The New York Giants have added wide receiver Chase Cota and center Jimmy Morrissey to the roster on reserve/future contracts.

The 24-year-old Cota went undrafted last spring out of Oregon.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder who began his college career at UCLA, spent time on the practice squads of the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, and Houston Texans this season.

Morrissey, 25, was a 2021 seventh-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders out of Pitt. He was signed off the Raiders practice squad by the Houston Texans and spent the majority of the last two seasons on their practice squad.

Texans sign C Jimmy Morrissey to active roster, add G Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms to practice squad

The Houston Texans have signed C Jimmy Morrissey to the active roster and added guard Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans fortified their center position by looking at what they already have in the building.

The Texans signed center Jimmy Morrissey from the practice squad to the active roster. Morrissey was active for five games last season as a rookie and started in four of them. The former Las Vegas Raiders 2021 seventh-round pick’s playing time last year came due to a knee injury to starting center Justin Britt.

The Texans filled their vacancy on the practice squad by adding former Jacksonville Jaguars guard Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms, who was also in the offseason program and training camp with the Texans.

Texans release C Jimmy Morrissey

The Houston Texans have released former Las Vegas Raiders center Jimmy Morrissey as they finalize their 53-man roster.

The Houston Texans are going with a different reserve center behind starter Justin Britt.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans have released Jimmy Morrissey.

The Texans initially signed Morrissey off the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad last October due to injuries to Britt. However, Morrissey didn’t challenge Britt for the starting job and was also in a roster battle with Scott Quessenberry.

Wilson also reports that the Texans may look to add Morrissey back to their practice squad. However, with the lack of depth at center across the NFL, Morrissey could see himself in another city.

Report: Texans to re-sign C Jimmy Morrissey, WR Davion Davis

The Houston Texans intend to re-sign center Jimmy Morrissey and receiver Davion Davis when the new league year and free agency begins.

The Houston Texans liked what they saw from youngsters at the bottom of the roster and want to give them another shot to progress with the organization in 2022.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Pro Football Network, the Texans intend to re-sign center Jimmy Morrissey and receiver Davion Davis once the new league year starts at 3:00 p.m. Central Time on March 16.

Morrissey was active for five games in 2021 with four starts. Morrissey played 258 snaps on offense and six special teams snaps. Houston signed the former 2021 seventh-round pick off the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad in mid-October as starter Justin Britt battled with a knee injury.

Davis was active for two games, starting in one of them. The former Sam Houston State and Hutto High School product caught a pass for 17 yards. Davis saw 21 snaps on offense and five on special teams.

Texans rookie Jimmy Morrissey ready to start at center against the Chargers

Houston Texans rookie center Jimmy Morrissey is ready to assume the starting duties against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16.

The Houston Texans have had to battle positive results for COVID-19 as they gear up to take on the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

The Texans will be without starting center Justin Britt as he has been added to the COVID-19 reserve. The absence gives an opportunity for rookie Jimmy Morrissey to return to the starting lineup for the first time since Week 12.

Even though Morrissey hasn’t been the starter for the past three weeks, he has nevertheless prepared to take over as the starter.

“My preparation throughout the week stays the same whether it’s virtual or not,” Morrissey said. “It’s just a little bit different watching it on an iPad than actually being able to watch film in the facility on the monitor with the clicker in my hand. The way I’m going to approach it is the same as I approached my other three starts and how I approached playing in college, too, making sure I watch all of the certain third down packages, short yardage goal line and doing my own scouting report. It stays the status quo. It just stinks that this is where we’re at and we have to do it on virtual, but it is what it is and we’ve got to make sure we can play on Sunday.”

Morrissey has three career starts logged from Weeks 9-12. The Texans signed the Las Vegas Raiders sixth-round pick from Pitt off their practice squad in Week 7 as they worked through injuries to the offensive line at that time.

Since Morrissey’s last start, the 6-3, 305-pound offensive lineman has become more familiar with the playbook.

Said Morrissey: “I got comfortable once the third game came around with the playbook, really. I have been with the team for longer than a couple weeks now. I feel confident out there and my relationship with all the guys on the offense has been great so far. Really, the key takeaways from those games were little techniques, things that I need to tweak a little bit that got me beat a couple times when I was playing.”

If Morrissey starts, it will give Houston a rookie duo at quarterback and center as Davis Mills will make his ninth start at signal caller.

Can Jimmy Morrissey develop as the Texans’ starting center?

The Houston Texans started a seventh-round rookie at center in Week 9. Can Jimmy Morrissey become the long-term answer at center?

Injuries have compelled the Houston Texans to play younger players, and Week 9 was no exception when the club turned to Jimmy Morrissey.

The Texans signed the seventh-round rookie from Pitt off the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad in October. Morrissey saw his first action of the year against the Miami Dolphins as he started and played 69 snaps in the 17-9 loss at Hard Rock Stadium.

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor gave a glowing endorsement of the 6-3, 305-pound interior offensive lineman.

Jimmy’s been great,” said Taylor. “Very, I wouldn’t say outspoken, just a confident guy. He’s confident in his ability. He’s picked up the offense in the short time that he’s been here. He’s going out there and he’s competing, can’t ask for anything more.”

Morrissey’s football smarts have also been evident to coach David Culley.

“I’ll tell you what, he’s jumped in there and done a heck of a job for us,” said Culley. “He’s a very smart kid. He hasn’t had a bunch of playing time, but he went in there and upheld his end very, very well in the last game, making calls and doing all those types of things. We’re very comfortable with him in there.”

The Texans have been looking for solutions at center since Justin Britt was placed on injured reserve ahead of the club’s Week 8 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams. Justin McCray started that game at center as he did Week 6 at the Indianapolis Colts, Britt’s first missed game of 2021.

Taylor believes that Morrissey is, “a guy that’s competing and knowledge of the things we are putting in each week.”

Said Taylor: “Each week he gets the chance to gain experience and he’ll continue to step up to the challenge each week.”

Morrissey could get the nod once again as Houston faces the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Nissan Stadium.

Texans sign C Jimmy Morrissey from Raiders practice squad

The Houston Texans have added to their center depth by signing Jimmy Morrissey off the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad.

The Houston Texans made official Wednesday the signing of rookie center Jimmy Morrissey from the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad.

According to coach David Culley, the reason they signed Morrissey is to hedge their bets in case center Justin Britt can’t go against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7.

“The injury with Britt is always concern and obviously we needed to get some more depth in here incase he doesn’t progress like we need him to progress to play,” said Culley. “But yes, that’s the reason we brought him in.”

Britt is battling a knee injury that kept him out of Week 6’s 31-3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Justin McCray started in Britt’s place.

Morrissey is a seventh-round pick from Pitt. In signing Morrissey off the Raiders’ practice squad, he will count against the Texans’ active roster for at least three weeks, and he will receive a guaranteed three-week salary, even if he is released before those three weeks are over.

Raiders begin draft pick signings with C Jimmy Morrissey

Jimmy Morrissey

On Monday, the Raiders got the ball rolling on locking in their rookie class. They started at the bottom signing their final draft pick, a seventh-round pick in center Jimmy Morrissey.

The 230th overall pick out of Pittsburgh, Morrissey was a four-year starter for the Panthers. The former walk-on won the center job as a redshirt freshman in 2017 and never looked back. He finished his career at Pitt with 47 starts over four seasons.

By 2019, he had been named first-team All-ACC, a feat he reached both of his final two seasons of college ball. A two-year run in which he gave up just two total sacks.

Morrissey did all this while being a four-time member All-ACC Academic team.

With the Raiders trading away Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson. the position could be wide open. Former undrafted Andre James returns with a leg up on the job, but he will have to compete with incoming free agent Nick Martin and Morrissey.

Center prospects for Cowboys to consider in each round of 2021 draft

Tim Lettiero reviews seven centers who look to battle for a starting or roster spot in each round in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.

Travis Frederick’s retirement was a roster travesty, to say the least. One of the most underappreciated players of this generation, he left the Dallas Cowboys with a massive hole right through the heart of the offensive line. While trustworthy Joe Looney stepped in for a bit and did his job, the Cowboys looked elsewhere, drafting Tyler Biadasz in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. Biadasz was solid in the starts he was given but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to live up to the hype of fellow former Wisconsin Badger.

Depending on how the staff viewed Biadasz’ limited reps, there is potential for a new starting center or simply some competition in the near future. Here are some options worth a look in each round of the upcoming draft:
