Colts request interview with Panthers OC candidate Jim Bob Cooter

The Panthers and Colts may be battling for another coach, as the latter has now requested an interview with offensive coordinator candidate Jim Bob Cooter.

Well, it looks like the Carolina Panthers have a little competition in the offensive coordinator department.

On Thursday morning, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Indianapolis Colts have requested an interview with Jim Bob Cooter for their current opening. The Panthers have already interviewed the 38-year-old coach, who is one of two known candidates remaining for the vacancy.

Cooter, now the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, crossed paths with new Philadelphia Eagles head coach Shane Steichen last season. 2021 saw Steichen in his first year as the team’s offensive coordinator while Cooter served as a consultant.

He, of course, has ties to new Panthers coach Frank Reich from their days with the Indianapolis Colts as well. Cooter was an offensive assistant there from 2009 to 2011, the same time Reich took up jobs as the quarterbacks coach and wide receivers coach.

Carolina’s search also extends to Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach Thomas Brown, whose second interview with the team is scheduled for today.

The Colts want to interview the Jaguars’ Jim Bob Cooter

The Colts finally hired a head coach and he may look to the Jaguars’ coaching ranks to find his offensive coordinator.

The Indianapolis Colts finally landed on a new head coach, hiring former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen after a lengthy search. The next step for the Colts is filling out the coaching staff and Jim Bob Cooter appears to be at the top of their list.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Colts requested to interview Cooter for their vacant offensive coordinator role. As it’d be a promotion from Cooter’s current position as the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator, Jacksonville cannot deny the request.

Cooter, 38, has been a relatively popular name among teams hunting for an offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers both interviewing him in the last few weeks.

The former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator joined the Jaguars in February 2022. In his first season with the team, quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville passing offense made massive strides and finished 10th in passing yards, 14th in passing touchdowns, and had the third fewest interceptions.

Indianapolis finished the 2022 season with the third fewest points scored and rotated between Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, and Nick Foles at quarterback. Colts owner Jim Irsay has made it clear that the team intends to find a young quarterback — perhaps Alabama’s Bryce Young — to take over.

Report: Colts request OC interview with Jim Bob Cooter

The Colts have requested an interview with Jim Bob Cooter for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

The Indianapolis Colts have requested an interview with Jim Bob Cooter for their offensive coordinator vacancy, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Most recently serving as the passing-game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars under Doug Pederson, Cooter has been requested a few times by other teams this offseason.

As new head coach Shane Steichen fills out his staff, Cooter is the first interview request we know of since the former was officially announced.

Cooter, 38, got his start coaching in the NFL with the Colts as an offensive assistant under former head coach Jim Caldwell. He held the role for three seasons (2009-2011).

He then served as an offensive quality control coach with the Kansas City Chiefs (2012) and an offensive assistant coach with the Denver Broncos (2013). Cooter then joined the Detroit Lions staff as the quarterbacks coach for two seasons (2014-2015).

Cooter took over as the interim offensive coordinator during the 2015 season and was promoted to full-time offensive coordinator for the three seasons to follow (2016-2018) before the Lions cleaned house.

Following his stint with the Lions, Cooter joined the New York Jets coaching staff as the running backs coach for two seasons (2019-2020) under Adam Gase and then was an offensive consultant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021, which is likely where the connection with Steichen grew.

In 2022, Cooter joined Doug Pederson’s staff with the Jacksonville Jaguars as the pass-game coordinator.

Panthers waiting on Super Bowl LVII to fill their OC position?

Even with the Panthers coaching staff beginning to fill out, the offensive coordinator job remains vacant. So they may be waiting on a certain QB coach to finish up at Super Bowl LVII.

On Friday night, the Carolina Panthers hired Josh McCown as their new quarterbacks coach. But, uh, why are they hiring a quarterbacks coach when they don’t even have an offensive coordinator yet?

Well, that’s because they’re probably waiting for the season to be officially over with.

While gauging Carolina’s growing coaching staff in a new report from Saturday, Joe Person of The Athletic noted that the Panthers—along with a few other teams—could be waiting on Super Bowl LVII to make their next personnel move. Person, who also suggests that Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson could be the top pick for Carolina head coach Frank Reich, writes:

Many in league circles believe Philadelphia offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who interviewed for the Panthers’ head-coaching vacancy, will be the Colts’ next coach. If that happens, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni likely will promote Johnson to offensive coordinator.

Johnson’s work with Jalen Hurts makes him attractive to a team like the Panthers, who may finally draft a top-10 quarterback this year. But if Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon gets the Cardinals’ job, he almost certainly would try to take Johnson with him to coach Kyler Murray.

Johnson, a reported target of former interim head coach Steve Wilks as well, helped push Hurts to an MVP-caliber campaign in the NFL’s third-best total offense. So he should, obviously, have quite a few opportunities ahead of him.

But what if the opportunity he chooses isn’t in Charlotte?

Person added that Jacksonville Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who interviewed with the team this past week, may be the next name in line.

May the dominoes soon begin to fall . . .

Jaguars’ Jim Bob Cooter getting interest for vacant OC jobs

The Jaguars’ pass game coordinator is getting interest from other teams.

The Carolina Panthers requested to interview Jacksonville Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter for their vacant offensive coordinator role, according to a report on Wednesday from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Cooter, 38, also interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator vacancy last week.

After first breaking into the NFL coaching ranks in 2009 as an offensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts, Cooter made a couple more stops before joining the Detroit Lions as a quarterbacks coach. He eventually spent three seasons as the Lions’ offensive coordinator until his contract expired after the 2018 season.

Cooter was added to the Jaguars’ staff as pass game coordinator shortly after Doug Pederson took over as the team’s head coach. In his first season in the role, Jacksonville finished 10th in passing yards.

Former No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence made massive improvements in 2022 under Cooter, Pederson, and offensive coordinator Press Taylor. After finishing his rookie season with a 71.9 passer rating, his rating improved to 95.2 in year two.

Panthers OC candidate profile: Jim Bob Cooter

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator candidate profile: Jim Bob Cooter

Now that they have their offensive-minded head coach in Frank Reich, the Carolina Panthers will have to get their offensive coordinator. And one of the early names to emerge as a possibility is Jacksonville Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

Cooter has an extensive history on the NFL’s sidelines, most notably as an offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions—a stint that began on an interim basis in the middle of the 2015 campaign. In the 2017, he commanded the seventh-best scoring offense in the league and helped direct quarterback Matthew Stafford to one of the best seasons of his career—where he put up 29 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions while touting a 99.3 passer rating.

Even earlier than that, the Fayetteville, Tenn. native was part of one of the greatest offenses ever—serving as an assistant for Peyton Manning’s 2013 Denver Broncos. He also played a role in the Trevor Lawrence breakout year this past season under Reich’s old buddy in Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson.

Cooter would be a savvy and relatively familiar hire for Reich, and a person who he might feel comfortable turning over play-calling duties to. His history and proven offensive success would make yet another solid addition to help this growing staff and whichever quarterback is deemed the starter going into 2023.

Panthers request to speak with Jaguars’ Jim Bob Cooter for OC job

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have requested permission to speak with Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter for their offensive coordinator job.

During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich expressed his excitement about getting to work. Well, he wasn’t kidding.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have requested permission to speak with Jacksonville Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter for their offensive coordinator position.

Cooter cracked into the NFL as an offensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts, a job he’d maintain from 2009 to 2011. Over the next two seasons, he’d go on to become an offensive quality control coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and then an offensive assistant for the Denver Broncos.

His next step came with the Detroit Lions, as the team’s quarterbacks coach in 2014. Cooter was then promoted to offensive coordinator during the 2015 campaign, where he’d last through 2018.

The Fayetteville, Tenn. native would go on to serve as the running backs coach for the New York Jets (2019-2020) and a consultant for the Philadelphia Eagles (2021) before winding up in Jacksonville in 2022.

Rapoport also noted that the Panthers requested permission to speak with Lions assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley for an “elevated position” on their staff. This somewhat conflicts with an earlier report from ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano, who tweeted that Staley was already leaving Detroit to join Frank Reich in Carolina.

Bucs complete offensive coordinator interview with Jim Bob Cooter

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have completed an interview with Jim Bob Cooter for their vacant offensive coordinator position

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to meet with candidates to replace Byron Leftwich as their new offensive coordinator.

The latest to interview for the open position? Jacksonville Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who completed his interview on Thursday, the team announced.

Cooter led a passing game that ranked 10th in the NFL this year, as Trevor Lawrence showed marked improvement over his rookie season, with the Jags winning the AFC South and advancing to the second round of the playoffs.

Minnesota Vikings wide receivers coach (and former Bucs wide receiver) Keenan McCardell and Denver Broncos passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak have also interviewed for the job this week.

Former Lions coach Jim Bob Cooter is a candidate for the Buccaneers OC opening

Cooter was the Jaguars passing game coordinator in 2022 and was the Lions OC from 2015-2018

Former Lions coaches remain in the news around the NFL. Jim Bob Cooter, who was the offensive coordinator in Detroit from 2015-2018, is now a candidate to become the new OC for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Buccaneers have asked the Jacksonville Jaguars for permission to interview Cooter for their opening.

Cooter served as the passing game coordinator for the Jaguars in 2022. He’s also had offensive coaching stints with the Jets and Eagles since he was let go by the Lions after Matt Patricia’s first season as head coach.

[lawrence-related id=87157]

Cooter had positive results in working with QB Trevor Lawrence and former Lions wideouts Marvin Jones and Jamal Agnew in Jacksonville last season. His final season as coordinator in Detroit saw the Lions finish 25th in scoring and 24th in yardage.

The Buccaneers parted ways with OC Byron Leftwich after a disappointing finish to the 2022 season.
