Former Huskers edge defender commits to LSU Tigers

Jimari Butler has a new home.

Former Nebraska football defensive lineman Jimari Butler announced he was transferring to the LSU Tigers on Saturday night. He made the announcement on X.

Butler played a sizable role on the Nebraska football defensive unit over his four seasons in Lincoln. He started his career as a linebacker before moving to the defensive line in 2024. He played in 11 games this past season, recording 22 tackles, two sacks, and a fumble recovery.

He finished his time with the Huskers recording 65 combined tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks.

The Alabama native officially entered the transfer portal on December 2.

Nebraska football has been able to make some noise in the transfer portal over the past couple of days. This includes landing edge defender Williams Nwarneri.

Butler could have a chance to succeed in Baton Rouge under the tutelage of renowned edge rushers coach Kevin Peoples. At the very least, he will get a chance to play for one of the premier programs in college football.

Former Nebraska edge places Texas A&M in his top 3 transfer destinations

Texas A&M is a finalist to land former Nebraska Edge Jimari Butler

Texas A&M coach Mike Elko will attack the transfer portal this week needing to fill several positions. Given Nic Scourton and Shemar Stewart’s potential departure to the 2025 NFL draft, those needs include edge and defensive line.

On Sunday night, just hours before the opening of the transfer portal, it was reported former Nebraska edge Jimari Butler would visit three programs: Florida State, LSU and Texas A&M.

Knowing Cashius Howell and incoming junior defensive Rylan Kennedy are almost guaranteed to return, Butler would be a plug-and-play option to enhance Aggie’s pass rush and hopefully improve the run defense, which contributed to several of A&M’s SEC losses late in the season.

In Butler’s last two seasons with the Cornhuskers, Butler recorded 56 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks. He finished the 2024 season with a 62 pass-rush grade per Pro Football Focus.

Jimari Butler to enter transfer portal

Another Nebraska defender has entered the transfer portal

On Monday, the parade of players into the transfer portal included Cornhuskers junior defensive lineman Jimari Butler. The Mobile, Alabama native joins Huskers defenders Mikai Gbayor, Stefon Thompson, and Vincent Jackson as Blackshirts to hit the portal.

Butler finished his fifth regular season with the program this fall after arriving in Lincoln prior to the 2020 COVID season.

After playing in just two games in 2021 as a redshirt freshman, Butler became a key part of the Husker’s defense starting in 2022. He would play in 34 games over the course of the 2022-2024 seasons. In his 37 career games played, Butler totaled 65 tackles, including 17 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.

Butler was a consensus three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle. After originally being committed to the Tennessee Volunteers, Butler committed to Nebraska during the early signing period.

Key defenders looking to return in 2025

Two veteran Nebraska football defenders want to return in 2025

At his press conference on Monday, Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule said that defenders Jimari Butler and Marques Buford Jr. want to return next season. Both would be seniors, with Butler returning for a sixth year and Buford returning for a fifth.

Butler has recorded 19 tackles, two sacks, and a fumble recovery in 10 games this season. Buford has started in every game this season, making seven at the quarterback position and three at the safety position. He has 27 tackles, five fumble recoveries, and an interception on the season.

Buford had four tackles on Saturday against the USC Trojans, while Butler had three.

The Huskers’ defensive line will undergo changes next season. Seniors Ty Robinson and Nash Hutmacher will no longer be with the program, Safety DeShon Singleton will no longer be with the program, and rover Isaac Gifford will depart as well. Help will be needed on the back end.

This is undoubtedly notable news for a defense that will undergo an overhaul. It will be interesting to see if they can get that final year.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 1 Jimari Butler

The countdown until kickoff is down to just one day.

Only 24 hours remain until Nebraska’s 2024 season kicks off when the Cornhuskers take on the University of Texas El Paso Miners at Memorial Stadium.

With just one day to go, Huskers defensive lineman Jimari Butler is in the player spotlight.

Butler played in 11 of 12 games for the Huskers a season ago, including six starts. He recorded 34 tackles in those 11 games, including 17 solo tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks. He also had one forced fumble and two pass deflections.

Butler will be one of two defensive ends for the Huskers this season, starting opposite Ty Robinson. Together, the two defensive ends should give the Gophers a stout duo of edge rushers, which will have some high expectations surrounding them heading into Saturday’s season opener.
