Jets were among teams placing waiver claim on Jerry Tillery

The Jets tried claiming the former first-round pick.

The Los Angeles Chargers cut former first-round pick Jerry Tillery. With the trade deadline having passed, all players are now subject to the waiver system.

With Sheldon Rankins out for a few weeks, the Jets are keeping an eye on the defensive tackle market for any potential short-term help. With Tillery available, the Jets made an effort to bring him in.

However, with the Jets being as good as they are this season, their waiver priority spot is low. The waiver order is basically the current draft order without trades, so the Jets had about two-thirds of the league ahead of them in the waiver order.

Tillery was claimed by the Las Vegas Raiders, who currently sit at No. 2 in the waiver and draft order. The Lions, Panthers, Colts, 49ers, Giants and Chiefs also put in a claim for Tillery.

The Jets didn’t land Tillery, but the claim shows they are always looking to improve their roster and understand a little extra help at defensive tackle wouldn’t hurt.

Sunday against the Patriots will be the Jets’ first game since Rankins went down with his injury. They still have Soloman Thomas and Nathan Shepherd behind Quinnen Williams and could move guys like John Franklin-Myers and Micheal Clemons inside as well if they need to.

Report: Chargers signing DT Tyeler Davison

Reinforcements are coming on the Chargers’ defensive line.

Reinforcements are coming on the Chargers’ defensive line.

After losing Austin Johnson, Otito Ogbonnia, and Christian Covington to season-ending injuries over the past two weeks, as well as waiving Jerry Tillery, Los Angeles had just three healthy defensive linemen on the roster.

Brandon Staley said Monday that they would look to make a couple of moves in addition to elevating practice squad lineman Joe Gaziano to the active roster.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the first of those moves, with the Bolts signing seven-year Tyeler Davison to their active roster.

Davison was previously on Cleveland’s practice squad after spending four years with the Saints and three with the Falcons.

Davison is more of a Covington-type player as an inconsistent run fitter with a bit of pass-rush upside, but at this point, the Chargers have to take what they can get.

An NFL-caliber player with 216 career tackles that the team knows is in shape because he’s been on a practice squad for a month is better than a rookie UDFA off the street, after all.

Davison has not appeared in a game this season for the Browns but had 30 tackles with 3 for loss in 12 games for the Falcons last season.

Chiefs were among eight teams to attempt to claim DT Jerry Tillery on waivers

The #Chiefs were one of the teams that attempted to claim former #Chargers and new #Raiders DT Jerry Tillery on waivers.

The Kansas City Chiefs attempted to claim a player released by an AFC West rival.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs were among eight teams to place a waiver claim on former Los Angeles Chargers DT Jerry Tillery. The former first-round draft pick out of Notre Dame was claimed by the Las Vegas Raiders, who have very high waiver priority given their poor record this season. The other six teams to place a claim besides Kansas City and Las Vegas were the Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets and the New York Giants.

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that Kansas City at least placed a waiver claim. There is literally no downside in attempting to claim a player, even if it’s highly unlikely they fall to you. It’s been Brett Veach’s modus operandi to try and reclaim former first-round draft picks during his tenure with the Chiefs. He didn’t work out in Los Angeles for whatever reason, but that doesn’t mean he won’t work elsewhere.

Tillery, in particular, had a solid showing against Kansas City in his career with Los Angeles. He recorded 12 total tackles, two tackles for loss and eight quarterback hits across seven career games played. That fact likely made him an appealing option for the Raiders as well.

Giants made waiver claim for DT Jerry Tillery

The New York Giants were one of 8 teams to put in a waiver claim for DT Jerry Tillery, who was ultimately assigned to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The New York Giants were one of eight teams to put a waiver in on former Los Angeles Chargers defensive lineman Jerry Tillery on Monday.

Tillery was ultimately awarded to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Tillery was there 28th payer selected int he 2019 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. He recorded 106 tackles and 10.5 sacks in 54 games with the Chargers, who declined his fifth-year option this past spring.

The Giants currently have four interior defensive lineman on their active roster: Leonard Williams, Justin Ellis, Dexter Lawrence and Henry Mondeaux, who was signed from the practice squad on Monday.

The team’s lack of depth at the position stems from losing Nick Williams for the season due to a biceps injury suffered on October 30 in a game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Lions put in an unsuccessful waiver claim on DT Jerry Tillery

Tillery was claimed by the Raiders after being dumped by the Chargers

The Lions were looking to add another young player to the defensive line, but recent success made Detroit too good to land him.

Detroit was one of eight teams to place a waiver wire claim on former Chargers defensive tackle Jerry Tillery, who was waived over the weekend. Tillery is a 2019 first-round pick form Notre Dame who never panned out for the Chargers.

Tillery is now a member of the Las Vegas Raiders. The 2-7 Raiders had the worst record amongst the eight teams making a claim. Detroit is now 3-6 after winning two games in a row. The NFL’s waiver wire is based on the inverse order of records, meaning the team with the worst record gets priority.

Lions fans probably shouldn’t sweat missing out on Tillery, who has been the worst defensive tackle in the NFL over the last four years per Pro Football Focus grading,

Browns did not put in waiver claim for DT Jerry Tillery

The Browns were not among the eight teams that put in waiver claims on defensive tackle Jerry Tillery.

The Los Angeles Chargers waived former first round pick Jerry Tillery last week, and given general manager Andrew Berry’s track record there was reason to believe the Cleveland Browns would be heavily interested in his services. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, however, the Browns were not among the eight teams that put in a request for Tillery.

It would not have mattered anyway as the Las Vegas Raiders, second in priority, were granted the services of Tillery. The other teams who put in waiver claims on Tillery were the Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, New York Giants, and Kansas City Chiefs.

49ers were among teams to place waiver claim on DL Jerry Tillery

The #49ers were 1 of 8 teams to make a waiver claim on former Chargers 1st-round pick, DL Jerry Tillery.

The 49ers tried unsuccessfully to add some reinforcements on their defensive line. They were one of eight teams to place a waiver claim on recently-released former Chargers defensive lineman Jerry Tillery according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Tillery was awarded to the Raiders.

Los Angeles waived their former first-round pick ahead of their Week 10 matchup against the 49ers. It was a little surprising they let him go considering their lack of depth up front.

It makes sense the 49ers would be in on a former first-round pick on the defensive line considering their injury troubles their. Both of their starting interior DL, Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw, are out with no firm timetable for returning. The club is hopeful to have them for Week 11 or shortly after, but their pursuit of Tillery is at least a small sign that uncertainty still reigns in the defensive line room.

He was the 28th pick in the 2019 draft and struggled to make an impact. In 54 games he posted just 10.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss.

Tillery fits the physical profile of a player the 49ers could use inside and on the edge. San Francisco has also made a habit of trying to resurrect careers of defensive linemen who hadn’t panned out in the NFL yet.

Otito Ogbonnia questionable to return vs. 49ers with knee injury

The Chargers’ defensive line is getting thinner.

The Chargers’ defensive line is getting thinner.

Rookie Otito Ogbonnia was injured on Los Angeles’ first defensive drive and has been ruled questionable to return. Ogbonnia appeared to suffer a non-contact injury to his knee while fighting to stop Christian McCaffrey on the goal line. He was eventually carted back to the locker room after being unable to place much weight on the injured leg.

Ogbonnia was starting Sunday in place of Austin Johnson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last week against the Falcons. L.A. also waived Jerry Tillery on Friday after rumors of locker room tension between the former first-round pick and coaching staff surfaced.

With Ogbonnia injured, the Chargers have Sebastian Joseph-Day, Morgan Fox, Christian Covington, and Breiden Fehoko available on the defensive line for the remainder of this game.

Should Bengals target Jerry Tillery after his release from Chargers?

There’s a very interesting name available for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals have had some surprising defensive line performances from the likes of Jay Tufele and Zach Carter amid injury concerns.

But that probably shouldn’t stop the team from having an interest in Jerry Tillery.

Tillery, a first-round pick in 2019, was just waived by the Los Angeles Chargers. He has struggled to meet expectations that come with the high draft slot, to say the least. But that probably shouldn’t stop a Bengals team that has a defensive staff that consistently squeaks the most out of almost anyone, from Eli Apple to B.J. Hill and beyond.

As Adam Schefter notes, the move wouldn’t happen until after the bye week and other teams had interest:

On one hand, the Bengals seem solid at the area right now. On the other, they’ve had miserable injury luck so far and this is the sort of low-cost move they like.

Given the coaching staff’s ability to get the most out of players, Tillery could be a nice pass-rushing addition to the middle of the defense.

Chargers waive DT Jerry Tillery

Tom Telesco’s 2019 first-round pick is no longer a Charger.

Tom Telesco’s 2019 first-round pick is no longer a Charger.

The team announced Thursday that it had waived defensive lineman Jerry Tillery. The move comes after Tillery did not practice this week due to a personal matter, per the injury report. The former Notre Dame standout was also nursing a back injury suffered during a bye-week lifting session.

It’s the end of a disappointing tenure for Tillery, who never found his footing as a full-time starter after being selected with the No. 28 pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

Many fans criticized him for his shortcomings as a run defender when asked to play all three downs. Still, this season especially, Tillery was one of the few defensive linemen able to generate pressure on quarterbacks from the interior.

The move leaves L.A. with Sebastian Joseph-Day, Morgan Fox, Otito Ogbonnia, Christian Covington, and Breiden Fehoko as its healthy defensive linemen. Austin Johnson was placed on injured reserve earlier this week with the knee injury he suffered against the Falcons.
