AFC East offseason: Jets plan to keep Le’Veon Bell, Jamal Adams

What the Jets said about Le’Veon Bell, Jamal Adams at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.

Since the 2019 NFL trade deadline last season, questions have swirled around the Jets and AFC East in regard to their star running back and safety, Le’Veon Bell and Jamal Adams.

Those rumors, questions and speculation continue to present day, months later. The current Jets general manager, Joe Douglas, answered some questions about the status about those two at the NFL Scouting Combine this week in Indianapolis.

On Bell, Douglas said via Jets Wire:

“There hasn’t been talk as far as him going anywhere,” the GM said. “We’re excited about Le’Veon. Le’Veon has been a great teammate. I can’t tell you how great he’s been. … We’re excited to have him.”

Jets head coach Adam Gase also discussed Bell in a praise-filled way.

“He’s been great for us,” Gase said. “He’s done everything I’ve asked him to do. He tried to do things the right way. What anybody else says, I think we’re to the point where we really don’t care. As long as our relationship is good, we’re good.”

On Adams, his contract needs extending as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. Douglas said the team has had “some preliminary discussions” with Adams on an extension, adding that both the club and player want him to be a “Jet for life.”

The reasons for the bad blood differ. Bell was signed to a big contract by the Jets last offseason, but their former GM signed it and Gase was reportedly not on board with it. Douglas wasn’t the guy who signed Bell, so could he try and move him? On Adams, he was a player that the Jets also were reportedly “shopping” near the deadline, to the surprise of many. So there was some hurt feelings there.

But as things sit now… in February… those two with face the Bills next season.

The Jets relied on their defense to get a 16-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in their last game. Adam Gase’s squad forced two crucial turnovers, both interceptions of Steelers quarterback Devlin Hodges, which proved to be the difference. The Jets and Steelers went into halftime tied at 10, but the Jets held Pittsburgh scoreless the rest of the way to propel themselves to victory.

Meanwhile, Buffalo saw its AFC East title hopes disappear for good last week when the team lost 24-17 to the New England Patriots. Josh Allen threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns, with 108 of those yards going to wide receiver Cole Beasley. However, Allen and the Bills came up just short on their final drive of the game, getting stopped near the goal line in the final two minutes. While there is no such thing as a good loss in the NFL, Buffalo did prove itself capable of competing with the Patriots and the AFC-leading Baltimore Ravens in recent weeks, which is a positive sign heading into the postseason.

Jets QB Sam Darnold praised Bills fans, team’s defense

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold on Bills Mafia, Buffalo defense.

Sam Darnold already has an affection for Buffalo Bills fans.

As a quarterback, he already has respect for the Bills defense, too.

We’re not sure how the Bills will lineup against the Jets this week. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott said a “majority” of starters will see playing time in the season finale.

But the Bills are locked into the No. 5 seed in the AFC postseason. Buffalo could logically see no starters play, and no one would question it unless the team looked rusty in the playoffs.

Back to Darnold, he’s playing, his 6-9 team is out of the playoffs and only they only have one more game to go. Throughout this week, ahead of his final start of the season, Darnold has had high-praise for the Bills and their fans.

“It’s tough,” Sam Darnold said when asked about what it’s like to play in Orchard Park. “Buffalo fans are crazy in the best way. They get it rocking in there.”

If you thought your praise was high, Bills Mafia, Darnold thinks even more of the Bills defense.

“They’ve got a really good defense, top defense in the NFL,” Darnold said via conference call on Monday. “I just think we have to come out and continue to do our jobs and make sure we take advantage of some of the opportunities we get in the game.”

And don’t mince words, the Jets will certainly be giving their all out there against the Bills. Starters or backups. Jets head coach Adam Gase has had his team out of the playoff race for a few weeks, but complimented their drive and effort despite being eliminated this week.

“I love the fact that our guys kept battling, kept practicing hard, kept trying to find a way to improve and flip it around,” Gase said. “But I hate it for our fans and everybody. There were high hopes going into the season. We didn’t play very well at the beginning of the year. We had too many negative things happen. We didn’t find a way to win games. We just got going too late.”

Too bad for Sam that there still won’t be any cheering for him at New Era Field on Sunday, and you just love that Bills fans don’t know about any of that misery Jets faithful are feeling.
