Former Ohio State guard Jimmy Sotos to play with Ex-Pats in TBT

There will be at least one former Buckeye taking part in the TBT this season. #GoBucks

In case you missed the news over the last couple of days, the Ohio State alumni team, better known as Carmen’s Crew, will not be taking part in this year’s TBT (The Basketball Tournament). But that doesn’t mean there won’t be any former Buckeyes in the winner-take-all summer basketball tourney.

In fact, according to an announcement on Twitter, former guard Jimmy Sotos has agreed to play with the Ex-Pats, a team that represents former Patriot League players. And if you’re wondering why Sotos, an OSU player agreed to play with the team, it’s because of his time with Bucknell before transferring to Ohio State — Bucknell being a Patriot League team.

In fact, with the Bison his senior year, Sotos was a starter and averaged 11.5 points a game.

Once at Ohio State from 2020-to 2022, Sotos suffered through injuries and inconsistency but it’ll still be fun to watch what he does in TBT. Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye.

Ohio State basketball guard Jimmy Sotos out for remainder of year

Ohio State basketball guard Jimmy Sotos has been lost for the rest of the year to a shoulder injury and will undergo surgery.

When Ohio State tips off against Iowa on Thursday, it will again be without backup point guard Jimmy Sotos. Only this time, the transfer from Bucknell will be out the entire year according to head coach Chris Holtmann. The OSU head coach broke the news right off the bat on a Zoom update Wednesday.

Sotos injured his shoulder diving for a loose ball against Rutgers on January 9th and suffered a separated shoulder. There was hope that he could get back healthy enough to play but instead will have surgery to repair the shoulder.

“We thought he might be able to come back and play, but right now, it’s not going to be possible,” Holtmann said to reporters. “I think he wanted to try and give it a go, but he’s not going to be able to do it.”

For Sotos, it had to be a disappointing blow, and Holtmann said he was very emotional when the injury occurred.

“If you saw him after the Rutgers game, he was emotional,” Holtmann said. “We had a moment there just because he was emotional. I think he knew at that point it could be over. We were trying to exhaust every option to continue the season.”

Ohio State got point guard C.J. Walker back a few games ago so the hit won’t be nearly as big, but it still hurts when it comes to depth, and if Walker has further issues with the ligaments in his non-shooting hand.

That means OSU will still have to rely on guys like Duane Washington and Justice Sueing to provide some extra bodies to bring the ball up when Walker needs a blow.

Ohio State basketball transfer Jimmy Sotos’ waiver approved

Ohio State basketball head coach Chris Holtmann announced that guard Jimmy Sotos received a waiver to play immediately from the NCAA.

The Ohio State basketball program got some very good news on Thursday. According to an announcement from hoops head coach Chris Holtmann, Bucknell transfer Jimmy Sotos has received a waiver to play immediately.

The decision is a welcome one because the Buckeyes are suddenly looking rather thin at the ball-handling spot. Earlier in the fall, Holtmann said that Harvard graduate transfer Seth Towns will most likely not be ready to go at the start of the season as he continues to rehab. Additionally, in a release yesterday, the Buckeye program announced that point guard Abel Porter has had to end his basketball career due to medical reasons.

“Jimmy Sotos, his waiver was approved,” said Holtmann through his Twitter account. “We got word on that this morning. So we appreciate the work of our compliance and the NCAA’s consideration.”

As a reminder, Ohio State’s initial request for an exception for Sotos was denied, but it appears as though the appeal on the decision was successful.

Sotos himself was excited and took time to make note of the exciting news on his own Twitter account.

Sotos averaged 11.5 points, 3.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds for the Bison last season. And now, instead of getting into the mix next year, he’ll enter the fray this winter.

Ohio State basketball transfers get their jersey numbers

Ohio State basketball announced the jersey numbers of transfers Seth Towns, Abel Porter, and Jimmy Sotos Monday.

It’s been a year of transition for the Ohio State basketball roster. Gone are the Wesson brothers. In addition, talented freshmen Alonzo Gaffney and D.J. Carton left the program after just one season in Columbus. In the case of Gaffney, he is reportedly looking at professional options, while Carton transferred to Marquette.

Because of the departures, head coach Chris Holtmann and staff had to fill some holes with non-traditional methods. He went after some transfers and landed three of them. And now, all three have their jersey numbers according to a release on Twitter Monday.

That’s right. The trio of Seth Towns, Abel Porter, and Jimmy Sotos can now begin advertising to family and friends what they’ll be performing athletic feats in on the banks of the Olentangy.

Seth Towns is a Columbus native that went to Harvard to get smarter. He is a graduate transfer and will have two years of eligibility left. He was the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2018 and will wear No. 31, the same digits he paraded around in with the Crimson.

Abel Porter will come to Ohio State from Utah State as another graduate transfer with just one year remaining. He can practice drawing the No. 0, which is a lot like drawing a circle, so all good there. He wore the No. 15 as an Aggie.

Lastly, Jimmy Sotos is on his way from Bucknell as an undergraduate transfer. He’ll have to sit out one year unless he gets a waiver from the NCAA before he dons the number numero uno. As a bison, he ran around in the No. 4.

Chris Holtmann officially announces additions of transfers Jimmy Sotos and Abel Porter

Head Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann has officially announced the additions of transfers Abel Porter and Jimmy Sotos.

The roster of the Ohio State basketball team is now officially complete — at least barring any more unforeseen departures. That’s because head coach Chris Holtmann announced the additions of transfers Jimmy Sotos and Abel Porter Saturday afternoon.

Porter recently played for Utah State and will have one year of eligibility beginning in 2020-21. Sotos elected to transfer following his junior season at Bucknell and will have to sit out next year before he has one year of eligibility beginning in 2021-22.

Holtmann appeared to be excited about both additions.

“We look forward to adding Abel and Jimmy to our program,” Holtmann said in a release from the university. “Abel has played an important role on a very good Utah State team. He has a toughness and unselfishness to his game which will be valuable to our team next year as a fifth-year senior. His ball handling, versatility and shooting will be important for depth at our guard positions.

“Jimmy has good size, shooting ability and is a terrific passer,” Holtmann continued. “He will sit out the upcoming season and provide experience in the 2021-22 season at the guard position. I know he is excited about using the year off to learn our program and grow as a player.  Jimmy and Abel both have come from winning, well-coached programs and we are excited about their additions to our program.”

Porter will provide some immediate need and depth at the guard position, likely often spelling C.J. Walker next season. He could take on a role very similar to that of Andrew Dakich when he transferred from Michigan in Holtmann’s first season in Columbus.

And while Sotos will have to sit out a year, it’ll give him a chance to improve, assimilate into the program and be ready to contribute the following season.

Bucknell guard Jimmy Sotos to transfer to Ohio State

Ohio State got good news today from Bucknell guard Jimmy Sotos. He announced his decision to play for the Buckeyes for his senior year.

Well, that was fast. The wholesale changes on the Ohio State basketball roster continue with the announcement of Bucknell guard Jimmy Sotos’ decision to transfer to the Buckeyes.

The news comes just a day after the shocking revelation that starting guard Luther Muhammad will enter the transfer portal and leave Ohio State. Add that to D.J. Carton’s decision to also transfer, Alonzo Gaffney’s announcement to go pro, and Kaleb Wesson declaring for the NBA draft, and all of a sudden this team is going to look entirely different next season.

But back to Sotos. He’s a veteran ball-handler that will have to more than likely sit out a year because of the NCAA’s undergraduate transfer rules. Depending on how things go though, sources have told Eleven Warriors that the coaching staff could look to explore getting a waiver to make the six-foot, three-inch point guard immediately eligible.

At Bucknell last season, Sotos led the Bison in points (11.5) and assists (3.9) and averaged 32.1 minutes per game. He shot 40.6 percent from the field, including 37.1 percent from beyond the arc.

Sotos will have one year of eligibility remaining and chose Ohio State over Butler, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Xavier.
