his UFC run, Moraga went 8-6. He picked up notable victories over Wilson Reis, Justin Scoggins and Dustin Ortiz. Moraga fought for the UFC flyweight title in 2013, losing to then-champion Demetrious Johnson by armbar submission.

John Moraga details ‘surprising’ UFC release, move to ARES FC

At one point, John Moraga was a UFC title challenger. Now he finds himself outside of the promotion, looking in.

[autotag]John Moraga[/autotag] was once a UFC title challenger. Now he finds himself outside of the promotion, looking in.

A flyweight fighter, Moraga (19-7) was released from the UFC in early 2019 along with a handful of his fellow 125-pounders.

“It was very surprising, but it unfolded it the way it did,” Moraga told MMA Junkie in a recent interview. “I was released last February. I don’t know. They kept me on the roster for six months. Then, I got my release paperwork. … I think I just got caught up in the flyweight chaos that was happening. That situation wasn’t good for me. The timing of everything – it is what it is.

“I was 3-1 my last four. The last guy I lost to would be a champ right now if he had made weight. I’m trying to get back there.”

Approximately eight months after his release, Moraga resumed professional combat sports competition – but not in a cage. Moraga delved into boxing, where he defeated Brandon Foss by second-round TKO.

“I’ve been training with pro boxers for the last couple years,” Moraga said. “My boxing skills have really improved a lot. The opportunity just presented itself. Boxing is kind of weird. It’s hard to get fights. There was just an opportunity. It was kind of short-notice, but we were already kind of training for a fight. We were in shape, and we said let’s do it. We might do more of that if that’s the only thing that we can get it – just to stay active in the meantime.”

After his boxing match, Moraga signed with rising international MMA promotion ARES FC, an organization he thinks has a lot of potential.

“They sent me a message,” Moraga said. “They reached out to me. I was interested right away. They have a lot of potential. They’re trying to do it real big in Europe. They were the ones who made the circumstances right for me to go ahead and feel comfortable enough to sign with them.”

Despite COVID-19 concerns postponing ARES FC 2, Moraga’s promotional debut against fellow UFC vet Hector Sandoval (15-4) is still on tap, for now. The event was originally scheduled to take place April 3, but is now expected to take place Oct. 30, instead.

“He’s a tough opponent,” Moraga said of Sandoval. “He’s a UFC vet. I thought it was a good opportunity for me to go in there and show I can still do what I do against these higher level guys. It’s whatever. I’m not set on that opponent. I’m just set on getting back in there.”

Senegalese powerhouse ‘Reug Reug’ brings the muscles to Brussels for ARES FC 2

Senegalese heavyweight Oumar “Reug Reug” Kane is back, and he’s looking to hand an undefeated Russian prospect the first loss of his career at ARES FC 2.

Senegalese heavyweight wrecker [autotag]Oumar Kane[/autotag] – better known by his fighting nickname, “Reug Reug” – is back, and he has his sights set on an undefeated Russian.

Kane (1-0) kicked off his professional MMA career in spectacular fashion at ARES 1 as he threw his opponent Sofiane Boukichou around the cage before finishing his man via TKO early in the second round.

Now “Reug Reug” is ready to return, and the 27-year-old powerhouse will take on undefeated opposition in the form of Russian heavyweight [autotag]Ivan Romanov[/autotag] at ARES 2 at the Forest National-Vorst Nationaal arena in Brussels, Belgium on April 3.

Romanov (5-0) picked up a hat-trick of victories in 2019, but his fight with Kane represents his first against an opponent with a winning record. There’s a fair chance it’ll be the first time he’s faced a man with the sort of wrestling power “Reug Reug” possesses, too.

The two heavyweights will go toe-to-toe in Brussels on a card that features a clutch of familiar names to hardcore MMA fans.

Belgian middleweight favorite [autotag]Maaren Wouters[/autotag] (11-7) will take on French UFC veteran [autotag]Nordine Taleb[/autotag] (15-7), while former UFC flyweight title challenger [autotag]John Moraga[/autotag] (19-7) takes on another former UFC athlete, [autotag]Hector Sandoval[/autotag] (15-4).

Also added to the card is another former UFC athlete, heavyweight [autotag]Luis Henrique[/autotag] (12-6), who will look to bounce back into the win column after his split-decision loss to KSW heavyweight champion Phil De Fries in September 2019. The Brazilian will take on Lithuanian [autotag]Teodoras Aukstuolis[/autotag] (11-5).

But, despite the pedigree of the fighters being added to the card, there’s a fair chance the fight that will garner the most interest is the one featuring the hulking 1-0 man-mountain from Dakar.

Ex-UFC fighter Nordine Taleb to headline ARES FC 2 vs. Maarten Wouters

UFC veteran Nordine Taleb will headline ARES FC 2 vs. Maarten Wouters in Brussels, Belgium.

UFC veteran [autotag]Nordine Taleb[/autotag] has found a new home.

Taleb (15-7) has signed with new Afro-French MMA organization ARES FC and will be headlining April’s ARES FC 2 in Brussels, Belgium, when he takes on [autotag]Maarten Wouters[/autotag] (11-7) in a middleweight bout.

Frenchman Taleb compiled a 7-5 record with the UFC, scoring wins over the likes of Li Jingliang, Erick Silva and Danny Roberts. In his first post-UFC contest, abd what could be final fight of his career, Taleb heads into enemy territory to take on Brussels native Wouters,

Wouters has lost three of his last four but boasts a 90 percent finish rate. He takes on his most notable name yet in Taleb in what represents a massive opportunity for the Belgian on home soil.

In the co-main event, a pair of ex-UFC flyweights will throw down, when former UFC 125-pound title challenger [autotag]John Moraga[/autotag] (19-7), takes on Team Alpha Male’s [autotag]Hector Sandoval[/autotag] (15-4).

ARES FC 2 takes place on April 3 at Forest National Arena in Brussels. The event is expected to stream on UFC Fight Pass.
