POLL: Should the Broncos retire Von Miller’s No. 58?

The Broncos did not retire Champ Bailey’s 24 or Terrell Davis’ 30. Should they retire Von Miller’s 58?

After agreeing to trade Von Miller to the Los Angeles Rams, the Denver Broncos have ended the No. 58 era — at least for now (Miller hasn’t ruled out the possibility of returning in the future).

Once Miller eventually hangs up his cleats and retires, should the Broncos retire his No. 58 jersey?

Recent history suggests Denver might not be quick to retire the number. Broncos defensive back Champ Bailey was one of the best cornerbacks in NFL history, but the team didn’t retire his No. 24 jersey.

Terrell Davis was one of the best postseason running backs in league history and he helped Denver win back-to-back Super Bowls, but the Broncos didn’t retire his number, either.

Bailey gave Adam Jones permission to wear No. 24 in 2018 (that never should have happened) and then P.J. Locke wore the number in 2019.

Davis gave Phillip Lindsay his blessing to wear No. 30 in 2018, and safety Caden Sterns now wears the number. Before that, No. 30 by worn by David Bruton (2009-2015), Cory Boyd (2008) and Mike Bell (2007).

If the team does not retire No. 58, Miller’s former number will eventually be passed on to other players, just like Bailey’s and Davis’ were.

We want to know what you think, Broncos fans. Should the team retire No. 58? Make your voice heard by voting in the poll below!

Josh Gordon will wear No. 19 jersey with Chiefs

A new chapter means a new jersey number for #Chiefs WR Josh Gordon.

The newest WR for the Kansas City Chiefs has been assigned a jersey number with his new team.

The Chiefs officially signed WR Josh Gordon to the practice squad today after he passed his physical. He’ll occupy one of the veteran spots on the practice squad until he has been brought up to speed.

As Gordon turns in a new chapter of his career, he’s set to wear a new jersey number. He wore the No. 12 jersey in college at Baylor and with the Cleveland Browns, but that number is currently occupied by Chiefs practice squad WR Gehrig Dieter. With the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, Gordon wore the No. 10 jersey. That number is, of course, occupied by Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill.

According to the team’s official roster on Chiefs.com and their roster on the Chiefs’ media portal, Gordon will be wearing No. 19 in Kansas City.

via NFLOMG.com

The last player to wear No. 19 on the 53-man roster in Kansas City was WR Marcus Kemp, who currently wears No. 85. The No. 19 was famously worn by former Chiefs QB Joe Montana during the mid-90s. It was also recently worn by former Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin.

It’s possible that this number is merely a placeholder, but they typically leave it blank if a player hasn’t been assigned a number. The fact that it’s on both the team website and the media roster suggests it’s here to say. We’ll get the official word when the team is back on the practice field tomorrow.

Tony Jones Jr. changes jersey number again, opening No. 21 for Bradley Roby

Tony Jones Jr. changes jersey number again, opening No. 21 for Bradley Roby:

Well that’s interesting. Tony Jones Jr. has worn No. 37 for most of his time with the New Orleans Saints, but he recently switched it up once the team processed various roster moves.

For a few days, Jones was listed in No. 21. That’s a solid number for a running back, but it’s been earmarked for someone else: cornerback Bradley Roby, who wore it with the Houston Texans. Jones changed jersey numbers again and is now in the slightly-heftier No. 34.

That’s not as bad as No. 37. It’s probably an upgrade, with a positive legacy in New Orleans (Tim Hightower fans, reveal yourselves). The last player to wear it was defensive back Justin Hardee, who was named a team captain by the New York Jets in his first year away from the Saints.

Still, Jones has seemed to play well no matter what number he’s assigned. Here’s hoping he continues to impress now that he’s taken Latavius Murray’s spot behind Alvin Kamara.

James Robinson promises to sign any jersey with his old number

Robinson announced that he will sign any obsolete No. 30 jersey.

With Jacksonville Jaguars running back James Robinson changing his jersey number from No. 30 to the No. 25 he wore in college, anyone who purchased one of his jerseys last season has seen it rendered obsolete. But if this applies to you, worry not. Robinson has you covered.

In a cool gesture that you don’t usually see from NFL players, he has offered to sign any of his No. 30 jerseys to make up for the change. He announced on Twitter that affected fans just need to reach out to the Jaguars PR Twitter account with a picture of them wearing the jersey.

Robinson’s college jersey was occupied last season by safety Jarrod Wilson, but Wilson was released last week during final roster cuts, freeing up the jersey number Robinson wore while becoming one of the most prolific running backs in Illinois State history.

The former undrafted player burst onto the scene as a rookie, finishing tied for fifth in the league with rushing yards at 1,070. He will be Jacksonville’s top back again this season, and he will likely see an even bigger role than originally thought, given the injury to running back Travis Etienne.

Jags RB James Robinson to change his jersey number

Robinson will be switching to No. 25, which he wore in college while at Illinois State.

With the release of safety Jarrod Wilson, the door was opened for James Robinson to return to the jersey number that he’s worn for most of his career. The second-year running back, who wore No. 30 as he rushed for over 1,000 yards as an undrafted rookie in 2020, will be returning to his roots, wearing the No. 25 jersey moving forward that he wore in college at Illinois State.

Wearing No. 25 as a senior for the Redbirds, Robinson totaled 1,899 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns and finished as the second all-time leading rusher in ISU history.

Robinson came out of nowhere as a rookie phenom for the Jags, finishing tied for fifth in the league in rushing with 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns. After the addition of first-round pick Travis Etienne, it was expected that Robinson’s carry percentage would diminish in 2021.

But after Etienne’s season-ending foot injury, the Jaguars only have two other running backs, Carlos Hyde and Dare Ogunbowale, currently on the roster. Hyde is a veteran and Ogunbowale registered two starts for the Jags last season, but neither presents game-changing abilities like Etienne does.

As a result, Robinson will likely once again be the primary rusher for the Jacksonville offense, especially as offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell tries to get rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence acclimated to the scheme and speed of the NFL game.

Robinson jumped on the opportunity to get his old number back, and the Jaguars will hope he looks like he did at Illinois State while wearing it.

Mac Jones’ big night: new jersey number, NFL preseason debut

Mac Jones has a HUGE day ahead of him.

Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones has come a long way since he joined the Crimson Tide football program back in 2017. The long-time backup ended up being a national champion, a record holder and a Heisman finalist. Now, he’s getting ready to perform at the next level.

ESPN New England Patriots reporter Mike Reiss tweeted out today that Jones, the team’s first-round draft pick, would be playing in tonight’s preseason matchup against the Washington Football Team.

Jones will share time with former NFL MVP and presumed Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton. However, there is speculation that Newton’s job could come into question sooner than most think if the rookie, Jones, continues to succeed on the practice field.

Reiss also noted something of importance to fans of Jones, they should expect to see him in a jersey number other than the No. 50 he’s been rocking during training camp and preseason practices.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Mac Jones as he makes his NFL preseason debut tonight against the Washington Football Team.

Saints waive DE Kendall Donnerson to make room for LB Kwon Alexander

The New Orleans Saints brought back Kwon Alexander by waiving recently-signed DE Kendall Donnerson, while another player changed jersey numbers for him:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://saintswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Kwon Alexander made his return to New Orleans Saints training camp on Thursday, but the team is easing the linebacker back to action while he continues to recover from Achilles surgery. And now we know how he’s going to fit on the roster, plus which jersey number he’ll be wearing.

The Times-Picayune | Advocate’s Luke Johnson first reported that the Saints released Kendall Donnerson, which was confirmed by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. The veteran defensive end was signed on the eve of training camp but struggled to stand out in a position group crowded with recent first-round draft picks like Marcus Davenport and Payton Turner.

Additionally, undrafted rookie linebacker Shaq Smith changed jersey numbers to accommodate Alexander. Smith is now wearing No. 46, having initially chosen Alexander’s preferred No. 58. Smith could be a candidate to make the practice squad if he performs well on special teams in the upcoming preseason games, but Alexander is looking to start next to Demario Davis.

Of course, other highly-drafted players like Pete Werner and Zack Baun may have something to say about that — not to mention Alexander’s ongoing road to recovery. We’ll keep an eye on his progress as camp continues.

This Florida scholarship QB to wear No. 15 for first time since Tim Tebow

With receiver Jacob Copeland moving to No. 1, the door was opened for the quarterback to take over the number worn by Tim Tebow.

For the first time since Tim Tebow roamed about the Florida locker room, a scholarship quarterback will be wearing his hallowed No. 15 jersey. Redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Richardson, a Gainesville native and graduate of Eastside High School, will switch to Tebow’s former number in 2021 after wearing No. 2, the jersey he’s worn throughout his entire career, in 2020.

A number of defensive and skill-position players, as well as non-scholarship quarterbacks, have worn No. 15 since Tebow’s departure following the 2009 season, but no scholarship passer has chosen to invite the comparison — that is, until now.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

“I’ve worn No. 2 since little league, through middle school, high school, 2 has always been my number,” Richardson told AllGators on Wednesday. “But the fans encouraged it and I was thinking, ‘why not do it?’ It’s great for marketing and getting the fans involved.

“It’s an honor to even be able to wear this number at the position since Tebow had it. I know, with this number comes great responsibilities and I have to live up to that standard, so why not try to achieve that?”

The number was previously occupied by receiver Jacob Copeland, but on Wednesday it was also announced that Copeland would be taking over the No. 1 jersey that Kadarius Toney wore in 2020.

Since coach Dan Mullen was hired in 2018, the No. 1 jersey has been awarded to one of the top players on offense and defense. With Copeland receiving the offensive honor for the 2021 season, it opened the door for Richardson to make a change as well.

Richardson saw action in four games as a true freshman, going 1 for 2 through the air for 27 yards and a touchdown to go with 61 yards on seven carries on the ground. He enters 2021 as the likely backup to fourth-year quarterback Emory Jones, but with four remaining years of eligibility, he should be a major part of UF’s plans for the future.

Lakers news: LeBron James could become first player in NBA history with four retired jerseys

Switching from No. 23 to No. 6 could put LeBron James in the history books for another accomplishment.

After making his switch from No. 23 to No. 6 official, LeBron James can potentially enter the history books for another accomplishment.

The switch means James will have worn four jerseys throughout his NBA career, and all four have a strong chance at being retired by the teams he has played for.

James started with No. 23 during his first stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and though he didn’t guide the team to a championship before leaving, he lifted the ceiling of a roster that lacked dominant talent at an incredibly young age.

Then he donned No. 6 upon signing with the Miami Heat in free agency, where he added to his developing collection of accolades. He won his first two championships in 2012 and 2013, simultaneously taking home the Most Valuable Player award in both seasons.

The two trophies became the second and third titles in Miami franchise history.

James returned to Cleveland and reinstated his No. 23 jersey. He, along with Kyrie Irving’s ascension, led the team to its first championship in 2016 after an incredible 3-1 comeback in the NBA Finals.

When James began a new chapter with the Los Angeles Lakers, he stayed with No. 23 and brought the city its first championship since 2010 during the Orlando bubble in 2020.

Since No. 6 will be his next number, there’s a possibility the Lakers could retire it if James can help deliver the franchise’s 18th championship, which would be the most in the league if the Boston Celtics don’t win another one first.

But Eddie Jones, who the Lakers drafted 10th overall in the 1994 NBA draft, also wore No. 6 and played a crucial role in the team’s success before leaving in the 1998-99 season.

If James has all four jerseys retired, he’d be the first player in NBA history to achieve that:

Wilt Chamberlain’s retired jerseys are with the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Lakers. He wore No. 13 with all three teams.

Pete Maravich had his No. 7 jersey retired with the Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans. The Atlanta Hawks retired his No. 44 jersey.

Lakers news: LeBron James officially switches jersey from No. 23 to No. 6

LeBron James makes the switch official: He’ll wear No. 6 for the Los Angeles Lakers next season.

The move is now official: LeBron James will wear No. 6 on his jersey next season for the Los Angeles Lakers instead of No. 23.

A report came out last week about James’ plans to make the switch. James has worn No. 23 while with the Cleveland Cavaliers during his two stints with the franchise, and he kept the number when he signed the Lakers in 2018.

The 18-year veteran wore No. 6 when he played for the Miami Heat from 2010 to 2014. He won two titles in Miami in 2012 and 2013, simultaneously winning the Most Valuable Player award in each of those campaigns.

James is also wearing No. 6 for the Tune Squad in his upcoming movie “Space Jam: A New Legacy“, which will also debut the new Nike LeBron 19 shoe.

James reacted to the change on his Twitter:

The switch also made for a fun comparison between how James performed while wearing No. 6 with the Heat for four seasons and No. 23 with the Cavaliers and Lakers for 14 seasons.
