Jets’ 53-man roster prediction 7.0: Final projections before cutdown day

Check out our latest 53-man roster predictions after the Jets’ preseason finale.

With the Jets’ 2021 preseason slate officially in the books after their tie against the Eagles at MetLife Stadium on Friday night, roster cutdown day is is almost here.

New York must trim its roster from 80 to 53 players before 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas would likely prefer to keep more than 53 players considering the talent in the building at One Jets Drive, but that is not the way things work in the NFL. Gang Green’s head coach-general manager duo will now spend the next 72 hours making excruciating decisions on players who have put everything on the line to make the team over the last month.

Here is Jets Wire’s final attempt at predicting New York’s Week 1 53-man roster.

Jets’ 53-man roster prediction 6.0: Preseason Week 2, Carl Lawson’s injury bring change

Check out our latest 53-man roster predictions following Carl Lawson’s injury and the Jets’ Week 2 preseason win over the Packers.

The landscape of the Jets’ 53-man roster changed dramatically when Carl Lawson was left writhing in pain with a ruptured Achilles suffered during joint practices against the Packers.

New York took the field for its preseason Week 2 matchup as it will for every game for the rest of the season — with Lawson sidelined. One player does not make up a unit, but Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich’s defense was predicated largely around what Lawson brings to the table as a pass rusher from his right defensive end position. As such, New York’s defensive line rotation is now much different than it was this time last week.

With Lawson’s fate for this season sealed and Gang Green defeating the Packers on Saturday,  here is Jets Wire’s latest attempt at predicting the Jets’ Week 1 53-man roster.

The 5 hardest cuts from Jets Wire’s preseason Week 1 roster prediction

After releasing a 53-man roster prediction following Week 1 of the preseason, we at Jets Wire explained our toughest cuts.

Training camp and the preseason is the time for players to establish themselves as contributors and lock down roster spots.

It is also the place where NFL dreams sometimes go to die.

The Jets can only carry 53 players once the beginning of the regular season arrives — a far cry from the 90 they currently have in the building with training camp now two weeks in. New York would likely prefer to keep more than 53 players around considering the talent it has at One Jets Drive, but that is not how things work in professional football.

Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh are going to have some excruciating decisions to make at the end of August. Which players did just enough to make the 53-man squad? Which players fell just short and will now have to seek a new opportunity elsewhere? Those questions will be answered after countless hours of watching film and deliberating.

We at Jets Wire took a crack at projecting the 53-man roster after Saturday’s preseason opener against the Giants. All of the cuts predicted in that piece can be seen directly below, followed by explanations for the toughest severances.

  • QB: Josh Johnson, James Morgan
  • RB: Josh Adams, Austin Walter
  • WR: Manasseh Bailey, Braxton Berrios, Lawrence Cager, Josh Malone, D.J. Montgomery, Jeff Smith
  • TE: Daniel Brown, Kenny Yeboah
  • OL: Tristen Hoge, Corey Levin, Jimmy Murray, David Moore
  • DL: Ronald Blair, Michael Dwumfour, Kyle Phillips, Hamilcar Rashed Jr., Tanzel Smart
  • LB: Noah Dawkins, Camilo Eifler, Del’Shawn Phillips, Edmond Robinson, Brendon White
  • CB: Corey Ballentine, Elijah Campbell, Lamar Jackson, Zane Lewis
  • S: Bennett Jackson, J.T. Hassell
  • K: Chris Naggar (released Monday)

Jets Roster Prediction 6.0: Final cuts

For the final time this offseason, Jets Wire takes a crack at predicting New York’s 53-man roster to begin the 2020 season.

Training camp at One Jets Drive is over. Now, it’s time for Joe Douglas and Adam Gase to make some tough decisions regarding New York’s 53-man roster ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

Final cut day is never easy for coaches, general managers and players alike. Coaches and GMs are forced to part ways with players they would have preferred to keep because of the numbers game, while bubble players sweat out the day, hoping they will not receive a phone call from anyone in the organization.

It was a training camp unlike any other because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Jets have put in enough work on the practice field to be ready for Week 1. With that being said, here is Jets Wire’s final crack at predicting who will be on New York’s roster to begin the 2020 season.

Quarterback (3)

Syndication: North Jersey

Starter: Sam Darnold

Backups: David Fales, James Morgan

Cut: Mike White

The Jets have yet to make a decision on Joe Flacco’s status for Week 1, but he will likely begin the season on the PUP list. That leaves the door open for David Fales to claim his roster spot as New York’s No. 2 quarterback.

Joe Douglas wouldn’t risk cutting James Morgan and losing him on waivers after drafting him in April, which makes him a roster lock. Carrying three quarterbacks is not common in today’s NFL, but New York doesn’t have much of a choice in this situation.

Jets’ 53-man roster prediction 2.0: Jamal Adams trade shakes things up ahead of camp

Jets Wire takes a crack at projecting New York’s 53-man roster for the 2020 season following the Jamal Adams trade.

The composition of the Jets’ 53-man roster just got a whole lot different now that Jamal Adams is no longer with the organization.

New York sent Adams and a 2022 fourth-round pick to the Seahawks in exchange for two first-round draft picks, a 2021 third-round pick and safety Bradley McDougald on Saturday. Adams’ departure had been in the works for a while, but there was still a chance he started the 2020 season with the Jets. Now, he will play his football on the West Coast while New York welcomes a new safety into the mix.

The Adams trade shakes up the dynamic of the Jets’ secondary and has Jets Wire’s latest roster prediction looking a bit different than the one that came out following the draft. With that being said, let’s get into Jets Wire’s latest crack at projecting New York’s 53-man roster with training camp getting started.

Predictions 1.0 – Post-NFL Draft |

Quarterback (3)

Starter: Sam Darnold

Backups: David Fales, James Morgan

Cut: Mike White

With Joe Flacco on the shelf for the start of 2020, the Jets are likely to carry three quarterbacks to begin the regular season.

Fales is likely to serve as New York’s No. 2 quarterback, as the plan is to allow Morgan to watch and learn from the sideline as a rookie. Unless he surpasses all expectations in training camp, expect Morgan to remain Gang Green’s third-string quarterback for the duration of the season. Once Flacco is healthy, Fales will be the likely odd man out.
