No. 6 Vols suffer first loss of spring tennis season

Horned Frogs edge Tennessee, 4-3, in men’s tennis.

No. 5 TCU (5-0) defeated No. 6 Tennessee (7-1), 4-3, Sunday at Bayard H. Freeman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Vols earned the doubles point against TCU by winning two of three doubles matches.

Tennessee lost its first match of the 2024 spring season as Shunsuke Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka recorded singles victories for the Vols.

No. 6 Tennessee (4-0) defeated No. 14 Michigan (1-1), 4-3, Thursday at Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The contest was tied, 3-3, and came down to the final match, No. 1 singles.

The Vols clinched the match after Johannus Monday defeated Michigan’s Gavin Young, in three sets, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.

Shunsuke Mitsui named to SEC All-Tournament Team

Tennessee’s Shunsuke Mitsui named to SEC All-Tournament Team.

Tennessee sophomore Shunsuke Mitsui was named to the SEC All-Tournament Team, the conference announced.

Mitsui won two singles matches playing at the No. 4 spot on the Vols’ singles ladder.

He also teamed with Emile Hudd to claim a victory at No. 2 doubles. Mitsui is 20-4 in doubles competition this season.

In singles, Tennessee defeated Ole Miss, 4-0, in its first tournament match. Mitsui outlasted Ole Miss’ Lucas Englehardt, 6-2, 7-5, clinching the match for Tennessee. It marked the fifth time this season Mitsui clinched a match for the Vols.

In doubles against Ole Miss, Mitsui and Hudd defeated the tandem of Englehardt and Isaac Stromberg, 6-0.

Mitsui (18-6 in singles) also defeated Kentucky’s Taha Baadi, 7-5, 6-3.

Shunsuke Mitsui named SEC Freshman of the Week

Tennessee freshman Shunsuke Mitsui wins award for the third time.

Tennessee men’s tennis player Shunsuke Mitsui has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.

Mitsui, who hails from Shizuoka, Japan, achieved the honor for the second consecutive week and for the third time this season.

This regular season, Mitsui was only one of two players in the SEC to win 20 singles matches in dual competition and was the only freshman to accomplish that feat in 2021-22.

He had three wins last week as Tennessee defeated Alabama and No. 28 Auburn.

Mitsui won a pair of singles matches to improve to 20-3 overall in dual singles play this season. He has a 10-1 mark in SEC play and has won 10 of his last 11 matches.

In doubles, he teamed with Emile Hudd to defeat the Crimson Tide’s tandem of Enzo Aguiard and Juan Martin, 6-2, on the No. 2 rung of the doubles ladder.
