Power Ranking the LSU Tigers head coach candidates

Let’s power rank the head coach candidates

Plenty of chatter going on with the LSU Tigers and their hunt for the next head coach.

Most are just potential candidates stating they love their current jobs and don’t have interest, but who believes head coaches when it comes to open jobs during the season? What exactly are they supposed to say? There could be truth to their statements for some. At this point, all conversations are being done by agents and not the coaches.

With all that being said, we look to power rank the most talked-about candidates. This isn’t pointing to who we believe will become the next LSU head coach but where they stand in the priority.

Plus predictions for how it all ends for each one of them.

Devil’s Advocate: What if it isn’t Mel Tucker or Jimbo Fisher?

Just hear me out for a second…

Despite the fact that there is a game on Saturday against ULM, the only hot topic surrounds the head coaching search. While no one really has a gauge on what will transpire, we continue the conversation on potential candidates.

Depending on which outlet you read, you could get a completely different list of guys so we will go through the most likely. Many believe that the hire will be flashy or a big fish. But what if it isn’t one of the two most talked-about guys?

What if LSU strikes out on top candidates?

(Bill Feig/The Advocate via AP)

This is the first major hire as the LSU athletic director for Scott Woodward. That isn’t to downplay bringing in multi-national champion-winning coach Kim Mulkey to run the women’s basketball program. No one is saying that Jay Johnson wasn’t a big hire for the baseball program, especially after he signed the No. 1 rated recruiting class.

When it comes to football it is a completely different animal, especially in the SEC. The LSU football program is one of the top 10 most valuable in the country, so nailing this hire is key. Especially after the Les Miles debacle and what they went through with Ed Orgeron. Sure they won national championships but they have left negative impacts on the culture of the Tigers. Based on the number of dollars it is costing LSU  to get rid of Orgeron, they can’t miss. But what if they don’t get the “big fish.”

Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports recently laid out the top two candidates.

CBS Sports previously reported Michigan State coach Mel Tucker would be interested in LSU. Athletic director Scott Woodward continues to search for a monster hire. His presumed No. 1 target, Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher, reiterated his intention to stay with the Aggies on Monday.

Reports have surfaced that Tucker has a long-term deal in hand to stay with Michigan State. Fisher continues to state that he isn’t going anywhere.

Just spit ballin’ here, but let’s go through some of those other names.

Paul Finebaum on Jimbo Fisher’s denial “nobody believes coaches anyway”

Finebaum has some thoughts on Jimbo Fisher and LSU.

During an appearance on ‘Keyshawn, JWill, and Max’, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum discussed the College Football Playoff rankings and the rumors of Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher.

Former NBA player turned analyst Jayson Williams asked Finebaum about Fisher’s comments regarding the LSU rumors in which he stated “I’m not going anywhere.” Finebaum had some advice for the Aggies head coach.

“I think he’s dumber that he keeps talking about a job that he probably should ignore,” Finebaum said. “Quit talking about it already. All you have to say is I’m not going anywhere. First of all, nobody believes coaches anyway JWill. I mean do you? I have had coaches lie to my face, you’ve had coaches lie to your face.

So you don’t have to explain, it’s really not necessary. Or you do what Mike Tomlin did a couple of weeks ago and end it in about 15 seconds. Instead, this is about the third time that Jimbo Fisher has doubled down. And I give him credit he brought into the conversation. I know all of you think we coaches lie. Go ahead and bury the lede right there Jimbo. ”

Finebaum went on to say that it seems unlikely but you can’t deny the connection between athletic director Scott Woodward and Fisher. Regardless of what everyone wants, this story just isn’t going to go away.

What industry experts are saying about the LSU head coaching search

Mel Tucker? Matt Campbell? Lincoln Riley? Dave Aranda? Billy Napier? A lot of names to sort through.

Everyone on the Bayou has one question on their mind. Who will be the next head coach of the LSU Tigers, and that is a loaded question.

You know the big names being tied to the job. Is it really coming down to Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher or Michigan State’s Mel Tucker? Are there more names involved?

Fisher denied any speculation about the LSU job in his press conference in which he said “I’m not going anywhere.” Tucker is perceived to have an offer in his hands to stay in East Lansing for the foreseeable future. Is it true that neither is looking at LSU or are we getting some misdirection?

We look at what industry experts and insiders are talking about.

Jimbo Fisher continues to deny any interest in LSU

Jimbo Fisher continues to receive questions about the LSU job.

To no one’s shock, the rumors of Jimbo Fisher to LSU won’t seem to go away. That is exactly what happens when we have seen this movie before. Athletic director Scott Woodward was able to convince Fisher to leave Tallahassee for College Station. They had a relationship from Woodward’s first tenure at LSU as the Chancellor’s Assistant to the Athletic Department until 2004. He took on a role with Washington before ultimately becoming the athletic director.

Once again Fisher was asked about the possibility of him returning to the Bayou.

“We’re gonna recruit an unbelievable class this year. So I’m the dumbest human being on God’s earth to recruit all these guys to A&M so I can go across over there and go play against them.” – Jimbo. Fisher on LSU Rumors

Another nondenial denial for Jimbo Fisher. Not to say what he said doesn’t have merit. It could be entirely true for all we know, it is just that we have seen this pattern of behavior so many times before.

If he was hired by the LSU Tigers following the regular-season finale on Nov. 27, that would give him two weeks to get them to flip to the Tigers before the early signing period. Players should make their decision to commit to a particular school but we all know better than that. More often than not they are committing to a particular coach.

It isn’t out of the question for something like this to transpire. While the name of Fisher seems to be linked to LSU with every head coaching vacancy in the last decade, it remains to be seen if he will bite. Until the Tigers actually name the next head coach, nothing is off the table.

Kickoff time and TV network revealed for LSU vs Texas A&M

We now know when the LSU-Texas A&M game will kick off.

The LSU Tigers will have another night game in Death Valley as they are set to host UL-Monroe for their final nonconference game of the 2021 season. Looking ahead to the season finale, we have the Tigers hosting the Texas A&M Aggies. This past week they fell to Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. This coming Saturday they will play Prairie View for Senior Night.

We now know what time the game is set for the Aggies and Tigers on Senior Day in Death Valley. According to this release from the SEC, they will also play a night game.

No surprises here as the two will kick it off at night in Death Valley. LSU is looking at likely needing a win to make bowl season. They have to beat both ULM and Texas A&M. They are heavy favorites against the Warhawks.

For Texas A&M it is about getting a better bowl bid, they were on the outside looking in for the SEC title game and a potential New Years Six appearance. The loss to Ole Miss sealed their fate in that regard. Could this also be the final game between the Aggies and Tigers with Jimbo Fisher on the sidelines for the enemy?

Insider reports have stated that LSU athletic director Scott Woodward hasn’t given up on the idea of bringing the former LSU offensive coordinator back to Baton Rouge. Just another storyline to monitor. What we do know is that this will be the final regular-season game under head coach Ed Orgeron.

LSU Morning Rush: LSU-Alabama viewer numbers, coaching carousel updates

Coaching carousel and viewership notes from LSU-Alabama.

The top stories from around the web involve the LSU Tigers from Yahoo Sports and ESPN. Pete Thamel gives you one name to watch as the Tigers chase down their next head coach. Not to be outdone by a report breaking down how many fans tuned into the LSU-Alabama showdown in Tuscaloosa.

No. 1 target identified by Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports

C. Morgan Engel-USA TODAY Sports

What Thamel Says…

The LSU job is the most attractive on the market. And that’s not expected to change, regardless of any other movement. Until another coach is walked to the podium at the news conference by athletic director Scott Woodward, it’s safe to project Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher as the target here. That’s always been Woodward’s dream candidate, and his history of paying historic amounts for Fisher is the best empirical evidence of that desire. Who from there? The names are all familiar – James Franklin, Luke Fickell, Dave Aranda, Lane Kiffin and Mel Tucker. If it’s not Fisher, the name will be big and the price tag expensive. Expect the LSU-Texas A&M game to end the season in Baton Rouge to be a quintessential SEC spectacle. – Pete Thamel on LSU and Jimbo Fisher

That goes differently than what Dennis Dodd recently said about who he thinks LSU should and will hire.

LSU-Alabama game is the most-watched game since…LSU-Alabama in 2019

Gary Cosby Jr.-USA TODAY Sports

According to a press release from ESPN, the LSU-Alabama matchup was the most-watched game since these two teams met in 2019.

The most-watched game of the weekend on ESPN networks was LSU at Alabama (7 p.m. ET, ESPN), averaging 5 million viewers – the most-viewed college football game on cable this year. The primetime presentation was the top game in Week 10 among key male and adult demos (18-34, 18-49, 25-54). The audience was up 18 percent from the same matchup in 2020 and peaked with 6 million viewers from 10-10:15 p.m. in the final minutes of the game.

Who should LSU hire, who will they hire? CBS analyst weighs in

Who will LSU hire? Who should they hire? Is it the same answer?

The coaching carousel got off to an early start with multiple coaches being relieved of their duties before we even hit Nov. 1.

It started with the USC Trojans firing Clay Helton just two games into the season following an embarrassing loss to Stanford. Helton already found a new job as he was hired by Georgia Southern for the 2022 campaign. Southern fired their head coach Chad Lunsford and have played four games under interim head coach Kevin Whitley.

The LSU Tigers joined the carousel following the victory over the Florida Gators on Oct. 17. The timing was odd considering they just beat their cross-divisional rivals but the conversations started after Kentucky blew the doors off the Tigers in Lexington a week prior.

Plenty of names have been thrown about, we even came up with our own list of potential candidates. With names such as Jimbo Fisher, Mel Tucker, James Franklin, and Billy Napier being thrown about, who should they hire? CBS college football analyst Dennis Dodd weighed in.

Who should be the guy?

Could LSU still go after Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher?

“Scott Woodward is not giving up”

As soon as the rumblings started with the job security of Ed Orgeron, eyes immediately looked to the west. More specifically to College Station and former LSU assistant Jimbo Fisher.

Of course, there is history with Fisher and LSU, he was the offensive coordinator for the national championship team under Nick Saban. He also has ties with current athletic director Scott Woodward, who brought him to Texas A&M from Florida State.

It is quite simple to connect the dots here. Given the huge extension that Fisher just received, is it still possible for it to transpire? There is no buyout clause with the Aggies, but Texas A&M certainly has the backing to money whip any deal that LSU and Woodward bring to the table. Fox Sports analyst and The Athletic insider Bruce Feldman still believes that Fisher is in play.

“From what I’m hearing from people around LSU is that Scott Woodward is not giving up easily. And he feels like he may be able to pull Jimbo Fisher again even though the A&M people are like ‘no, that’s not happening.’ So we’ll see how that plays out.” via On3 Sports

Fisher has already refuted any rumors. “I love it here,” Fisher said. “I plan on being here and fulfilling my contract. I love everything about this place. I love being at A&M.” Put that down as a nondenial denial.

Feldman also mentions Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker, a name we have hit on repeatedly. Seems pretty clear that Woodward and the administration are looking at coaches with ties to Alabama’s Nick Saban. That could eliminate several candidates if that is indeed the case. Or it could just be a case of coincidence.

[listicle id=29258]

If the decision-makers at LSU are looking for a tie-in with Saban, don’t forget to look to the Pacific Northwest with Mario Cristobal from Orgeron. He knows the SEC, has ties to Saban, and he is an elite recruiter.  As the month of November moves on, we should get a clearer picture of who is actually in play.

My gut tells me it won’t be Fisher, but it is a wait-and-see scenario at this point.

SEC coaches talk players faking injuries to slow tempo

SEC coaches are getting tired of players faking injuries to slow tempo. A few of them discussed what needs to be done to stop it this week.

Players going down with an “injury” when the other team is running a high-tempo offense is an issue plaguing college football games across the nation.

For starters, it should be considered cheating. Pretending to be injured to stop play allows the team to slow down the opponent’s momentum without being forced to a call timeout. That’s a reason you have timeouts, right? To stop the game and regroup.

But since there’s no consequences to doing it, you’re seeing players mysteriously go down with an injury, usually a “cramp,” in almost every college football game you watch.

SEC head coaches Nick Saban, Jimbo Fisher and Lane Kiffin were all asked about what can be done to put an end to this while on this week’s SEC coaches teleconference.

Here’s what the head coaches had to say on the matter.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban:

Saban was asked if he is able to think of a resolution to the issue.”Not really,” he said.

“It really slows the game down, so it’s not a good thing for the game. It’s not something that we’ve ever done here.

“When a team goes fast, which everybody has the right to go fast, and you go on long drives .. players get tired. When players get tired, they’re more susceptible to getting injured. You don’t have enough timeouts to call time out, so I understand why some people do it. We’ve not done it here. It does impact the pace of play. I don’t have a solution to it.

“There’s a lot of good people out there that are above my pay grade, I probably shouldn’t even be trying to answer this question.”

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher:

Fisher focused on what could go wrong if you do start giving penalties or punishments to teams that use this tactic. He basically said that if you’re going to penalize teams for this, you better be sure that the player was actually faking the injury.

“I think there’s two things that go on — one .. injuries are going to occur. When do you get hurt? When you’re tired, you’re out of shape — that’s when you get hit bad, things happen. And to sit there and say somebody is lying on an injury is a very tough thing to say. Especially when you call wolf one time and the guy’s really hurt,” said Fisher.

“At the same time, I understand the complaint. I understand the process of which people do it. We do not do it here, we do not coach it here, I do not allow it here. .. I think it’s wrong.”

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin:

Kiffin was not really playing around. He provided a resolution to the issue, saying that players should be forced to sit out a certain number of players or that the SEC should review the incident after the game and hand out fines if it deems the player was in fact faking.

“It’s been talked about for years. .. I said, ‘Well, I can tell you I don’t think you’re going to really stop that until you make it the guy has to stay out for so many plays.’ There’s gotta be a penalty to it. If you really want to change it, let the conference review it — look at the film,” stated Kiffin. “If they deem it to be an obvious faking of an injury, then there’s a penalty .. a fine. Then, I promise you it would never happen anywhere.”
