LSU target JJ Harrell pushes back commitment after picking up Alabama offer

Harrell has changed his visit schedule and will no longer make a decision on Monday. He has already taken an LSU visit this month.

One of LSU’s top targets in the 2024 class was set to make a decision following the weekend, but now it seems like JJ Harrell’s plans have changed.

After picking up some new offers — most notably from Alabama after coach Nick Saban visited the Sardis, Mississippi, prospect at his school, North Panola High School — Harrell will no longer commit on Jan. 30, he told On3’s Sam Spiegelman.

Harrell has already taken official visits this month to LSU and Tennessee, and he was set to lock his commitment down after trips to Florida State, Ole Miss and Auburn this weekend. Instead, he will now take an official visit Friday to Mississippi State before taking a trip to Tuscaloosa, not Auburn, on Saturday.

The four-star receiver is rated as the No. 277 player in the country in the 2024 class, per the On3 Consensus Rankings. He has no Crystal Ball predictions from 247Sports, but Ole Miss is a 50.3% favorite to land him per the On3 Recruiting Predictions Machine.

LSU reportedly prioritizing 4-star WR JJ Harrell in 2024

Harrell had positive things to say about LSU’s coaching staff.

[autotag]JJ Harrell[/autotag] is a 2024 6-foot-2, 185-pound, four-star wide receiver from Sardis, Mississippi, where he plays for North Panola High School.

He recently released the list of his top eight schools and the LSU Tigers made the list. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and his staff are all-in on Harrell as they try to take him away from Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Harrell currently has no Crystal Ball projections, but Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss are a 51% favorite to land him per On3.

Harrell was asked about his thoughts on LSU prior to his visit to Baton Rouge in January. Per On3’s Sam Spiegelman (subscription required), what sets LSU apart from other schools for him is that they care about more than just what happens on the field. They care about his grades and his goals in life.

The 2024 recruiting class for LSU is ranked as the No. 1 class nationally right now with eight commitments, including a wide receiver, [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag], from Langston Hughes (GA).

LSU makes the top 8 for 4-star 2024 receiver

LSU made the cut for one of 2024’s top wide receivers in JJ Harrell.

While schools make their final pushes for 2023 prospects, the 2024 recruitments are beginning to heat up.

According to 247 Sports, LSU’s 2024 class is currently the country’s best and LSU is positioned well with plenty of its top targets too. One of those targets is four-star wide receiver [autotag]J.J. Harrell[/autotag]. He recently dropped his top eight, and LSU made the cut.

247 Sports has yet to enter any Crystal Ball predictions for Harrell, but On3’s prediction machine currently has Ole Miss and Mississippi State leading for the Mississippi native. LSU’s 2024 class already has two pass catchers with receiver [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag] and tight end [autotag]Tayvion Galloway[/autotag].

LSU also remains in a good spot with Louisiana tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag].

There isn’t a flurry of Louisiana pass catchers in the 2024 class, so Brian Kelly and staff will have to look elsewhere. LSU has a solid group of receivers in its 2023 class, headlined by hometown kid [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag].
