Raheem Mostert out, Tyler Huntley third QB vs. Seahawks

Newly acquired Tyler Huntley will only be available to play Sunday if both Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle get injured.

The Miami Dolphins will be without running back Raheem Mostert in a Week 3 game against the Seattle Seahawks, the team officially announced Sunday ahead of kickoff.

It’s no surprise as Mostert, along with sixth-round rookie wide receiver Malik Washington, were both listed as doubtful to play. Those two are joined on the list of inactives by the recently acquired Tyler Huntley, who is listed as the emergency third quarterback and can only play Sunday if both Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle get injured.

The other four players — Ethan Bonner, Channing Tindall, Mohamed Kamara, and Andrew Meyer — have been healthy scratches in each of the first three weeks of the year.

For the Seahawks, the most notable name on the list of inactives is running back Kenneth Walker III.

Walker, along with former Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker, was listed as doubtful to play against Miami. Not on the list of inactives for Seattle is pass rusher Boye Mafe, who was questionable for the game.

Sunday will be former Seahawks LB Jordyn Brooks’ return to Seattle

Sunday will be former Seahawks LB Jordyn Brooks’ return to Seattle

Sunday is going to be a bit of a homecoming for a former Seattle Seahawk. In Week 3, the Seahawks will be hosting the Miami Dolphins for the first time since the 2016 season. Coming to Seattle with the Dolphins will be a familiar face in linebacker Jordyn Brooks.

Brooks, originally a first round pick by the Seahawks in the 2020 NFL draft, is playing on a new team for the first time in his career. After spending four seasons in the Emerald City, Brooks took his talents to South Beach in free agency when he signed a four-year deal worth over $26 million.

Although he may not have been the kind of game-changing talent fans may have wanted from a first round pick, Brooks was a fine player who performed well during his time in Seattle. Overall, Brooks recorded 513 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, recovered three fumbles and snagged an interception. His 109 solo tackles in 2021 led the league and set a Seahawks franchise record.

So far in 2024, Brooks has 10 total tackles in two games.

Interestingly, the Seahawks and Dolphins did a bit of a switcheroo at linebacker. Brooks signed with Miami, and former Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker made his way to Seattle in free agency. Unfortunately, Baker is currently listed as DOUBTFUL for the game on Sunday, so we will likely not see both men in action against their former teams.

Seahawks injury update: LB Jerome Baker listed as QUESTIONABLE to return

Seahawks injury update: LB Jerome Baker listed as QUESTIONABLE to return

More unfortunate injury news for the Seattle Seahawks. During halftime of their Week 2 game against the New England Patriots, we received word that linebacker Jerome Baker is QUESIONABLE to return with a hamstring injury.

Baker has been dealing with a hamstring issue throughout training camp and the preseason.

Baker has played well in the first half against the Patriots. He has recorded four total tackles, as well as a pass defense in the end zone against New England running back Rhamondre Stevenson.

Additionally, linebacker Derick Hall is being evaluated for a concussion.

We at Seahawks Wire will continue to update as news breaks.

Seahawks Week 2 injury report: TE Noah Fant a full participant

The Seattle Seahawks are getting ready to play the New England Patriots in Week 2. Unfortunately, their injury report is considerably longer than it was in Week 1, and there was not much change from Wednesday to Thursday when it came to player participation or not.

The one improvement is the fact tight end Noah Fant went from being limited in Wednesday to being a full participant in practice on Thursday. Unless a major setback were to happen, it’s clear Fant is on track to play in New England this weekend.

The full injury report can be seen below.

Did Not Participate in Practice:

  • RB Kenneth Walker III – Oblique
  • T George Fant – Knee
  • LB Uchenna Nwosu – Knee
  • TE Pharaoh Brown – Foot

Limited Participation:

  • LB Tyrel Dodson – Shoulder
  • WR Tyler Lockett – Thigh
  • LB Jerome Baker – Hamstring
  • LB Dre’Mont Jones – Hamstring
  • CB Riq Woolen – Hamstring
  • CB Tre Brown – Quadricep

Full Participation:

Seahawks LB Jerome Baker returns to practice ahead of Week 1

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Jerome Baker returned to practice on Monday. Baker was seen participating during warmups, which is the only portion of practice beat reports are allowed to watch nowadays. The Seahawks won’t release their first injury report until Wednesday, but it’s an encouraging sign for his availability for Sunday’s Week 1 matchup versus the Denver Broncos.

https://twitter.com/BradyHenderson/status/1830738223276208132

Baker did not play a single snap throughout the preseason and has been a limited participant due to two separate injuries suffered during the summer. The former Ohio State standout was first sidelined during spring workouts after undergoing offseason surgery for a wrist injury. Upon his return from that setback, Baker dealt with a hamstring issue that forced the Seahawks to take a cautious approach during the exhibition.

The Seahawks signed Baker to a one-year contract worth up to $7 million earlier this offseason following his release from the Miami Dolphins. Baker is part of a new-look linebacker core as a projected starter opposite fellow free-agent addition Tyrel Dodson. Together, they’ll try and replace the production lost from Bobby Wagner.

Off-ball linebacker is an important position in this Seahawks defense. Head coach Mike Macdonald coached Roquan Smith and Patrick Queen with the Baltimore Ravens last season, two tone-setting defenders that spearheaded Macdonald’s league-leading defense.

It’s unfortunate that Baker wasn’t healthy throughout training camp and the preseason. He missed crucial reps that were key to acclimating to Macdonald’s defense. Ultimately, Seattle took the smart approach to preserve the health of a starting defender. Their caution appears primed to be rewarded with Baker playing against the Broncos this weekend.

Jerome Baker is back at Seahawks practice

Jerome Baker is back at Seahawks practice

It is good news all around for the Seattle Seahawks’ linebacker room. Earlier on Thursday, the Seahawks made a trade with the Carolina Panthers to acquire seventh round rookie linebacker Michael Barrett. Head coach Mike Macdonald certainly has knowledge of what Barrett can bring to the table, as he was his defensive coordinator at Michigan during the 2021 season.

Now, more good news, as veteran linebaker Jerome Baker is back at practice! Baker had missed close to two weeks dealing with a hamstring injury. While his goal was always to be ready by Week 1, his extended absense was starting to get concerning.

Fortunately, he is healthy enough to be back in the fold at practice.

The Seahawks linebacking corps is one that will feature the most new faces in the first year of the Mike Macdonald era. Jerome Baker and Michael Barrett are joined by Tyrel Dodson, Tyrice Knight and Blake Lynch.

Seattle is inching closer and closer to their Week 1 showdown against the Denver Broncos, who have already named rookie quarterback Bo Nix their starter. While the Broncos should be better this year, they are still a ways away from being a legitimate contender in the NFL. The Seahawks should be able to take care of business. However, they will need to be healthy in order to do so.

Having Baker back in the fold is a good sign this defense is trending in the right direction, health wise.

Is Jerome Baker injury becoming concerning for Seahawks?

Is Jerome Baker injury becoming concerning for Seahawks?

As expected, projected Seattle Seahawks starting off-ball linebacker Jerome Baker did not play in Saturday’s Week 2 preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans. Baker was also a non-participant during joint practice sessions with the Titans earlier in the week. His absence with a hamstring injury has now officially crossed the two-week mark, and perhaps it’s time to start concerning yourself with his early-season involvement.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald recently commented on Baker’s injury, declining to provide an exact timeline for his return to the practice field.

“I can’t give you a date on when he’s coming back, but he should be going here pretty soon,” Macdonald said. “The plan is to have him ready for week 1, yeah, for sure.”

The Seahawks are being cautious with Baker’s hamstring after signing him to a one-year contract worth up to $7 million earlier this offseason following his release from the Miami Dolphins. Baker, who missed four games last season via injury, is being counted on to play off-ball linebacker in Macdonald’s scheme. It’s an important position, given what Macdonald accomplished with Roquan Smith and Patrick Queen as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens last season.

Rookie linebacker Tyrice Knight continues to receive first-team reps in Baker’s absence. The Seahawks were actually down multiple linebackers heading into Saturday’s exhibition contest against the Titans, with Tyrel Dodson also sitting out. Knight played 49 snaps, 66% of Seattle’s defensive plays, as a result.

The Seahawks are approximately two-and-a-half weeks away from their regular-season opener with the Denver Broncos. Macdonald and his defensive coaching staff aim to get Baker practicing well before then. Now’s the time to begin monitoring when Baker returns to practice.

5 Seahawks missing second joint practice with Titans

The Seattle Seahawks are on the practice field in Nashville on Thursday morning for their second and final joint practice with the Tennessee Titans. The competitive session is a useful dress rehearsal for Saturday’s preseason game versus the Titans, which will feature fewer starting-caliber players given the physicality of joint practices. Both teams find these shared practice sessions to be more practical for preparation purposes than exhibition games are.

Unfortunately, a handful of keynote Seahawks talents aren’t practicing versus the Titans on Thursday. Some of the absentees feature players who exited Wednesday’s practice, and others are injured players who didn’t feature in either practice. The following five Seahawks aren’t practicing on Thursday.

Jerome Baker & Jon Rhattigan, LB

The Seahawks are without off-ball linebackers Jerome Baker and Jon Rhattigan for a second straight practice. Baker is still being sidelined by a hamstring issue that has afforded rookie defender Tyrice Knight more reps with the first-team defense. The Seahawks were so light at the position heading to Nashville that they re-added undrafted linebacker Easton Gibbs to the 90-man roster after waiving him earlier this summer.

Zach Charbonnet, RB

Zach Charbonnet is missing his second consecutive practice, which means he won’t be afforded an opportunity to practice against the Titans at all. Kenneth Walker III continues to be the workhorse back, and George Holani and Kenny McIntosh are continuing their RB3 position battle. Charbonnet is missing crucial reps here.

Dre’Mont Jones, DE

Defensive end Dre’Mont Jones recently returned to practice after missing approximately two weeks with a hamstring injury. The veteran lineman exited Wednesday’s practice after feeling a flare-up. Head coach Mike Macdonald indicated it wasn’t a serious setback, but the Seahawks are wisely being cautious with their $51 million pass rusher. Jones is not practicing on Thursday.

Noah Fant, TE

Starting tight end Noah Fant did not finish Wednesday’s practice. Head coach Mike Macdonald declined opportunities to specify why he exited practice early. Macdonald and his staff must be playing things safe because Fant isn’t present for Thursday’s session with the Titans. Pharaoh Brown and Brady Russell should see increased reps in his absence.

Seahawks rookie LB Tyrice Knight took advantage of preseason Week 1 opportunity

Seahawks rookie LB Tyrice Knight took advantage of preseason Week 1 opportunity

Seattle Seahawks rookie linebacker Tyrice Knight took advantage of his sizable opportunity in Saturday’s 16-3 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. Starting off-ball linebacker Jerome Baker missed the game with a hamstring injury. The other projected starter, Tyrel Dodson, was limited to six snaps. That catapulted Knight into a much larger role.

Knight played 30 snaps, which accounted for 57% of Seattle’s defensive plays on Saturday. The only linebacker that out-snapped him was fourth-year undrafted free agent Jon Rhattigan, who totaled 35 snaps. Knight was arguably Seattle’s best defender.

The No. 119 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, Knight was flying around sideline to sideline. The former UTEP standout was credited with making three solo tackles. Knight was Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded Seahawks defender, and their second-highest overall graded player. He earned an elite overall grade of 89.9 with a coverage score of 84.7 and a run defense score of 73.8.

Knight was targeted just in coverage and allowed a four yard reception. For a fifth-round rookie that was considered inexperienced in the 2024 draft, Knight did a fantastic job evading blockers in space and reaching ball carriers in the hole. His athleticism allows him to navigate tight spaces and make plays.

The expectation is that Baker will return to practice soon. There’s concern with his hamstring injury, which the Seahawks are approaching with caution because they tend to linger if not treated correctly. Baker was limited to 13 regular-season appearances last season, so there’s a bit of a recent history with injuries. If his issues persist, Knight appeared capable of filling in as necessary.

That depth is invaluable, especially coming from a Day Three rookie.

Seahawk HC Mike Macdonald has high praise for Tyrel Dodson and Jerome Baker

Monday marked the first full day of pads for the Seattle Seahawks at their training camp. After taking the weekend off, the Seahawks were back in action. Reportedly, the first day with pads was a decisive victory for the defense, who had the edge on offense today.

Head coach Mike Macdonald took to the podium and highlighted a pair of defenders. Two of the newest faces to Seattle this year are linebackers Tyrel Dodson and Jerome Baker. Coming over from the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, respectively, these two are filling in some very large shoes at the linebacker position.

The good news for the Seahawks is they seem to be off to a fantastic start. Macdonald is pleased with their poise, communication, and how smooth they are playing. Macdonald’s full comments can be seen in the Tweet below.

The Seahawks are going to need solid production from Dodson and Baker. They are replacing Bobby Wagner and Jordyn Brooks, who provided Seattle with 294 total tackles last year.

Both are currently under one-year contracts.
