Drew Brees excited to see what Derek Carr can do in Klint Kubiak’s offense

Drew Brees is excited to see what Derek Carr can do in Klint Kubiak’s offense: ‘I think they’re poised to have a really good season’

https://twitter.com/jimrome/status/1831445885143724321

This may not be the biggest bombshell in the news you’ll read today, but Drew Brees has a lot of thoughts on the New Orleans Saints. The 13-time Pro Bowler and legendary Saints quarterback sat down with Jim Rome this week to take stock on his old team and share his take on what’s ahead of them.

With kickoff against the Carolina Panthers closing in, it’s worth checking in with No. 9 to see what he’s expecting from Derek Carr in the revamped Saints offense.

“You know, I’m excited for him,” Brees grinned. “I think there’s definitely growth, you know, just when it comes to the chemistry with those guys who are in the locker room with him and on the field with him. But it also starts the Klint Kubiak era in New Orleans. I love that San Francisco offense and obviously Klint came from San Francisco. I think it provides the opportunity for all of our playmakers to really be in some dynamic situations. I had a chance to go watch them in training camp and see it this offseason as well. I know Derek is really excited to be with Klint in that offense, being in that offense, and getting another crack at it here. I think they’re poised to have a really good season.”

Brees pointed to instability around the division as reason for confidence that, yes, the Saints could go on a run. Kirk Cousins joining the Atlanta Falcons will be challenging. But the Panthers have a lot to prove with the league’s weakest roster and Bryce Young coming off a rough rookie year. And the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were soundly beaten by the Saints late last season only to go on a playoff run of their own anyway.

We’ll find out soon whether Brees’ excitement and confidence is warranted. The Saints haven’t returned to the glory days he ushered in, but they can still find success with him watching from home like many other fans.

Michael Irvin reveals conversation with Chiefs TE Travis Kelce about pursuing a three-peat

Michael Irvin reveals conversation with Kansas City #Chiefs TE Travis Kelce about pursuing a three-peat | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ journey to a possible three-peat will be discussed before every game this season. Outside of fans and the media, players have voiced their hopes of winning an unprecedented third consecutive title.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin appeared as a guest on ‘The Jim Rome Show’ on X to reveal his conversation with Chiefs star Travis Kelce at a recent Dallas Mavericks game.

“Travis Kelce spent some time with him, and he said to me, he grabbed me; hooked me real tight. And he said, Michael, tell me about that three-peat chase. Because, you know, we went through that, we tried that. We went for the three-peat, and we lost our coach. We changed in the midst of going for that three-peat.” said Irvin. “I told him every day, man, every day when I hit put head to pillow at night. Think about that one that got away. I think about the 1994 championship game.”

Irvin was a member of three Super Championship teams with the Dallas Cowboys but came up short in his three-peat bid, losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the 1994 NFC Championship game.

“I said, do all you can to make that happen, and don’t leave anything on the table. Because I’m telling you, if you leave anything on the table and don’t get it, you will think about it for the rest of your life, like I do,” said Irvin. “Man, that’s what I need (Said Kelce). So, I’m telling you, do everything.”

Irvin believes the Chiefs are favorites to achieve the three-peat because of Kelce’s curiosity. He also credited the winning culture with leading to the team’s string of success.

J.J. McCarthy already making an impression on Vikings locker room

J.J. McCarthy may not be the starting QB, yet, but he’s still making a big impression on the locker room according to LB Blake Cashman.

Sam Darnold may be the starting quarterback at this point in the season for the Minnesota Vikings, but that’s not a knock on rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, and it’s certainly not a reflection of how the locker room feels about the youngster. In an interview with Jim Rome, new Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman lavished praise upon the rookie:

“Yeah, 21 years old but a great young man. He’s a leader. He is eager to learn. A lot of young guys, sometimes they can come in, be a little timid or shy. But he’s walking round the locker room, big smile on his face, shaking hands, getting to know everybody.”

“I didn’t know much about his game before, and I knew he was an outstanding quarterback, winning followed him at Michigan. But I didn’t realize how much heat he could put on the ball. He’s got a great long ball. And even those tight windows, which close fast at the next level — he can zip the ball past a linebacker or safety’s head and squeeze it in those tight windows. And that’s very promising to see.”

Cashman, whom the Vikings signed in the offseason after two seasons with the Houston Texans, is no stranger to having a front-row seat to developing quarterbacks. Last season, he was on the Texans with Rookie of the Year quarterback C.J. Stroud. Cashman was also a rookie in 2019 with the Jets, where he played with then-second-year quarterback Sam Darnold—Darnold’s best statistical season as a professional.

While Darnold has the inside track to be the Vikings starter when the season starts, it’s only a matter of time before McCarthy takes the reins. When that remains to be seen, if McCarthy can continue his development and show the traits that Cashman sees in camp, he’ll be set up for success when his time comes.

Steve Kerr says he want’s Klay Thompson back with the Warriors ‘desperately’

Steve Kerr made it clear — he wants Klay Thompson back with the Warriors.

As free agency quickly approaches, Klay Thompson’s looming summer decision surrounds the Golden State Warriors. After spending 11 seasons with the Warriors and winning four championships, Thompson is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 30.

While Thompson’s decision in free agency is still a mystery, his head coach, Steve Kerr, recently made one thing clear — he wants the four-time champion sharpshooter back with the Warriors next season.

In an appearance on The Jim Rome Show, the Golden State head coach was asked about Thompson’s impending free agency. Kerr didn’t shy away from the question, giving an honest statement on his hopes to bring Thompson back to the Bay Area in free agency. While praising Thompson’s connection with the Warriors, Kerr said he “desperately” wants Thomspon back.

This is the way it works — in the NBA — in any professional sports. There’s just going to be difficult moments, uncomfortable moments, where money is involved, contracts, respect, however you want to put it. What I do know is, Klay has been such an integral part of everything around here. Obviously a mult-time champion, but even more than that, just someone who has such a great connection with the Bay Area, with the franchise, with his teammates, and so we want Klay back desperately. I want him back desperately. We will have our conversations and he’s got to make whatever decision he makes. Yeah, we really want him back. He’s Klay Thompson.

Via @jimrome on Twitter:

Thompson is coming off an up-and-down season that saw him come off the bench at times. The 34-year-old averaged 17.9 points on 43.2 % shooting from the field and 38.7% from beyond the arc, with 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 77 games.

Wisconsin HC Luke Fickell says Alabama matchup is in a perfect spot on 2024 schedule

Wisconsin HC Luke Fickell says Alabama matchup is ‘in a perfect spot’ on 2024 schedule

Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell joined the Jim Rome Show on X yesterday and discussed the Badgers’ upcoming 2024 season.

One big topic of conversation was the Week 3 home contest against top-ranked Alabama. The game is a big test for the Badgers before Big Ten play, and can serve as a valuable measuring stick for where the program and team stands.

RelatedAnalyzing Big Ten football 2024 preseason position group rankings

Fickell echoed that sentiment, noting the game is in a perfect place in the Badgers’ 2024 schedule as the team looks to establish itself in the new national landscape.

“Ultimately [the matchup] gives you an opportunity to figure out and measure where you are,” Fickell said on Rome’s show. “I don’t know that we can put it in a better spot…It’s going to be one of those opportunities where we’ll find out where we are. And you need that. I think as we go into the new era of the playoff system where you have 12 teams, it’s a better outlook looking at it forward and understanding that you need to be challenged early in the year, especially when you’re young and developing a program.”

Fickell’s comments focus on the Badgers and their development now in year two in his tenure with the program. It did not include the context on the opposing sideline: legendary head coach Nick Saban retired this offseason, leading to former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer taking over. The Crimson Tide are in a transition period, and they figure to be better late in the season than they will be early.

Alabama does enter the season ranked No. 5 in ESPN SP+‘s metric and as one of the preseason favorites in the SEC. As Fickell said, it will be a significant challenge.

This Week 3 matchup is one of several challenging games on the Badgers’ 2024 schedule. The team will be tested early, and also tested throughout the year. Other big-time games include Week 5 at USC, Week 9 vs. Penn State, Week 10 at Iowa, Week 12 vs. Oregon and Week 13 at Nebraska.

The Badgers enter the 2024 campaign with tempered expectations due to that schedule. But improvement is still expected in year two under Fickell and offensive coordinator Phil Longo.

A win against Alabama would be a springboard for the Wisconsin program entering the sport’s new conference and postseason landscape.

Notre Dame running back Audric Estime responds to The Bus comparisons

“Baby Bus” might be overtaking “The Bus” statistically later this year

[autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] has a long history of very good running backs coming through South Bend, and currently [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] is one of those.

The junior has rushed for 901 yards on 146 carries, scoring 12 touchdowns while adding in 13 receptions for 109 yards. Over 1,000 yards from scrimmage for the second year in-a-row will get plenty of attention, enough that many have been calling Estime “Baby Bus,” referring to former Irish great [autotag]Jerome Bettis[/autotag].

Statistically, they are extremely similar, Estime should overtake Bettis’ career total yardage mark later this year. The current Irish star back recently joined [autotag]Jim Rome[/autotag] on his show and discussed his thoughts on the nickname along with his relationship with Bettis. Jahan Dotson says Sam Howell is ‘our guy’

Jahan Dotson is “excited’ to make plays for Sam Howell.

Washington Commanders wide receiver Jahan Dotson enters his second NFL season in 2023, with some believing he is a potential breakout candidate. Despite missing five games as a rookie, the 2022 first-round pick led the Commanders with seven touchdown receptions.

Dotson had an impressive rookie season, even with inconsistent quarterback play. Dotson caught passes from Carson Wentz, Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell. All but Howell are elsewhere in 2023, and the Commanders have decided to go all-in with the second-year passer from North Carolina.

While head coach Ron Rivera hasn’t named a starting quarterback but all signs point to Howell. Veteran Jacoby Brissett will not make it easy on Howell. However, Dotson thinks the Commanders have their guy, and it’s Howell.

“I think we got our quarterback situation settled,” Dotson said in an appearance on “The Jim Rome Show. “I think Sam Howell’s gonna be our guy. I have complete faith in him. He’s a guy who, I always say this, he makes throws look super effortless on the field. He’s been a great leader; he’s learning how to lead an offense……I’m super excited for him, and I can’t wait to get out there and make plays for him”

Dotson is excited to play in new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s offense. Dotson tweeted right after Bieniemy was announced as the OC, sharing his excitement, something he’s continued to express since getting to know his new boss.

“Having Coach Bieniemy here with us, I’m truly grateful for it,” Dotson said. “Because he’s going to bring the best out of you as a player.”

You can listen to the full interview here, where he also talks about fellow wideout Terry McLaurin.

WATCH: Kareem Jackson discusses Sean Payton and Russell Wilson

“I think Russell Wilson has that toughness and the mindset and the mentality to bounce back,” Kareem Jackson said on The Jim Rome Show.

Jim Rome continues his interview tour of the Denver Broncos’ secondary.

About a week after Denver cornerback Pat Surtain appeared on The Jim Rome Show, Broncos safety Kareem Jackson made an appearance as well.

In an interview with Rome on Monday, Jackson spoke about new head coach Sean Payton, quarterback Russell Wilson and more.

“It’s great to have a captain like that running your ship,” Jackson said of Payton. “It should be a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to it.”

Jackson was later asked about the possibility of Wilson having a better season in 2023 after struggling in 2022.

“It’s all about how you bounce back,” Jackson said. “I think Russell Wilson has that toughness and the mindset and the mentality to bounce back. And obviously having Coach Sean Payton is going to be huge for him as well. … I think he’ll definitely help Russell to get back to where he’s always been in this league.”

The segment about Payton and Wilson can be seen in the below video.

Pat Surtain discusses Sean Payton and more on The Jim Rome Show

“I think it’s that time where I just set apart myself and step into the leadership phase,” Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain told Jim Rome.

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain went on The Jim Rome Show last week to discuss new coach Sean Payton and the upcoming 2023 season.

Surtain said that Payton has quickly gelledg with the team’s players.

“Even though we’re just starting to get to know each other, it seems like we’ve known each other for a long time already,” Surtain said of his new coach. “We connect very well.”

Surtain said Payton is entertaining while also being “locked in” with the team.

“Sean, he just knows what it takes,” Surtain said of the Super Bowl-winning coach.

When asked where he wants to improve in 2023, Surtain said he can continue improving and mastering his technique. He also wants to continue growing as a leader.

“Even though I’m still young — you know, I’m in my third year — I think it’s that time where I just set apart myself and step into the leadership phase. You know, just be out there for the team, whether it’s leading by example or just leading vocally.”

Surtain, 23, is entering his third season with the Broncos. He has totaled 24 pass breakups and six interceptions over the last two years.
