Perfect prospect fits for Colts at positions of need

These prospects are perfect fits for the Colts in the NFL draft.

The 2023 NFL Draft finally begins this week. On April 27,  the Indianapolis Colts will look to add exceptional talent and critical depth to their roster. At the top of the list of objectives is addressing positions of need.

General manager Chris Ballard has often stressed the “need to get it right” this offseason. In terms of the draft, what does that look like?

Currently holding nine selections in the draft, the Colts will have their chances to address positions of need.

Here are the perfect prospect fits for the Colts at critical positions of need in the draft:

Jaguars reportedly hire UNLV OC Nick Holz as pass game coordinator

The Jaguars found their replacement for Jim Bob Cooter in the college ranks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t take long to fill the vacancy left by Jim Bob Cooter’s departure. After the team’s former pass game coordinator left to become the offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, the Jaguars landed on UNLV offensive coordinator Nick Holz to take over the role, according to Mia O’Brien of 1010XL.

Holz, 38, spent a decade in the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders organization, joining the team as an offensive assistant in 2012 and working his way up to assistant wide receivers coach. He left the Raiders to take over as the UNLV offensive coordinator in 2022.

In his only season at UNLV, the team averaged 26.3 points per game, up from 20.8 points in the year prior to his arrival.

The Jaguars don’t need to reinvent the wheel in 2023 after finding breakout success on offense in their first season with Doug Pederson. The pass game led the way with Trevor Lawrence emerging as a star in his second season with 25 passing touchdown, eight interceptions, and five rushing touchdowns.

In addition to Holz and Pederson, offensive coordinator Press Taylor and quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy will play a significant role in Lawrence’s continued development.

Colts coaching staff tracker: Who will Shane Steichen hire?

Tracking the Colts coaching staff hires under new head coach Shane Steichen.

The Indianapolis Colts have already introduced Shane Steichen as the new head coach, and he’ll be working quickly to fill out the coordinator and assistant roles on the staff.

While we’ve learned of a few reported hires, such as offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, there will be decisions to be made in all three phases. There’s a chance that defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone are retained, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

We will keep you up to date with the latest news in the coaching hires along Steichen’s staff, but it should be noted that nothing is official until the team announces it as so.

Here are the latest updates in the Colts’ coach staff hires:

The Colts are hiring ex-Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter to run their offense

Cooter was the Lions offensive coordinator from 2016-2018

The Indianapolis Colts wanted to hire current Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their head coach. Johnson wasn’t interested in leaving the Lions, so Colts owner Jim Irsay looked elsewhere, hiring Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen instead.

There will still be some Lions flavor in Indianapolis, however. Former Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter will be the new offensive coordinator under Steichen.

Cooter, now 38, was the Lions offensive coordinator from 2016-2018 under head coach Jim Caldwell. He also served as the QB coach in Detroit for two seasons. Most recently, Cooter was the passing game coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

8 things to know about Colts’ new OC Jim Bob Cooter

Here are eight things to know about Colts’ new OC Jim Bob Cooter.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to hire Jim Bob Cooter as the offensive coordinator under new head coach Shane Steichen.

While the rest of the offensive coaching staff has yet to be announced, this hiring was reported by multiple outlets.

While Steichen will be the one calling plays, Cooter’s role as the offensive coordinator will be vital in the development of whichever young quarterback the Colts select in the 2023 NFL draft.

Here are eight things to know about the Colts’ new offensive coordinator:

Report: Colts hiring Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator

Jim Bob Cooter is reportedly set to become the Colts offensive coordinator.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly losing passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter as their divisional rival, the Indianapolis Colts, is expected to name the assistant coach their new offensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Cooter, 38, spent just one season with the Jaguars after joining the team as part of Doug Pederson’s staff last offseason. With the trio of Pederson, Cooter, and offensive coordinator Press Taylor at the reins, Jacksonville’s offense made leaps and bounds in 2022.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who led the NFL in interceptions as a rookie, earned Pro Bowl honors in his second season with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His passer rating climbed from 71.9 in 2021 to 95.2 in his second NFL season.

Prior to joining the Jaguars, Cooter had a three-year stint as the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions from 2016 to 2018. After his contract was allowed to expire, Cooter spent two seasons as the New York Jets’ running backs coach and one season as a consultant with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Colts recently hired former Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their new head coach and the team appears primed to draft a quarterback in the top five picks of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Cooter also interviewed for offensive coordinator positions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers prior to the Colts’ interview request.

It’s unclear for now if the Jaguars will make an outside hire to fill the vacancy, promote a coach already on the staff, or eliminate the position. Changing the title of quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy to passing game coordinator may be the most prudent way to fill the void.

Colts to name Jim Bob Cooter new offensive coordinator

The Colts are reportedly expected to hire Jim Bob Cooter as the new offensive coordinator.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to name Jim Bob Cooter the offensive coordinator under new head coach Shane Steichen, first reported by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Cooter was the first known candidate to be in the running for the offensive coordinator vacancy following a successful season as the passing-game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022.

Cooter, 38, got his start coaching in the NFL with the Colts as an offensive assistant under former head coach Jim Caldwell. He held the role for three seasons (2009-2011).

He then served as an offensive quality control coach with the Kansas City Chiefs (2012) and an offensive assistant coach with the Denver Broncos (2013). Cooter then joined the Detroit Lions staff as the quarterbacks coach for two seasons (2014-2015).

Cooter took over as the interim offensive coordinator during the 2015 season and was promoted to full-time offensive coordinator for the three seasons to follow (2016-2018) before the Lions cleaned house.

In the three seasons Cooter was the offensive coordinator, Matthew Stafford completed 65.7% of his passes while averaging 4,445 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions per season (on a 17-game pace).

Following his stint with the Lions, Cooter joined the New York Jets coaching staff as the running backs coach for two seasons (2019-2020) under Adam Gase and then was an offensive consultant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021, which is likely where the connection with Steichen grew.

In 2022, Cooter joined Doug Pederson’s staff with the Jaguars as the passing-game coordinator.

Jim Bob Cooter ‘remains a strong candidate’ for Panthers OC job

It’s looking increasingly likely that Jim Bob Cooter will land an offensive coordinator job elsewhere.

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that the Jacksonville Jaguars will be able to retain passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter after a breakout year for the team’s offense in 2022.

Amid reports that the Indianapolis Colts requested an interview with Cooter for their vacant offensive coordinator role, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston says the Carolina Panthers aren’t out of the mix.

Cooter “remains a strong candidate” in the Panthers’ search for an offensive coordinator, sources told Wilson.

In the Jaguars’ first season with head coach Doug Pederson at the helm, the team finished 10th in passing yards, 14th in touchdown passes, and had the third fewest interceptions. Second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence made significant leaps and earned Pro Bowl honors.

While it’s tough to say who deserves the most credit with Pederson, Lawrence, Cooter, and offensive coordinator Press Taylor all playing a significant role, it’s also easy to understand why the Jaguars would want to keep the brain trust together.

Cooter, who previously spent three seasons as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator, also interviewed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, although that team decided to hire Dave Canales for the role.

Earlier in the offseason, Jaguars wide receivers coach Chris Jackson opted to take the same position with the Texas Longhorns. Jacksonville filled that spot Thursday, making official the hire of former Buffalo Bills receivers coach Chad Hall.
