Former Vols’ assistant Jim Chaney set for Neyland Stadium return

Former Tennessee assistant coach Jim Chaney is set for Neyland Stadium return on Saturday.

No. 17 Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC) will host Texas A&M (4-2, 2-1 SEC) Saturday at Neyland Stadium in Week 7 (3:30 p.m. EDT, CBS).

In 2012 under Dooley, Chaney was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also served as the Vols’ interim head coach for the final game of the 2012 season after Dooley was relieved of his duties.

Texas A&M hires veteran coordinator Jim Chaney for analyst position

Texas A&M has reportedly hired veteran offensive coordinator Jim Chaney for an offensive analyst postion

Texas A&M’s coaching staff has just become stronger, as it was reported by GigEm247 early Thursday that the Aggies have hired veteran coordinator Jim Chaney to an analyst position on offense under new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, leaving a similar post with Georgia Tech during the 2022 season.

Chaney, age 61, has had a very interesting career at both the collegiate and professional level, starting his Division 1 career under Head coach Joe Tiller’s spread offense, known as “basketball on grass” at Wyoming (1993-1996) and Purdue (1997-2005) at the start of his career as an offensive coordinator. During his time at Purdue, Chaney guided Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees while breaking multiple records in the Big Ten, and NCAA within his illustrious four-year career.

After a brief two-year stint with the then St. Louis Rams, Chaney served as the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and running backs coach for the Tennessee Volunteers for a span of six seasons, while also serving in the same two positions for Arkansas under current Illinois Head coach Bret Bielema (2013-2014), Pittsburgh (2015), and Georgia (2016-2018).

From a scheme perspective, Chaney’s recent history as a coordinator lies in the pro-style system with a number of West coast concepts, which fits well with Head coach Jimbo Fisher’s general offensive outlook, and Bobby Petrino’s spread formations in the passing game.

Former Georgia football OC Jim Chaney joins UGA rival

Report: Jim Chaney joins a UGA rival

Former Georgia offensive coordinator Jim Chaney has joined the Georgia Tech staff as an offensive analyst.

Chaney most recently held the same position of offensive analyst with the New Orleans Saints. He previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2016-2018 and went on to hold the same position with the University of Tennessee from 2019-2020.

First reported by Bryce Koon of 247Sports, Chaney now joins Geoff Collins’ staff in Atlanta following a 3-9 season that saw the Yellow Jackets score 0 points in a 45-0 loss to the Bulldogs. Tech’s offense was abysmal last season, ranking No. 95 in scoring at only 24 points per game in a less than impressive ACC.

Though the teams that Chaney worked on at Georgia found great success, including a national title run in 2017, Chaney is not one of the more liked coordinators in UGA history for the way he ran the Bulldogs’ offense. It had the players, that was never a concern. The issues had more to do with Chaney’s style of play that featured short passes and a heavy reliance on the run game.

Chaney, a native of Missouri, has over 30 years of coaching experience including 25 seasons as a offensive coordinator at the college level.

Tennessee (7-5, 4-4 SEC) will play in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl against Purdue (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten).

The contest will take place Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST and ESPN will televise the matchup.

Tennessee and Purdue have played one other time. The Boilermakers defeated Tennessee, 27-22, in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl on Dec. 31, 1979 at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas.

Throughout its history, Tennessee and Purdue share a coaching connection in Jim Chaney.

Chaney served as Purdue’s offensive coordinator under head coach Joe Tiller between 1997-2005. At Purdue, Chaney mentored Drew Brees, who retired following the 2020 NFL season. He is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in NFL history.

Chaney served in the same capacity at Tennessee under three head coaches.

He was offensive coordinator for the Vols under Lane Kiffin (2009), Derek Dooley (2010-12) and Jeremy Pruitt (2019-20). Chaney served as interim head coach for UT’s win over Kentucky after Dooley was fired during the 2012 season. Chaney has a head coaching record of 1-0.

During Chaney’s time at Purdue under Tiller, the Boilermakers were known for its basketball on grass offense, winning the 2000 Big Ten championship and appearing in the 2001 Rose Bowl.

Tiller brought the spread offense to Purdue, featuring three, four, even five wide receivers forcing defenses to cover the field from sideline to sideline. It was a radical change from the smash-mouth Big Ten – forever prided on three yards and a cloud of dust – and was met with its fair share of skeptics. In the basketball-crazed state of Indiana, the spread was dubbed affectionately “basketball on grass.” –Purduesports.com

Saints hire former Georgia offensive coordinator Jim Chaney

The New Orleans Saints have hired former Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator Jim Chaney to be an offensive analyst

The New Orleans Saints have hired Jim Chaney to be an offensive analyst. Chaney previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2016-2018. Chaney then went on to hold the same position with the University of Tennessee from 2019-2020.

The Saints are looking to rebuild following their playoff defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. New Orleans will likely have a quarterback under center for the first time in years with the pending retirement of Drew Brees.

Jim Chaney has a lot of talent to work with in New Orleans including Michael Thomas, Alvin Kamara, and a stout offensive line. Chaney brings previous NFL coaching experience to the Saints.

Chaney, a native of Missouri, has over 30 years of coaching experience including 25 seasons as a offensive coordinator at the college level.

The Tennessee Volunteers still owe Jim Chaney a significant amount of money on his contract. The Vols fired Chaney after Jeremy Pruitt’s recruiting scandal emerged this offseason.

Offensive line coach John Peterson’s history working alongside Jim Chaney

Offensive line coach John Peterson’s history working alongside offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.

The offseason has started for Tennessee’s football program.

Tennessee (3-7, 3-7 SEC) concluded its 2020 season with a 34-13 loss to Texas Texas A&M on Dec. 19.

With the offseason underway, Tennessee will look to evaluate its coaching staff.

Third-year Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt relieved defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh of his duties in October during the season.

Offensive line coach Will Friend has joined South Carolina’s coaching staff.

Wide receivers coach Tee Martin and inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer have expiring contracts on Jan. 31, 2021.

Tennessee could potentially look to fill four or more assistant coaching positions this offseason.

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney has a history of coaching alongside John Peterson.

Peterson served as offensive line coach when Chaney was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Pittsburgh in 2015. He is currently serving as offensive tackles and tight ends coach at Youngstown State.

Peterson previously discussed Pruitt hiring Chaney with Vols Wire.

“I definitely still keep in contact with Jim and I think it is a great hire for a lot of different reasons,” Peterson told Vols Wire. “He is an outstanding recruiter and an evaluator that does a great job in all facets. Pulling Chaney away from Georgia is a big deal.

“I went through seven offensive coordinators in a seven-year span and he by far was the best game-planner. He is truly an expert of putting together different facets and really understanding what the players can do and building strengths around them. He is a very intelligent person, but also relates well and is a very good communicator with the coaching staff and the players, so I think he is a great hire for Tennessee.”

If Chaney is looked upon to fulfill another year on his Tennessee contract, Peterson could potentially become a candidate in replacing Friend.

A move for Peterson to have any discussions to reunite with Chaney on Pruitt’s staff would ultimately be decided with Director of Athletics Phillip Fulmer and his support for the head coach he hired three years ago.
