Bellator 244 results: Julia Budd back to winning ways with decision over Jessy Miele

Julia Budd was mostly dominant over 15 minutes of work at Bellator 244.

[autotag]Julia Budd[/autotag] is back to her winning ways.

In her first fight since losing the women’s featherweight chamionship, Budd was mostly dominant as she earned a unanimous decision win over a game [autotag]Jessy Miele[/autotag] on Friday at Bellator 244. After 15 minutes, the judges scored it 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27 for Budd (14-3 MMA, 8-1 BMMA), who expressed how important it was for her to get back on track after losing the title to Cris Cyborg in January.

If there was a theme to Budd’s performance, it might’ve been best summed up by the old adage “it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” as she came out hesitant in the early going of the first two rounds.

Fighting southpaw, Miele (9-4 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) landed the first good strike of Round 1, a hard kick to the body, and it appeared to affect Budd’s approach. She was hesitant, with Miele choosing to close distance but also getting pegged each time. It wasn’t until the final minute that Budd secured a dominant position, taking the action from a standing clinch to the mat to close out the round.

Miele again came out string in the early going of Round 2, but Budd was able to stave off anything serious until she secured another takedown and finished with hard ground-and-pound.

By the third round, Budd clearly had her confidence and secured a third takedown about a minute in and remained in dominant top position until the final seconds. She worked hard for a finish, trying to secure an arm-triangle choke but couldn’t.

It didn’t matter, though, as she was dominant for much of the fight to earn the win.

Bellator is back in Connecticut this week, and one of its dual champions puts a title on the line at the top of the card.

Bellator 244 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Paramount following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, heavyweight and light heavyweight champion [autotag]Ryan Bader[/autotag] (27-5 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) puts his 205-pound title up against challenger [autotag]Vadim Nemkov[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 4-0 BMMA). Bader only is around a -150 favorite at the sports books, but all but one of our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts are picking him to stay champ-champ.

In the co-main event, former women’s featherweight champion [autotag]Julia Budd[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) for the first time since losing her belt to Cris Cyborg and takes on [autotag]Jessy Miele[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA). Budd is a 7-1 favorite and has a 13-1 lead in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Valentin Moldavsky[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) is the event’s biggest favorite at more than 9-1 against [autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] (23-18 MMA, 1-4 BMMA). But three of our 14 picker are taking Nelson to pull off a big upset.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Andrew Kapel[/autotag] (15-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) is an underdog to -250 favorite [autotag]John Salter[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) in their middleweight bout, but he’s got two of our 14 pickers taking him in an upset.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Bader (60 percent), Budd (91 percent), Moldavsky (75 percent) and Salter (82 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

The lineup for Bellator 244 got a big boost with the addition of a pair of fights to the main card and another handful for the prelims.

The lineup for Bellator 244 later this month got a big boost with the addition of a pair of fights to the main card and another handful for the prelims.

Of note, former women’s featherweight champion [autotag]Julia Budd[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) is set to take on [autotag]Jessy Miele[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) and [autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] (23-18 MMA, 1-4 BMMA) will meet [autotag]Valentin Moldavsky[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) at heavyweight.

She won four straight title fights and defended the belt three times before her loss to Cyborg, which was her first since she was submitted by Ronda Rousey in Strikeforce in 2011.

Miele made her promotional debut in October 2019 with a split decision over Talita Nogueira at Bellator 231. That was her fourth straight win and third straight after returning in January 2019 after a two-year layoff.

Nelson won his promotional debut against Javy Ayala at Bellator 183 in September 2017 after a lengthy run in the UFC. But since then, he has dropped four straight to Matt Mitrione, Sergei Kharitonov, Mirko Cro Cop and Frank Mir.

Moldavsky picked up his fourth straight win since signing with Bellator. He dropped the first fight of his career in Rizin in December 2016. But with Bellator, he has wins over Carl Seumanutafa, Ernest James, Linton Vassell and Ayala.
