Three Vols earn NCAA Tournament tennis bids in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Three Tennessee men’s tennis players have earned bids to the 2024 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.

The tournament will take place May 20-25 at Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Johannus Monday qualified for both singles and doubles. In doubles, he will team with partner Angel Diaz. Shunsuke Mitsui also earned a spot in the singles tournament.

Monday, a two-time SEC Player of the Year, was one of 12 automatic qualifiers in singles and is a No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. He is 22-2, playing in the No. 1 singles spot for Tennessee and has compiled a 17-1 record against ranked opponents this season.

Mitsui earned an at-large berth. He is 9-2 this season against ranked opponents.

In doubles, the duo of Monday and Diaz is one of four tandems to earn a 5-8 seed in the draw. The team has posted a 17-5 record and is 10-2 against the nation’s ranked doubles teams.

Johannus Monday named to SEC All-Tournament Team

Tennessee’s Johannus Monday named to SEC All-Tournament Team.

Tennessee senior Johannus Monday was named to the Southeastern Conference All-Tournament Team.

Monday recorded two victories during the SEC Tournament.

He defeated Florida’s Jeremy Jin, 6-2, 7-5, in the tournament singles quarterfinals. Jin entered the SEC Tournament ranked No. 52 in the nation.

Monday also won in the semifinals, defeating No. 15 Toby Samuel of South Carolina, 6-1, 6-3.

Monday went 17-1 against top ranked opponents during the 2023-24 season, He is also 23-2 in dual matches.

Monday and Angel Diaz also defeated Florida’s Aidan Kim and Nate Bonetto, 6-1, in doubles competition.

Tennessee awaits its NCAA Tournament seeding during the selection show on April 29. The show will be streamed on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. EDT.

Vols defeat Georgia in SEC opener

Tennessee defeats Georgia in SEC opener.

No. 5 Tennessee (12-3, 1-0 SEC) defeated No. 43 Georgia (4-5, 0-1 SEC), 6-1, Friday at Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The Vols won the doubles point by sweeping the two completed matches.

Johannus Monday named SEC Player of the Week.

Johannus Monday was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Monday has compiled a 7-0 record in singles competition. He opened the 2024 dual meet season with three straight set victories and has a 4-0 record against ranked opponents.

Monday recorded a three-set victory over Michigan’s Gavin Young to clinch the Vols’ 4-3 victory at Goodfriend Tennis Center. Monday defeated Young, who was ranked No. 9 in the nation, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4.

He also teamed with Angel Diaz to earn a 6-2 doubles victory over Young and Nino Ehrenschneider against the Wolverines.

No. 6 Tennessee will next play Sunday at No. 5 TCU (3-0) in Fort Worth, Texas. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. EST.

No. 6 Tennessee (4-0) defeated No. 14 Michigan (1-1), 4-3, Thursday at Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The contest was tied, 3-3, and came down to the final match, No. 1 singles.

The Vols clinched the match after Johannus Monday defeated Michigan’s Gavin Young, in three sets, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.

Pat Harper and Johannus Monday conclude NCAA doubles competition.

NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships are taking place May 22-27 at USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Florida.

Tennessee student-athletes Pat Harper (graduate student) and Johannus Monday (junior) concluded doubles competition on Wednesday.

Monday and Harper, the nation’s fourth-ranked doubles team, lost to Louisville’s 12th-ranked pairing of Natan Rodrigues and Fabien Salle, 4-6, 7-5, 0-1(6-10), in the round of 32.

Harper concludes his collegiate career with a 96-38 (.716) overall doubles record. He ends his career as No. 10 on Tennessee’s all-time doubles wins list.

Harper came to Tennessee in 2018 from St. Peters Lutheran College in Queensland, Australia.

Two Vols advance in NCAA singles championships

Two Vols advance in NCAA tennis singles championships.

Two Tennessee men’s tennis players advanced in the NCAA singles championships Monday.

Graduate student Adam Walton and sophomore Johannus Monday advanced with first-round victories at Khan Outdoor Tennis Center in Champaign, Illinois.

Walton, the nation’s third-ranked singles player, defeated VCU’s Charles Burtimon, 6-4, 6-0. Burtimon entered the match as the No. 90 player in the country.

The two players held serve through the first four games of the opening set before Walton earned a break at deuce to take a 5-4 lead.

Monday won in three sets in the first round, defeating Cornell’s Alafia Ayeni, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Monday, the No. 10 player in the country, trailed 4-1 in the first set and was down a service break before coming back to win the opening set.

Walton and Monday will play in Tuesday’s second-round matches and both would earn All-America honors with wins.
