Former Lions LB Jessie Lemonier passes away at 25

Some very sad news on former Lions OLB Jesse Lemonier

Per a report from ESPN’s Eric Woodyard, former Detroit Lions linebacker and pass rusher Jessie Lemonier has passed away. The cause of death has not been reported at this time.

Lemonier started his career in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Liberty university, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. He bounced back and forth between their active roster and practice squad throughout the season.

At the beginning of the 2021 season, Lemonier was waived by the Chargers and was quickly brought on to Detroit’s practice squad.

Lemonier earned a call-up to the active roster in October of that year and though he played a very small role on defense, he made quite the impact. In seven games that season with the Lions, he started twice at outside linebacker, recording 1.5 sacks as well as 15 total tackles.

The Lions initially re-signed him in April of 2022 but he was waived a month later.

He has since been with the Arizona Cardinals, as well as the Arlington Renegades of the XFL and the Houston Gamblers and Birmingham Stallions of the USFL.

Lions bring back Darren Fells and Dean Marlowe among roster maneuvers

The Lions used a roster manipulation to create space and quickly brought back Fells and Marlowe. Detroit also made several changes to the practice squad.

Lions fans whose blood pressure surged with the odd news of the team releasing two prominent veterans on Wednesday can relax. The Lions quickly re-signed tight end Darren Fells and safety Dean Marlowe in a series of roster maneuvers on Thursday.

Fells and Marlowe were never going anywhere. The Lions exploited the NFL’s rules that require a player to be on the active roster for a day before being placed on injured reserve. Detroit had two players destined for I.R. in Tim Boyle and Da’Shawn Hand, but they needed to wait a day. After claiming WR KhaDarel Hodge and PK Austin Seibert off waivers, GM Brad Holmes needed two quick, temporary roster spots, and waived the vested veterans Fells and Marlowe to create the space.

The Lions also made a few changes to the team’s 16-man practice squad. Holmes brought in five players who spent the preseason on other rosters:

  • QB Steven Montez
  • CB Parnell Motley
  • TE Jared Pinkney
  • TE Shane Zylstra

To make room for the newcomers, the Lions released four players from the initial practice squad. All were with the Lions throughout training camp:

  • LB Rashod Berry
  • DT Miles Brown
  • TE Alize Mack
  • RB Dedrick Mills

Chargers place EDGE Uchenna Nwosu on injured reserve

Another defensive end was placed on the injured reserve.

The Chargers made a few roster moves ahead of their Week 16 matchup against the Broncos.

Los Angeles placed edge defender Uchenna Nwosu on the injured reserve list. In correspondence, the team signed EDGE Jesse Lemonier to the active roster.

Lemonier has appeared in four games for the Bolts this year after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Liberty.

Nwosu and Joey Bosa were both ruled out for Sunday. Nwosu is dealing with a knee injury while Bosa was diagnosed with a concussion.

L.A. also activated EDGE Joe Gaziano and tight end Matt Sokol from the practice squad.

This will mark the first time that Gaziano and Sokol have appeared in a regular season game.

The activation of Sokol means that the chances of TE Hunter Henry playing are slim. Henry was placed on the COVID-19 list a couple of days ago.
