Giants injury report: John Michael Schmitz, Jason Pinnock not practicing

New York Giants rookie center John Michael Schmitz and safety Jason Pinnock did not participate in the team’s walkthrough on Wednesday.

The New York Giants returned to the field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 18 game against the Philadelphia Eagles — their regular season finale.

Similar to a week ago, the Giants opted to go with a Wednesday walkthrough as opposed to a full practice.

“We’re going to do similar to what we did last week, which will be more of a walkthrough,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

The bad news was that two players were unable to participate in the walkthrough, indicating they are unlikely to play on Sunday afternoon.

“Pinnock will not do the walkthrough and John Michael won’t do the walkthrough,” Daboll said. “It’s more of (Pinnock’s) toe than it is his foot so we’ll see how it goes this week.

“Lower leg, ankle, kind of got leg-whipped a little bit in the game so we’ll see where (Schmitz) is at. Sore today.”

The Giants’ full (projected) Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL John Michael Schmitz (lower leg), S Jason Pinnock (toe)

Limited participant: CB Detone Banks (shoulder), LB Carter Coughlin (shoulder), CB Darnay Holmes (foot), QB Tyrod Taylor (back)

Full participant: N/A

Studs and duds from Giants’ Week 17 loss vs. Rams

Here’s a look at the studs and duds (and studly duds) from a 26-25 loss for the New York Giants against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17.

The New York Giants entered Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams as 5.5-point underdogs and with nothing to play for, having been eliminated from playoff contention a week ago.

However, you wouldn’t have been able to tell by how hard the Giants fought for all four quarters. There were many self-inflicted wounds but their effort can not be questioned.

Unfortunately, for a team that is already shorthanded and personnel-deficient, those added unforced errors were too much to overcome. And while they hung in with the high-powered Rams, they ultimately fell, 26-25, on a missed field goal with only seconds remaining.

Here is a look at some of the studs and duds (and studly duds) from the Week 17 defeat.

Giants vs. Rams: 5 biggest storylines for Week 17

The New York Giants face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17. Here are the five biggest storylines to follow for this contest.

The New York Giants (5-10) host the Los Angeles Rams (8-7) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on New Year’s Eve afternoon in Week 17 of the 2023 NFL season.

Here are five storylines we are following this week.

Giants injury report: 7 players limited in practice

The New York Giants listed seven players as limited in practice on Thursday and 13 on the total report.

The New York Giants returned to the field on Thursday for their first full practice ahead of a Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Rams — one day removed from a walkthrough.

The injury report was lengthy to open the week and that trend continued 24 hours later.

While everyone practiced on at least a limited basis, several key players remained limited — seven in total with 13 players listed on the official injury report.

Giants injury report: Dexter Lawrence, 4 others miss practice

New York Giants coach Brian Daboll said everyone would participate on Wednesday but five players, including Sexy Dexy, ended up sitting out.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Rams at MetLife Stadium.

Because the Giants played on Christmas Day and are on a short week, head coach Brian Daboll limited the team to a walkthrough. They will conduct full practices on both Thursday and Friday.

Coming out of Monday’s game, the Giants were relatively healthy despite a few players (Darren Waller, Justin Pugh) getting banged up. Daboll said everyone would participate on at least a limited basis.

“We’re doing a walkthrough today so everybody will be participating in the walkthrough,” Daboll said.

The lie detector test determined that was a lie.

Several players sat out on Wednesday and several more were limited, including punter Jamie Gillan, who suffered a groin injury two weeks ago and a knee injury in the Giants’ loss to Philadelphia.

“We’ll see tomorrow but trending in the right direction,” Daboll said of Gillan.

The Giants’ full (projected) Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: CB Detone Banks (shoulder), TE Lawrence Cager (groin), NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DT A’Shawn Robinson (back), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee)

Limited participant: RB Saquon Barkley (elbow), OL Ben Bredeson (quad), P Jamie Gillan (groin/knee), CB Adoree’ Jackson (ankle), OL Justin Pugh (elbow), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (quad), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), TE Darren Waller (knee)

Giants’ Brian Daboll, players furious with NFL’s horrid officials

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and his players, including Tyrod Taylor, are furious with NFL officials for another mess of a game.

The New York Giants will likely receive an apology letter or two (or three) from league offices this week after their officiating crew, led by Ron Torbert, cost Big Blue with multiple bad calls or non-calls in Week 16.

At one point during the 33-25 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Brian Daboll exploded on the referees in a now-viral moment.

Officials penalized rookie center John Michael Schmitz for a false start on a key fourth down play even though it wasn’t actually a false start. In fact, it should have been called a defensive offsides.

Even those on the FOX broadcast questioned the call, including rules expert Dean Blandino.

But that wasn’t the only miscue for the officials on the day. There were several other instances of bad calls that were very obviously skewed in the Eagles’ favor. Among them was a non-call on a clear defensive pass interference late in the game.

There was another arguable DPI committed on the final play of the game that, again, went uncalled. The Giants were left in utter disbelief as quarterback Tyrod Taylor protested to the officials.

“I think there were some flags that could have been thrown, but that is not our place,” Taylor said after the game. “That is not fair. If it’s a call, call it. It shouldn’t be a last-play mentality. If it’s a call, and if it’s blatant, then it should be called. It should be honored like it is the first play of the game.”

Fearing that he might get himself fined, Daboll was far more subdued when discussing the officials. And by subdued, we mean he refused to answer any questions.

“I’d say, any official questions, you can ask those guys,” Daboll said.

Daboll repeated the line, “You can ask those guys” at least three times when pressed on the multiple bad calls.

The officials aren’t why the Giants lost the game but the Eagles certainly didn’t need the help. And it’s also not a new issue for the NFL, who have been dealing with poor officiating for several years.

However, the problem seems to be getting worse league-wide and not better. Monday afternoon’s game is just the latest example of referees attempting to steal the primetime spotlight and dictate the outcome of a game.

Giants injury report: Dexter Lawrence continues to miss practice

New York Giants NT Dexter Lawrence missed his second consecutive practice on Thursday due to a hamstring injury.

The New York Giants held a brief practice on Thursday morning before players and staff were permitted to leave early and attend their respective Thanksgiving celebrations.

“We’ll bump it up a little bit,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Thursday’s practice. “I talked to the captains last week relative to how they wanted to approach the week, if they wanted to push it up and practice on Tuesday, give them off on Thursday.

“They wanted to keep it a normal week. So, we’ll push up the time that we start, and then they’ll get out a little bit earlier than they would. Fairly normal.”

East Rutherford facilities were closed to the media, so there were no press conferences or Zoom calls held, while practice was closed.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), OL Evan Neal (ankle)

Limited participant: WR Darius Slayton (neck), LB Bobby Okereke (rib/hip), DL A’Shawn Robinson (back), CB Tre Hawkins (shoulder)

Full participant: OL John Michael Schmitz (finger), RB Saquon Barkley (rest), LT Andrew Thomas (knee), RB Eric Gray (ankle), OL Tyre Phillips (knee), WR Sterling Shepard (hip), CB Adoree’ Jackson (concussion), S Bobby McCain (illness)

Giants injury report: Eric Gray designated to return from IR

New York Giants RB Eric Gray has been designated to return from IR while NT Dexter Lawrence was a non-participant with a hamstring injury.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 12 game against the New England Patriots at MetLife Stadium.

Before practice, head coach Brian Daboll met with reporters to update the status on several players, including wide receiver Darius Slayton and left tackle Andrew Thomas, who is reportedly playing on a sprained MCL.

“He won’t practice today,” Daboll said of Slayton, indicating he could play on Sunday.

Additionally, the Giants announced that rookie running back Eric Gray has been designated to return from injured reserve (IR) with his 21-day window officially opening.

Linebacker Bobby Okereke also revealed that he’s dealing with a broken rib and dislocated finger, noting that the latter hurts worse than the former. Both he and Slayton intend to play.

Finally, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was a surprise addition to the injury report. He generally has a veteran rest day on Wednesday but was listed as a non-participant due to a hamstring injury this week.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: WR Darius Slayton (neck), LB Bobby Okereke (rib/hip), NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), RB Saquon Barkley (rest), OL Evan Neal (ankle)

Giants-Jets Week 8: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 8 game against the New York Jets. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants collapsed in soul-crushing fashion on Sunday afternoon, falling to the New York Jets, 13-10, in overtime despite having multiple opportunities to secure a victory.

Not only did the Giants lose the game, but they also lost quarterback Tyrod Taylor and tight end Darren Waller to injuries that may keep both out for a while.

Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ most recent loss.

Offensive snaps: 75
Defensive snaps: 64
Special teams snaps: 37

Punter Jamie Gillan took 17 special teams snaps (46 percent), which is a remarkable number that you rarely see in the NFL. It speaks to the offensive futility.

That futility is also highlighted by wide receiver Sterling Shepard taking a grand total of zero snaps. He was active and in uniform, but you’ll note that his name does not even appear above. Giants wide receivers combined for zero receptions on three targets for -1 yard.

Speaking of wide receivers, one of the Giants’ big offseason additions, Parris Campbell, took just three offensive snaps.

Finally, in his return from a shoulder injury, rookie center John Michael Schmitz took all 75 of the team’s offensive snaps.
