Joe Theismann might have revealed the Washington Football Team’s new name early

The announcement is in two days …

The Washington Football Team will officially have a new name this week with the announcement and uniform release scheduled for Wednesday. It’s capping off a multiyear rebranding, which saw much of the fanbase come to embrace the wonderfully generic Football Team name.

But it’s pretty clear that the organization will go in a different direction, and Joe Theismann might have inadvertently spoiled the surprise a couple days too soon.

Just as the potential new name — the Washington Commanders — leaked last week in a domain name transfer, Theismann seemingly confirmed the new name would be the Commanders in a Monday appearance on CBS Sports Radio’s The D.A. Show.

Joe Gibbs talks Washington’s new name on the anniversary of team’s last Super Bowl win

Joe Gibbs spoke on Wednesday, talking about the 1991 Super Bowl champions, Ron Rivera and the pending name change.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Joe Gibbs is the greatest coach in Washington history. Joe Gibbs is the most successful individual in Washington’s franchise history. And Joe Gibbs is the most beloved person in Washington history.

On the 30th anniversary of Washington’s last Super Bowl win, the legendary head coach joined “BMitch & Finlay” on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., and looked back at Washington’s 1991 team.

There were plenty of good stories from Gibbs. He joked with BMitch (Brian Mitchell), then a second-year running back and return man. He told stories on some of Washington’s greatest characters. And, in typical Gibbs fashion, he mentioned the words “super smart” and “guts” on more than one occasion.

He joked about the Detroit Lions — a 12-4 team in 1991— that Washington beat by a combined 86-10 score in the team’s two games, including the NFC championship. Detroit’s coach at the time, Wayne Fontes, was a good friend of Gibbs, and Gibbs would apologize to him when the two talked, telling him, “you guys bring out the best in us.”

While Gibbs was his usual happy self, he also made sure everyone knew that team was much more than him or Washington’s high-powered offense. Gibbs praised the players, defensive coordinator Richie Petitbon, special teams and the fans.

And, before Gibbs finished his interview, Finlay asked him if the upcoming name change was bittersweet. Gibbs offered a thoughtful and, as expected, positive response.

I think it’s two things: Will it be a little bit, bittersweet? Yes. Because everything I had, I grew up in North Carolina, and the only football team we could get on TV was the Redskins. I grew up kind of never thinking I’d ever have a chance to coach them. Everything in my house is Redskins. And I think everybody there that is a fan, that’s part of our history. But also, I think for our fans and all of us that love the Redskins, and I feel like I am the biggest Redskins’ fan in the world. Whatever that name is, we are Washington football fans, and we are going to get behind it.

Gibbs also discussed head coach Ron Rivera:

And I think right now with Ron being there, I really feel like Ron is the coach that can get us going. We just need to get the things around him that help him. Think about all the things they’ve went through the last two years.

Finally, Gibbs spoke on his love for the franchise, where between two stints, he spent 16 years as the head coach.

We’re gonna rally, all of us, whatever the name is, we’re gonna rally behind that name. We are Washington football fans. I think it’s the greatest sports franchise in the world. I believe that. I think it’s got a solid base of fans that love that team. It’s the only thing that unites that city. It’s the greatest city in the world to be a part of. I love that.

This almost 30-minute interview was a welcomed trip down memory lane for longtime Washington fans. The past 30 years have caused much pain and anguish, leaving many to abandon the franchise they once loved. But the one thing any current or lapsed Washington fan can agree on is their love and respect for Gibbs.

“We’re all excited about the new name,” Gibbs said. “Let’s go.”

We agree, Coach. Let’s go.

Throwback Thursday: A look back at Chiefs’ lone loss to Washington

#TBT To the #Chiefs’ lone loss to the Washington Football Team, a clash between Joe Theismann and Bill Kenney in 1983. | from @TheJohnDillon

An absolutely crucial game for the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6, their tilt against Washington Football Team could be a make-or-break moment in their 2021 campaign. Sitting below .500 with a paltry 2-3 record, Sunday’s game against Washington will be their chance to get back on track after losing three of their last four contests.

Intrigue abounds from multiple angles with the Chiefs’ season in the balance, from Andy Reid facing one of his former assistants in Ron Rivera, to the rebuilt offensive line’s matchup against a stout Washington front four. There’s also a history between the teams that goes deeper than the blockbuster 2018 Alex Smith trade.

Kansas City has an all-time record of 9-1 against Washington, and they’ll look to earn their 10th win in their first game at FedEx Field since 2013. The lone blemish against Washington was a 27-12 loss in 1983 when Bill Kenney and Joe Theismann were under center for a mid-September clash that was as weird as they come. The Chiefs scored all 12 of their points in the game in the first half on the strength of four Nick Lowery field goals, including three in the second quarter. Kenney had 330 yards on 46 attempts for Kansas City but was held scoreless in the loss, throwing two interceptions. Kenney was also sacked five times in a defensive showcase for Washington that gave them the momentum needed to pull out the win.

Theismann was far from perfect in that particular game too, managing to avoid being sacked, but only completing just 12-of-27 passes for 153 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Washington’s second-half surge where they scored 27 unanswered points to put Kansas City away marked the first time they had beat the Chiefs after two losses in their initial meetings in the 1970s.

This is by no means the most ingrained rivalry in the NFL, but the Washington Football Team is sure to be hungry for their second win against Kansas City to help get the historical matchup back to respectable on paper. Without their starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, Washington will have an uphill battle against 2018 MVP Patrick Mahomes, but should have ample opportunities to gash the Chiefs’ defense in the run game.

Joe Burrow’s torn ACL adds to long list of horrific leg injuries for QBs at FedEx Field

A torn ACL suffered by Joe Burrow on Sunday is just another instance in a long line of severe leg injuries suffered by QBs at FedEx Field.

Do you believe in curses? I don’t mean curses as in a hex or a spell that someone puts on another person, but rather a curse in the sense of something bad happening, over and over again, in the same spot, to similar people, at coincidental times.

The public is likely split on this. In our world of conspiracy theories and superstition, many people will likely wave off the notion of a curse and explain it as nothing more than coincidence. However, others (me included) look at connected patterns and occurrences and can’t help to dive a bit deeper. All of that leads me to say this:

I think that FedEx Field is cursed for quarterbacks.

I know that this is nothing new, as a simple Google search of ‘FedEx Field Turf’ will send you into an overwhelming rabbit hole of mismanagement and poor upkeep. However, the injury suffered by Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow on Sunday afternoon just adds to the list of promising young quarterbacks who have suffered serious setbacks while playing on the grass in D.C. Here are some notable instances:

Notre Dame vs Texas rematch: CBS projects iconic schools meet in bowl season

According to bowl projections from CBS Sports, the Texas Longhorns and Notre Dame are on a collision course for a NY6 bowl.

The Texas Longhorns. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish. These two football programs are among the most prestigious in college football history. Texas and Notre Dame rank fourth and fifth respectively in all-time wins. The two have 1,824 wins combined. A bowl game between the two schools brings back some memories of their battles at the Cotton Bowl.

January 1, 1970 at the Cotton Bowl immediately comes to mind. Trailing 17-14 with 6:52 left in the fourth quarter, James Street led the comeback. Texas was trailing after Joe Theismann led the Irish 80 yards to take the lead. Street found Cotton Speyrer to get the ball to the two-yard line. A run by Billy Dale gave Texas the win. They were named the Coaches Poll National Champions. It wasn’t until the 2016 thriller that the Longhorns would beat Notre Dame again.

It took overtime in 2016 to decide a winner between these two teams. Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes sealed the deal when he dove into the endzone to cap off a 50-47 victory.

Could we see this matchup again for the 13th time in their history? CBS Sports thinks so in their latest bowl projections. The Longhorns and Fighting Irish would meet in the Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. These two schools have met in the historic bowl game three times. Texas won the first matchup and fell in the next two.

A trip to North Texas likely means the Longhorns finished second in the conference to Oklahoma to earn a NY6 bowl berth. It would be a welcomed sight but we know the Longhorns are aiming to knock Oklahoma down a peg. Oklahoma is projected to battle Alabama in the Rose Bowl. We know how well that went last time.

Big 12 Projections:

  • Rose Bowl- Oklahoma vs Alabama
  • Cotton Bowl- Texas vs Notre Dame
  • Alamo Bowl- Iowa State vs SMU
  • Liberty Bowl- TCU vs Mississippi State
  • Sun Bowl- Kansas State vs Pittsburgh
  • First Responder Bowl- Texas Tech vs Rice
  • Cheez It Bowl- Baylor vs Louisville
  • Cactus Bowl- West Virginia vs Texas State
  • Texas Bowl- Oklahoma State vs Missouri
  • Frisco Bowl- Kansas vs Arkansas

Looks like everyone is going bowling this year.

Joe and the Jets: Flacco, Namath share name and illustrious Super Bowl honor

Jets quarterback Joe Flacco and Joe Namath now have much more than just their namesake in common.

Quarterbacks named Joe have had their fair share of success playing in the Super Bowl.

Four quarterbacks with the name have at least one Super Bowl ring. Hall of Famer Joe Montana is a four-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Super Bowl MVP award-winner. Joe Theismann won Super Bowl XVII with the Washington Redskins in 1983.

The other two Joes have direct ties to the Jets.

Joe Namath delivered Gang Green its first and only Super Bowl title in 1969 by famously upsetting the Baltimore Colts, who were favored by nearly 20 points in Super Bowl III. He also earned Super Bowl MVP honors.

Forty-four years after Namath helped the Jets make history, Joe Flacco made his own in Super Bowl XLVII, leading the Baltimore Ravens to a win over the San Francisco 49ers and earning MVP honors. After the game, Flacco signed a football that featured the signatures of every Super Bowl-winning quarterback. He requested to sign his name near that of one of his childhood idols. Ironically, his signature also wound up next to Namath’s — one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise Flacco now plays for.

“I asked him where Joe Montana’s signature is, and I found that,” Flacco told Comcast SportsNet Baltimore in 2013. “And Joe Namath happened to be above it, so I put myself right between them. I thought that was pretty cool.”

Flacco will not be tasked with leading the Jets to the Super Bowl as Namath once did. Instead, he will serve as the backup and defacto mentor to Sam Darnold — the quarterback the Jets hope can lead them to the promised land once again.

Until last week, the only thing Flacco and Namath had in common was their namesake and status as Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks with Super Bowl MVP honors to boot.

Now, both have ties to the green and white.

Joe Theismann says that Trent Williams can never be a Redskin again

Theismann knows that the relationship with Trent Williams has gotten to the point of no return, and he will never play in Washington again.

As the 2020 offseason has continued on, one thing that has yet to be resolved for the Washington Redskins is the Trent Williams situations. It is a relationship that has been dinged up over the past couple of years, and as of now, it is yet to be repaired.

Though Williams is still a member of the Washington Redskins, and the team is treating him as such until a trade is made, it seems hard to believe that the seven-time Pro-Bowler will be suiting up in a Redskins uniform anytime soon. At this point, former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann doesn’t see it ever happening.

“In Trent’s situation, it was bad. There was no way he [can] be a Redskin again,” Theismann said, via NBC Sports Washington. “The relationship [has] become so toxic, it just [can’t] continue in that vein.”

We’ve seen the Redskins rid of a couple of toxic relationships already this offseason, though neither ever rose to the level of contention that has been seen with Williams. Cornerback Quinton Dunbar was traded to the Seattle Seahawks after he was unable to agree with the team on a contract extension, and safety Montae Nicholson was released after a host of off-field issues became prevalent. It is clear that Ron Rivera and the Redskins have little interest in mending relationships that seem to have a grim future, so it won’t be a surprise if, and when, the news breaks that Williams has been traded.

‘That position belongs to Chase Young’: Redskins legend weighs in on Tua Tagovailoa buzz

Redskins legend Joe Theismann weighed in on the Tua vs. Haskins debate, and it all has to do with missing out on Chase Young for him.

Every day now there seems to be a new report regarding what the Washington Redskins will or should do with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Regardless of whether or not a new report has surfaced, there for sure is always somebody of note giving their two cents about what the Redskins should do.

The latest person to offer up his opinion is former Washington great Joe Theismann. On Friday, Theismann went on with 106.7 The Fan and stated that he thinks it would be absolutely crazy for the Redskins to pursue any option other than OSU’s Chase Young.

They are out of their minds if they think that Tua will go No. 2 to the Redskins. That position belongs to Chase Young. Think of it: We’re going to a 4-3 defense. You have Jonathan (Allen). You have Daron (Payne). You have Matt (Ioannidis). You have (Montez) Sweat. You have (Ryan) Kerrigan. You have a rotation. Now, you add, which I think is the best athlete in the draft, to our defensive line. Jack Del Rio is sitting there going, ‘Yeah I can do something with this. I’m pretty excited about what we have.’ That is the only way the Redskins should go. Any other way they go would be a major surprise and it wouldn’t make sense. I think Chase Young is the guy there.

This, of course, is in response to a report that the Redskins plan to meet with Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa ahead of the draft, and some believe that they will legitimately consider drafting him over Young, pitting him against Dwayne Haskins in a QB battle for the ages this summer.

We don’t yet know quite enough to confidently predict what the Redskins will do, but it feels like they will lean towards agreeing with Theismann. Only time will tell.
