Commanders QB Jayden Daniels is officially No. 5

Tress Way gives Jayden Daniels the No. 5.

The Washington Commanders open rookie minicamp on Friday. Washington’s rookie class began showing up in Ashburn this week, but there was one piece of unfinished business before the Commanders took the field Friday.

What number would quarterback Jayden Daniels wear? Daniels has always worn No. 5, but that jersey was taken by Washington’s most-tenured player, punter Tress Way.

Not anymore. On Washington’s official X page, Way posted a 15-second video with a No. 5 jersey in the background. However, the jersey’s back did not bear Way’s name. Daniels’ name adorned the back of the jersey, and before the end of the video, the camera shifted to the rookie passer in the background.

According to Zach Selby of commanders.com, Way isn’t giving the number away for free. No, he isn’t taking money from Daniels. Instead, Way may have the rookie quarterback get him some tickets for the first LSU/Oklahoma game now that Way’s Sooners are in the SEC.

To be clear, Way is not giving the jersey away for free. He doesn’t want money, but he did come up with “a couple cool ideas” for what he and Daniels could do for the swap. His alma mater, Oklahoma, is going to be in the SEC, so he suggested that perhaps he could get tickets to the first LSU-Oklahoma game. He also brought up the possibility of having fans submit pictures of them wearing Way’s old number to the team so Daniels could buy them a jersey with Way’s new number on it and a personal letter from Way himself.

Ezekiel Elliott to wear No. 15 after all, 2 Cowboys teammates changing numbers to accommodate

From @ToddBrock24f7: Zeke will switch to his Ohio State jersey number for 2024. Trey Lance and rookie Ryan Flournoy will get new numbers in the ensuing shuffle.

Actually, it looks like those Ezekiel Elliott No. 21 jerseys just became throwbacks. And a whole new batch of his updated merch will no doubt be hitting stores soon.

The veteran running back will not return to his former jersey number in his second stint with the Cowboys, as was previously reported. Instead, he’ll now wear No. 15, same as he wore last season in New England and in college at Ohio State.

The switcheroo was confirmed Wednesday by Patrik Walker of the team website.

With the signing of his contract earlier in the week, Elliott had started his conditioning work wearing the number that fans remember from his first seven years in the league. Now that he’s moving to 15, though, it will cause a bit of ripple effect in the locker room, with two of his new teammates being affected.

Backup quarterback Trey Lance had been wearing No. 15 ever since he was acquired by Dallas last season in a trade. He’ll give that up to Elliott and take No. 19 instead.

Only problem? The team had already announced that new draft pick Ryan Flournoy would be the latest in a long line of Cowboys wide receivers to don the 19 jersey. It is not yet known what number Flournoy will shift to.

Many Cowboys fans have already taken the next leap of logic to assume that free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore will be brought back to take back up the No. 21 he adopted for the 2023 season, but that is only speculation and wishful thinking, at least for now.

Because as has been demonstrated by the whole saga of Elliott’s return to Dallas- and now his number shuffle- things can change in a hurry in the NFL.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy’s childhood mentor explains significance of his jersey number

#Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy’s childhood mentor explains the significance of his jersey number.

The Kansas City Chiefs added more speed to their receivers room following the NFL Draft with the selection of Texas Longhorns standout Xavier Worthy. The 40-yard dash scouting combine record holder will be expected to make an impact in his rookie season, and he honed his skills early as a youth with a dedicated mentor.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. sat down with Worthy’s high school coach Chris Maxey, to discuss the importance of the Texas standout’s jersey number, his influence on the future, and how his humble personality will fit in with the Kansas City community.

“Well, he always liked it,” Maxey said of Worthy’s inclination to wear the No. 1 jersey. “At first, he couldn’t get it, so I always told him that if he were that number one when you walk on the field, they’re gonna look at you no matter if you did bad, short or tall; they [are] all going to wonder why you got that number one, some unique number. He always held the standard, you want to be number one when you wear it, you got to fill the shoes, and he takes on the challenge. He continued to wear it and continued to show out.”

Maxey continues to work with youth athletes at Central East High School in Fresno, California. He uses Worthy’s journey as a positive example of what can happen if you work hard and pursue your goals.

“I’d say trust the process and be humble,” Maxey explained. “There’s gonna be good days and bad days. You know, [that is] part of the sport. I’m sorry to say there are injury times; there are things you heard and you can’t do. Even then, you have to trust the process. He went through a time where he got a little injury hiccups. He trusts the process; history repeats itself.

“I tell everybody to stop trying to rewrite the weird, rewrite the story, take the good with the bad, and learn from the good. Also, learn from the bad. Be humble, and always trust the process. Be patient, don’t try to cut corners, you try to cut corners, it’s going to bite you. Overall, just trust the process and be consistent. Don’t think you’re bigger than anybody.”

Worthy’s selection as the Chiefs’ first-round pick is a great honor, but Maxey feels his personality will shine in the Kansas City community.

“[He is a] great kid, humble, he’s gonna put in work, he’s gonna bring a lot to the organization,” Maxey said. “He gifted me [a] 98-inch TCL TV, someone who is just part of his story. He’s a very loving, caring person. He’s a very humble, hardworking kid, someone that I think the Chiefs organization will love for a long time; he’s going to bring a lot to the team.

“He’s going to bring a lot of hard work, so whatever the coach is asking him, the staff, the organization, he’s going to be there and put both feet forward; he’s not going to be one foot in, one foot out, throughout the community… In the locker room, [he] is going to be someone that’s going to be all in. He’s a very high-character kid. So he won’t be someone who will distract the organization. [He] is going to be a hard worker and be a Chief, and it’s all about the Chiefs.”

Worthy will have plenty of eyes on him alongside veteran Marquise “Hollywood” Brown as a new speedy option who can help Patrick Mahomes do damage down the field.

Marcus Mariota will make history with the Commanders in 2024

Mariota will make history in 2024.

New Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota will make history in 2024. After signing over 20 outside free agents, the Commanders announced jersey numbers for their new players this week.

The veteran quarterback will wear No. 0 next season, making Mariota the first quarterback in NFL history to wear that number.

The NFL relaxed its rules regarding jersey numbers in 2021 and brought back No. 0 in 2023. There were 22 players who wore the number throughout the league last season, but no quarterbacks. That changes with Mariota, who has always worn No. 8 in his NFL career, excluding one season in Atlanta, but that number belongs to running back Brian Robinson Jr. in Washington.

Mariota signed with Washington last month after spending the 2023 season in Philadelphia as Jalen Hurts’ backup. In 2022, He played for the Falcons, starting 13 games. Prior to his time in Atlanta, Mariota played two years for the Raiders after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Titans, who drafted him No. 2 overall back in 2015.

Mariota will enter his 10th NFL season in 2024. He has played in 90 career games, making 74 starts and completing 62.7% of his passes for over 15,000 yards, with 93 touchdown passes and 55 interceptions. Mariota has also rushed for 2,064 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney to wear uniform No. 1

Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney to wear number 1 jersey this season

The Atlanta Falcons have a new No. 1 on the roster. Free-agent wide receiver Darnell Mooney, who signed a three-year deal with the team at the start of the new league year, will wear the number this season in Atlanta.

Former Falcons cornerback Jeff Okudah wore No. 1 last year, but after signing a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, the number became available again.

Mooney, 26, will step in as the team’s No. 2 receiver in 2024, bringing some much-needed speed to the position. The former Bears wideout has 213 career catches for 2,593 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.

LOOK: New Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu is switching to a single-digit number

No. 4 looks good on Luvu.

In his three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, new Washington linebacker Frankie Luvu wore the No. 49 jersey. Upon signing with the Commanders, that number was off-limits, as it is retired as the number of the legendary Bobby Mitchell.

So, would Luvu return to the No. 50 he wore with the New York Jets when he first entered the NFL?

We have our answer. Per Washington’s X page, Luvu will wear No. 4 in 2024. The No. 4 jersey was worn by wide receiver Curtis Samuel in 2023, but Samuel departed in free agency. From 2020-22, quarterback Taylor Heinicke donned the No. 4.

While it may take some getting used to, the No. 4 looks pretty slick on Luvu.

Before 2021, Luvu would’ve had to wear a more traditional linebacker number. However, the NFL relaxed those rules, allowing more flexibility for jersey numbers.

Washington’s signing of Luvu has been praised around the NFL, as many believe his football is still ahead of him.

Chris Olave may be going back to his college jersey number

With the loss of Jameis Winston to the Cleveland Browns, Chris Olave has floated the thought of changing back to his jersey number:

The offseason is in full swing, and with that, the New Orleans Saints are reportedly going to be losing Jameis Winston to the Cleveland Browns. It’s an opportunity for wide receiver Chriis Olave to return to his old college jersey number.

In his first two seasons at Ohio State, Olave wore No. 17 as his teammate J.K. Dobbins was using  No. 2; however, Olave would snap it up in his junior and senior years. Then he had to move on to No. 12 in the NFL with Jameis Winston having already claimed it. However, with Winston reportedly gone, that frees up Olave to return to his preferred number.

Olave responded to Alontae Taylor, who wears No. 1, on Twitter when Taylor asked if he wanted to rep the “1 & 2 combo” and his brother Josh Olave would also send out a post about the potential number change:

If this number change were to go into effect, Olave would be the first wide receiver to wear it for the Saints. There have only been six others to wear No. 2 for New Orleans, all of whom were kickers or quarterbacks:

  • K Chip Lohmiller: 1995
  • QB Aaron Brooks: 2000-2005
  • K Olindo Mare: 2007
  • K John Kasay: 2011
  • K Zach Hocker: 2015
  • QB Jameis Winston: 2020-2023

All incoming Alabama football freshman and transfer players numbers announced

Alabama football unveils new numbers for incoming players

The 2024 college football season is going to simply be pandemonium. From the 12-team playoffs to conference realignment to the rapidly changing NIL landscape, the sport is the Wild West right now.

For Alabama fans, that’s not even the main concern yet as we are still adapting to life post-[autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag]. It must be said that new head coach [autotag]Kalen DeBoer[/autotag] has done an outstanding job since taking over less than two months ago, but still the shock of not seeing Saban on the sideline for the first time since the 2006 season will take some getting used to.

When you lose a legend of the game, there is naturally going to be some turnover and a bit of a drop-off, but DeBoer has certainly minimized that. This new Alabama coaching staff is shaping up to be one of the better ones in recent years, the roster stayed pretty well intact and DeBoer absolutely lit it up on the recruiting trail. Now, we are getting to see some of his work come to fruition as Alabama football announced the jersey numbers of the incoming players.

Of note, Washington QB transfer [autotag]Austin Mack[/autotag] will wear No. 10, [autotag]Domani Jackson[/autotag] No. 1, [autotag]Jaylen Mbakwe[/autotag] No. 9 and [autotag]Dre Kirkpatrick Jr.[/autotag] No. 21. It is also expected that incoming phenom wide receiver [autotag]Ryan Williams[/autotag] will be wearing No. 2 for the Crimson Tide.

Vikings’ 53-man roster by jersey number ahead of Week 2

The 53-man roster saw minor changes since Sunday

The Minnesota Vikings are set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

Week one didn’t happen the way they wanted it to with the Vikings losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-17.

Once the first roster cuts were made, multiple rookies and veterans decided to change up their jersey number to a better number for their position. There have been a couple of minor changes, but the roster has stayed mostly the same.

Here is an updated 53-man roster complete with jersey numbers.

Broncos RB Jaleel McLaughlin explains why he didn’t change his jersey number

Broncos RB Jaleel McLaughlin wore 10 in high school then 20 and 8 in college. That adds up to wearing No. 38 in the NFL.

It is game week for the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos will face off against the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday, and expectations are raised under new coach Sean Payton, with the playoffs now a clear objective.

Ahead of Sunday’s season opener, eight Denver players have elected to change their jersey numbers for 2023.

Broncos rookie receiver Marvin Mims has changed his preseason number of No. 83 to No. 19, and cornerback Tremon Smith will now wear No. 1 after previously wearing No. 23.

While six other Broncos players have elected to change their numbers, one player chose not to: running back Jaleel McLaughlin.

McLaughlin went undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft after finishing his career at Youngtown State. McLaughlin ended his career as college football’s all-time leading rusher.

But his reason for sticking with No. 38 is a unique one.

McLaughlin’s reason makes a lot of sense. His story is unique and it was probably a lot of hard work for him to get to this spot in his life. We’re excited to see No. 38 in action this fall.
